Kolkata, May 24 Boosted by her party’s resounding success in the recently concluded panchayat polls in the state, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee will visit Singur on Sunday.

She will demand immediate return of lands to the farmers who have not yet received their compensation cheques.

“We want industry in Bengal but not through forcible grabbing of agricultural land which is being done by Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. In Singur, there are many farmers who have refused to receive compensation cheques. The state government should return their land,” Banerjee said at a press conference here on Saturday.

“The factory can still be set up after returning 400 acres of land to the farmers,” she added.

Banerjee said that her visit to Singur would mark the second anniversary of the beginning of the anti-land acquisition agitation there.

The Trinamool chief, along with other leaders will be holding a rally at Bajemelia village.

Alleging that CPM cadres were resorting to post-poll violence in the areas won by the Trinamool, Banerjee said: “Our supporters in Nandigram, Singur and other places are being assaulted. Many of them cannot return home. The police and district administration are backing the cadres. We want peace. I will highlight the problems to the Governor.”

In a letter written to Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, senior Trinamool Congress leader Sougata Roy has alleged that files of various Panchayat Samities and Zilla Parishads where the Trinamool has recently won are being deliberately misplaced to cover up corruption.
