Kolkata, February 12 A 55-year-old man who worked as a labour with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, died in police custody late last night.

He was one of the seven arrested yesterday afternoon by Metiabruz police for allegedly creating nuisance after consuming liquor. Later in the evening he died while being taken to hospital.

The death caused resentment among the CITU affiliated Kolkata Municipal Corporation Workers’ Union (KMCWU).

A spokesman for the union said the municipal workers met the inspector and asked for a magisterial inquiry into the matter and punishment for the guilty police officials. They suspected police atrocity behind the tragic death.

Rabi Das, 55, a resident of Tantipara under Garden Reach police station was arrested along with six others including Md Jalani, 74 and Pradip Prasad, 30, from Dinu Bagan Lane at Garden Reach.

The inspector in-charge of the police station said: “Das started shivering and we immediately made arrangements to take him to the Garden Reach hospital. But the doctors declared him dead on arrival.” The Superintendent of Police, South 24 Parganas, Praveen Kumar said: “Inquiry has been ordered.”
