Kolkata, March 15 A thirty-five year old hawker committed suicide after strangulating his two daughters, one of them four-months old, in his home in Srikanan Pally in Maheshtolla, South 24 Parganas, on Saturday.

According to police, Sunil Kumar Sau was depressed owing to a financial crunch and had frequent altercations with his wife over the issue.

Sau returned home around 8 am on Saturday in an inebriated state, police said. He locked his daughters in a room and strangulated them with a rope.

His wife Nirmala (30) was at a nearby pond washing clothes when the incident took place. When she returned home, she found the door locked from inside and shouted for help.

The neighbours broke open a window and saw Sau’s body hanging from the ceiling. The police later recovered the bodies.

“The man had probably beaten up the girls before killing them, as there were injury marks on their bodies,” a police officer said.

“We have come to know that Sau and Nirmala and had a heated argument on Friday night and the next morning as well,” said a senior police officer.

Praveen Kumar, Superintendent of Police, South 24 Parganas, said: “The bodies have been sent for postmortem. We have found that Sau had incurred huge debts.”

Neighbours said that Sau had borrowed large amount of money from several people and was being harassed by them on a regular basis. A local said, “He used to beat up his two children regularly. His wife also had to face mental and physical torture. They quarrelled everyday.”
