Jalandhar, March 19 An auto driver set himself afire in full public view at busy Nakodar Chowk last night. People tried to help him, but he started running, engulfed in flames.

Then, a policeman on duty at Nakodar Chowk took him inside the police tent and put a blanket on him.

Kamaljit Singh of Bhargo Camp has been admitted to the Civil Hospital with 60 per cent burns.

Police sources said he was upset over the behaviour of his brother and mother, as they had “falsely implicated him in a fight”, which took place between his brother and some other persons.

Although they reached a compromise at the behest of the police, Kamaljit kept on receiving threats. Meanwhile, the police have booked Kamaljit under Section 309 of the IPC for attempt to suicide.

Eyewitnesses said he also spoke against the Punjab government before setting himself ablaze.
