She was responding to Managing Director of Tata Motors Ravi Kant’s statement that the company would continue its operations in Singur as long as its patience lasted. She said there was no scope for negotiations with the company.
“The only solution is to return the 400 acres of land that was forcibly acquired from the farmers. The factory can come up in the remaining 600 acres,” she said.
“The Tatas seek to construct complexes and malls in the 400 acres. Why should the people suffer for their commercial expansion?” asked Banerjee.
The Trinamool will not let Tatas do their business in Singur because the people’s mandate in the recent panchayat elections had supported the protest, said Banerjee.
“At least 1,000 families have been affected after the forcible land acquisition in Singur. They have filed affidavits in the Calcutta High Court opposing the acquisition,” said the Trinamool leader.
She also accused the Tatas of toeing the CPM line. “It looks as if the Singur project is a joint venture between the Tatas and the CPM. Instead of protecting the people, the state’s police have been guarding the factory for the last three years,” Mamata said.
