New Delhi, June 29: Defence Minister A K Antony and three services chiefs will sign a condolence book on Monday in memory of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw after controversy erupted over their absence at his State funeral in Udhagamandalam on Friday.

Defence Ministry sources told PTI that apart from Antony, the services chiefs Admiral Sureesh Mehta, Air Chief Marshal F H Major and General Deepak Kapoor would be the first to put down their tributes in writing in the book that will be kept at the Martyrs' Memorial near India Gate.

The condolence book would be open for the general public to record their messages for the celebrated Field Marshal from 9.30 hours to 16.30 hours from June 30 to July 2, Ministry sources said.

Manekshaw, the architect of India's victory over Pakistan and the creation of Bangladesh in the 1971 war between the two countries, breathed his last at the Military Hospital in Wellington in the Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu in the early hours of Friday.

In a rare gesture, the government had announced a State funeral to Manekshaw.

Criticism mounted over the low representation from the Government and the tri-services at the funeral, and the delay from the services chiefs to condole the death of the Field Marshal.

The Monday's event is seen as a face-saving exercise from the Defence Minister and the Services chiefs in view of the open criticism of their absence at the funeral.

Shame on them ! by Sachin on 04 Jul 2008

This nation does not respects the soldiers. There is nothing like "jai jawan and jai kisan " left in this country. For the soldiers to come up and remind the nation of how much the nation is obliged to them is no less than a mother coming up to a son and reminding him of what he owes to her !You can't pay such a debt. For a mother or a soldier to come up and ask for what they deserve is shameful ! Its very sad.

MANEKSHAW FUNERAL by N S Kapur on 30 Jun 2008

field Marshal Manekshaw desrves heartfelt condolences. I remember when he visited the casualty ward of the jawans wounded during war with Pakistan, he had asked a jawan 'kitni goli laga'(How many bullets received) and the jawan replied Sahib three writhing in pain and the Field Marshal responded 'mujeh nau goli laga tha'(I received nine bullets). 'Takda ho ja; phir morcha per jana hai' (Get ready to go again to the front). It was so inspiring a visit to the Hospital shown on TV of the late Field Marshal because it was somewhat different from the normal greeting by saying 'shabash'by our Generals.God bless the soul of our departed beloved Field Marshal.

WHAT WE, THE PEOPLE COULD DO TO HONOUR OUR HEROES? by SUBHASH SAMPAT on 02 Jul 2008

Forget the jerks and windbags in politics. What can the ordinary members of the public do to honour their fallen men and women in uniform? What can we do to honour the icons like Sam Bahadur Maneckshaw? We can honour them by placing thousands of Indian tricolours or fresh flowers in or outside our places of worship or outside the Army offices in our villages, towns and cities or by holding religious ceremonies at our club, community or association. Each flag and batch of flowers could represent a soldier who has died serving this country. One thing that I have observed of the British that we could well emulate is the placing of flowers either at the spot where the person has died or at the places of worship. I remember when Princess Diana died in a road accident some years ago, British people expressed their sorrow and love for her and paid tribute to her by placing tens of thousands of batches of fresh flowers outside the places of worship in their villages, towns and cities. When someone dies in any untoward incident or accident in Britain, people there express their sympathy and pay tribute to the dead by placing fresh flowers at the accident spot where the person has died. We could do the same.

Bul-sht-Antony's face saving exercise by anand on 30 Jun 2008

i am really pained by the way this guys are taking our military for granted, but i think that sam must be laughing at this UPA guys, remember what he said to Indira when she asked him "General, are you ready" and our SAM replied "sweetie, i am always ready", i think this why Sonia who is a catholic Christian must have told her cronies and yes boys not to attend SAM's funeral because he insulted my mom-in-law, haha, i think SAM must have know about how he would he would be treated and so extracted everything beforehand, jai jawan jai kisan

Shameful act by Ajay, Pune on 30 Jun 2008

Yet another disgusting act from government but then AK like any other selfish politian. What is shocking is the behaviour of the Service chiefs...However, the millions proud Indians would always honour the great Field Marshal.

Field Marshal funeral by narotam on 30 Jun 2008

Its a shoddy late attempt to honour the brave man who was loved by the nation and the soldiers he led!The problem with the nation every one has to be kicked into feeling small or into any respectable action which would be dine automatically in any other country

answering "curious" by BABUBHAI PATEL USA on 30 Jun 2008

SIR,USA ,I USE BECAUSE WE ARE FAR AWAY FROM MOTHER LAND...AND STILL OUR HEART ACHES FOR INDIA...AND MAY BE WE SEE THINGS DIFFERENTLT AND MAY BE CLEARLY FROM HERE THAN OVER THERE,WHERE THERE IS SO MUCH PROPAGANDA....ALTHOUGH IT DOES NOT HURT US,WE STILL FEEL IT...JUST LIKE " SAM MANEKSHAW" DID NOT LOOK THAT MUCH OF HERO FORM THAT CLOSE IN INDIA....OR NEHRU/SONIA CONGI BOFORS MAY NOT LOOK AS CROOKED AS WE SEE FROM HERE...FROM A DISTANCE YOU SEE THE BIG WAVES,,,AND NOTPETYY TALKS...BY THE WAY,CURIOUS,GET READY FOR 13 % INFLATION BY AUGUST !!!!! AS WE SEE FROM HERE...CHINDBURUM WILL ALSO SAY "IT IS NOT MY FAULT" !!!!!AND THE MIGHTY PM WILL SHOW YOU THE SCHEME"THAT HE HAS COLLABORATED WITH USA TO GROW WHEAT ONTHE MOON,AND THEN,UPON HARVEST IT WILL DIRECTLY THROWN ON VIDARBHA AND HLEPLESS FARMERS AND AAM AADMI.ALL THEY WILL HAVE TO DO IS,JUST STAND OUTSIDE HOLDING A BUSHEL AND CATCH THE FLOW OF "MOON WHEAT",COMPLIMENTS OF CONGI..SORRY,SAM,BUT BOFORS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED.YOU INCHARG

sam by C2 on 30 Jun 2008

this is adding insult 2 injury; all patriots in delhi shd come to india gate and prevent that joker antony and the service chiefs from signing the condolence book. they shd be trashed, their faces blackened, loaded on a donkey and parded on Janpath, not on Rajpath. This shd be telecast live on all channels - these desh drohis shd be shown their place. Antony shd be sent to jail or a mental asylum, along with his Italian queen. Prathiba has shown that she is first the servant of the Italian family and then only the commander in cheif of the army. Next republic day the army shd not salute her; the people shd boycott the parade next year and show their protest at the Government's handling of Sam in his death.

Stop this lip service .. by Baatul on 30 Jun 2008

We must stop this kind of lip service. It doesn't matter whether Antony attends the funeral. It matters whether Antony can get the servicemen's pay similar to our babus. Alternatively, get the babus on the warfront and give our jawans some break in the cool confines of some office to collect some bribes.

Political Parties must apologize by Jignesh Shah on 30 Jun 2008

All political parties , especially the BJP , must answer as in why none of their representatives where present during the last rites of the greatest SOLDIER the country has ever produced? It does behove to a party of the stature like the BJP to behave in such a insensitive manner.I wont blame the Congress, coz they can think and the whole party and her allies ( especially ) the Left leaders are traitors. However, I did like to CONGRATULATE, the Tamil Nadu government for declaring state mourning in honor of Field Marshall Maneckshaw. Kudos to you TN government.I am pissed and am angry at the Main stream political parties in insulting the greatest soldier of our times.

Manekshaw funeral by Jona Solomon on 30 Jun 2008

While the late Field Marshal brought great honours to his country, the Defence Minister and the three service chiefs brought disgrace by not attending the Indian icon's funeral. Shame on them all. I'm sure when these guys die, as they will some day, not even stray dogs will bother to attend their funerals.

HONOUR TO THE DECEASED by Ravi Rana on 30 Jun 2008

When you honour the dead, you do more for yourself than for the person who is gone. You give an honour to the dead so that once you are gone, you should be given a similar honour. By not respecting Field Marshall Manekshaw, these self serving politicians and the chiefs of the army, navy and airforce, have shown how they should be treated once they are gone. Field Marshall Manekshaw is in our hearts and he shall be inspiring a whole generation who have seen him, listened to him or worked with him. By not giving him his due, these people have let themselves down - not Sam Bahadur. He does not need their certificates. I salute you sir - you would always remain - "A great Indian".

SAM BAHADUR by atul kochhar on 30 Jun 2008

COULD SOMEBODY TELL ME AS TO HOW MANY OF OUR MUCH HYPED FILM STARS OR CRICKET STARS ATTENDED THE FUNERAL.THIS WOULD BE INTERESTING.

No importance by Wow on 30 Jun 2008

These third rate jockers, known as film stars, have no importance. What they would have done , girate their bottoms at the funeral ?

SAM BAHADUR by Ravi Rana on 30 Jun 2008

Probably none. They can only dance and sing and earn their money. They have no love for a soldier who brought such fame to the country.

In Memory of Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji "Sam Bahadur" Jamshedji Manekshaw by Balbir Singh Sooch, Advocate, Ludhiana on 30 Jun 2008

Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji "Sam Bahadur" Jamshedji Manekshaw MC (April 3, 1914 – June 27, 2008) was of Parsi origin (Zorastrian who came to India). In a long career spanning nearly four decades, Manekshaw rose to be the 8th chief of staff of the Indian Army in 1969 and under his command, Indian forces concluded a campaign by getting involved and siding with the Bengali's later to be called the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Bangladesh, a region seperated by more than 1000 kms from Pakistan, later gained independence after this battle. Are the politicians aware as to how awards etc conferred and with motive that’s is why they do not feel honoured to pay condolence even to the highest awaradee of the country as happened. The signing of in the condolence book by Defence Minister A K Antony and three services chiefs is really a face saving exercise on their part on Monday, June 30, 2008 after the controversy erupted over their absence at his State funeral in Udhagamandalam on Friday.

What A Shame by ABC on 30 Jun 2008

What happen to Commander in Chief(Chamca of Italian Queen) Maaadddaaamm Prathiba, is she a President of India, If so how come she is not presented at the Funeral, but she Can Visit if SoniaJi is Sick, she can make a special trip to her House. Just get lost and SHAME on you Madam President Shame, Shame, Now no Soldier should help you Gui's.

Manekshaw by Ajay on 30 Jun 2008

It is not the Field Marshall who has been snubbed, but the President, rime Minister, Defence Minister and three services chiefs who have disgraced themselves.Their absence from the state funeral shows the quality of men now leading India. I feel sad as well as frightened to see such people at the helm of the country. In no civilised country a national hero would be treated like that.Disgrace on you, India and the Indians.

Apathy, you have a new name! by Anupam Gupta on 30 Jun 2008

Time and again, Congress has shown that they give two hoots for "India". As one of them already accepted "Indira is India". Imagine any minister not attending even birthday of Priyanka's kids. Sadder aspect is that they have lost that insight that its not quite right and saddest of all, all this talk is not going to make any difference to any of them as they are now apathetic to all of that. To top all of that, another sad chapter is added by demonstration of other chiefs in joining the politicians. It shows that this "Congress infection" has infected our honourable chiefs. I had lot of respect for Mr Anthony but he has also disappointed in this saga.

Expected from the congress by Jitu on 30 Jun 2008

did anyone really expect the congress party and its menbers to honour any real soldier of the nation, a true patriot? They only people the congressmen honour, nay worship, is the nehru-gandhi family, regardless of the fact that they are responsible for most of the ills of the nation. Jawaharlal nehru can be held directly responsible for screwing the economy by imposing his half baked socialist economic policies and damaging the long term security interests of the country by appeasing muslims. The interesting thing to see now would be how many people still vote for the congress, after all this.

Self serving Congies by Kiran on 30 Jun 2008

These congies led by Man Mohan Singh to sarpanchs ritually attend birth and death anniversary of everybody(Jawahar, Indira,Rajiv) year after year. They never miss it. What a self serving parasites! Do these guys celebrate the birth/death anniversary of their own parents? So much dishonesty!

Is Indian safe in the hands of a central government headed by congress and its notorious allies?

It should come from the heart by Pradeep on 30 Jun 2008

No point in forcing responsible people to be there if they dont have a feel for it. I dont think this icon needs that. When the legendary singer MS Subbalakshmi died, president Mr Abdul Kalam, cancelled all appointments and rushed to attend the funeral. Because it came from his heart to be there and value her contribution. So lets not expect much from these intellectually and emotionally inferior breed of office bearers. At least we can console ourselves that India always produces some gems like Manekshaw or Kalam or N Murthy or other visionaries who will inspire the future generations. And it wont be depending on spine-less / hopeless poiliticians like Antony or Prakash Karat or Thakerays...

Congress Culture Honours No On by Parameshwar on 29 Jun 2008

The Congress,a party of darbaris, has allegiance to the Family, and only the Family, not the country. A sterling soldier, a shining icon to generations, even at the age of 94, and they could only depute a mere minister of state for his funeral. It's really strange that the Defence Minister,AK Antony could not find time for India's best-loved soldier. Funny, when you can see these darbaris commandeer helicopters

Respect good armymen or else.. by vijay on 29 Jun 2008

With such treatment awarded to real heros of the country, how could the government expect youngsters form good families to join the forces as officers?
