Patiala, March 25 For ace shooter Manavjit Singh Sandhu the upcoming championship at Patiala is an ideal platform to leave a mark in the national circuit and prove his mettle, yet again, before the all important World Cup shooting championship in China, which is right next on his agenda.

Talking to The Indian Express, a day prior to the start of the sixth edition of the Sardar Sajjan Singh Sethi Memorial Shooting Championship to be held under the aegis of National Rifle Association of India and Punjab Rifle and Shooting Association, Manavjit stated that he has been going from a rough patch following his change of weapons and his weight loss regime in the past some months.

Aiming to regain his glory in the world championship and the Olympics, the shooter says that he did some adjustments with his weapon and also tried to get physically fit that involved a lot of hard work on the field. "After all the experience I have gained I can say that I am better prepared for the Beijing Olympics as I was for the Athens Olympics when I was a new kid on the block," he said.

"I am really keen to bag a medal for the country at the Olympics and given the exposure that I have got in the past one year and my rigorous sessions in Italy where I have been training in the past have helped me improve as a shooter," he said, after completing his practice session at the New Moti Bagh Gun Club, the venue of the event.

Not happy with his recent performances, the shooter stated that his choice of weapons made the difference and he has now got new firearms from Italy. "My balance with the earlier weapons was not up to the mark and I had to make some adjustments which did not work out. However I am confident of putting up a good show in the upcoming event," he added.

Eyeing his future course of action, Sandhu said he would participate in all the four upcoming world cups before the Olympics and would also be participating in some tournaments competing with more international talent, to get in shape. "More tournaments mean better preparation and I am willing to do just that," he added.

Prominent among those who would take part in the championship include Lt. Col Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore who won India's first individual silver medal in the 2004 Summer Olympics. Another ace shooter from the country who has proved his mettle in the domestic and international circuit, Mansher Singh, a national champion in 2002, a silver medallist in the Asian Games in 2002 held at Busan and gold medallist in the Common Wealth Games held at UK in 2001, will also be participating in the event.
