New Delhi The Delhi High Court has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to pay Rs 10 lakh as compensation to a woman whose husband was killed by a stray bull four years ago.

Justice S Ravindra Bhat held the victim died as a consequence of the civic agency’s failure to remove stray cattle from the city roads.

“The accident was the consequence of neglect on the part of the MCD, which did not ensure proper supervision of the area for the removal of stray cattle... Considering these facts, the MCD is liable to pay compensation,” Bhat said.

The court passed the order on a petition filed by the deceased’s wife,

Shakuntala. Her husband Sita Ram, a fruit vendor, was seriously injured when a stray bull hit him and he later succumbed to injuries in January 2005.

Shakuntala approached the municipal body for compensation which turned down her plea. She then approached the High Court.
