The incident took pace at around 5.45 pm at his export firm, Dragon Star Leathers, on the Monoharpukur Road under the Tollygunge police station area.
Preliminary investigation points out that Bidyutbihari Chatterjee (57) had an outstanding income tax of Rs 2 crore, which he came to know about from a recent notice. This depressed him very much, police said.
In the suicide note, which has been recovered from the site, Chatterjee held himself responsible for his death because there was no other way out. He also accepted the fact that through his actions he is landing himself and others around him in trouble.
“The man used his licensed revolver. We have recovered the body and sent it for a post-mortem,” said Vineet Goyel, Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Chatterjee, a resident of Charuchandra Palace in Tollygunge, came to his office around 3.30 pm and went to his cabin.
He told his staff not to disturb him. Around 5.45 pm, the staff heard a gunshot from his room. His body was found lying in a pool of blood.
He had a bullet wound on his head. His revolver lay beside him, police said. Chatterjee is survived by his wife and a daughter.
