But the Congress hailed the signing of legislation into law by Bush, asserting that the Indian nuclear programme would be intact and future generations will not face power shortage.
"Bush is silent in his speech about the contentious issue of nuclear testing and the government has clearly failed in ensuring the sovereignty and nuclear independence for the country," BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said after the US leader signed the bill into law.
"The last minute face saving comments" by the US President, Rudy said, are nearly "personal assurances and have no legal standing or any statutory back up".
"Only history would prove that its a defeat for the country earned by the UPA at the cost of the common man," Rudy said.
The Left parties warned the deal would entail "huge costs" for India and was a result of "mutual desperation" on both sides.
The statement by Bush after signing the deal was "nothing but a device" to allay genuine fears over the deal, CPI(M) General secretary Prakash Karat said.
Maintaining that there was a "wide gap" between the Indian and the US governments' understanding of the deal, CPI leader D Raja said while Washington considered 123 agreement to be governed by the Hyde Act, the Atomic Energy Act and other American laws, New Delhi was of the view that only 123 agreement was binding.
Congress spokesman Manish Tiwari said the 123 agreement has not been changed which was a "victory" for India.
"Indian nuclear programme continues to be intact. It is a victory for India.
"It opens nuclear trade with the rest of the world. The future generations will not have to face any electricity shortage," he said.
"Today we celebrate the festival of Vijayadashami, today good won over evil. It's a big day for India as the American President has finally signed the Indo-US nuclear deal."
Warning that the nuclear accord will have "serious" consequences for India, Raja said its signing can be seen as a result of "mutual desperation".
"While Manmohan Singh (PM) wants to show some achievement at the fag end of his tenure, the Americans are desperate to help the military-industrial establishment at a time when US is passing through a mega financial crisis," the CPI leader said.
Maintaining that American nuclear companies were waiting for the massive Indian market to open up for their revival, he said "they see the Congress-led UPA government helping them in this.
"Nobody knows what the economic cost of this deal will be for India. It will simply be huge...it will have very serious consequences for India and its future," Raja said.
He also said that it is finally the prerogative of the US to ensure uninterrupted fuel supplies for India. "We will have to see how far the Indian government has yielded to the US," he added.
External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will formally sign the overall bilateral nuclear cooperation accord early Saturday morning.

True. Common man is being sucked. Prayer for punishment to that individual and coterie.
Will the BJP explain to the country that how is this deal bad for the country. This deal was initiated by the BJP when it was in power, and brought to a successful conclusion by the present government. Instead of making vague allegations, the BJP should make public the draft agreement made during the time it was in power, and then explain to us point by point the difference with the final document. The BJP should act like a responsible opposition, and not oppose for the sake of opposing alone. For it's narrow political ends, it has even disowned the then National Security Adviser. As for the right to tests, no country has done tests or a long time, as with today's technology these are not required to be done actually, but can be simulated in the laboratory. The party so vocal about the deal, has nothing to say about the mayhem created by Bajrang Dal in the states ruled by it or NDA constituents.
Since when did the BJP care about the common man. When they were in power they had "Chintan Baithaks" in 7-star resorts, ordered private planes for all ministers, got all the luxuries that only rich people and rich nations can afford. So, now the BJP thinks of common man? Or is it "sour grapes"?
Dear BJP, grapes are sour-come on grow up. National interest should take precedence over personal ego of a party. It is the same deal that you wanted to sign but could not but would have liked to. As for the Communists they never belonged to this country. Their loyalties lie elsewhere. They can be forgiven and forgotten but you the BJP cannot.
with 70000 tonnes of uranium in NE as alleged by gurumurthy why we need 123.We should have more uranium mines. Enron cheated india of 6000 crores. Will someone give us truth?Mega projects give mega scam as stocks market. We have seen lies, speculation from upa not honesty. Will we have truth?
When you have a disease, you should not treat only the symptoms but go deep inside to cure the whole person with all his dimensions both psychological and physical. The same should apply here. What is deep inside is this fundamental fact: Sonia Maino of some distant land has no care for India and its people. she planted her man in every strategic area to corner India's wealth...while Chidambaram open the economical gate to foreign invasion in media, his counterpart in other ministries are doing the same to further open our market to colonial domination. When you know PATIL was planted as President and other criminals as Ministers, you know that everything here is about a peculiar democracy which is for the foreigners, by the foreigners and of the foreigners...No wonder than if you have a foreigner as the leader of an Indian party and is actually the real PM of India, what else can you expect than Indian national strategic assets (media) being bought by enemies of India?
If US attacks Indian atomic powerstations after 10 years when they dont like India millions of Indians will die. Surviving Indians will blame the present Govt for blunder.Forget nuclear energy. What is the anser of Govt. of India and supporters of this deal. No country prospered with US help.Look how Iraq Pakisthan Vietnam are destroyed and PMs and Presidents lost position and glory. The intelligent and scientists should not blidly support the deal just because they are followers of Congress party. Think of future of Indians.
Most people are too susceptible to the socalled achivement of political leaders which ultimately cut sorry figure in the long run.The deal is made a law and is signed but the exact contents of this deal aren't known to none and kept dubious.Certainly India needs such deals especially in this sector because of extreme lack of enrgy but how can media and most commentators can be sure about what President Bush assures verbaly and there are no written committments about India's freedom to test and evelop nuclear weapons as and when needed by the Nation. As the matter of fact Prez Bush had practically refused but failing economy and devasting deficits of USA compelled to compromise. Moreover,as always, the USA needs an obedient and weak Govt like of Congress/UPA.On the other hand the PM Singh and his Party will get a boost and give some reason to fight in the coming elections.Mr.Singh and his Govt was/is an utter failure.More surprising is how people can simply forget the most crucial problam
well done priminiter those who are against the deal is so backward thinking and for the political gain thanks daran
Do we need Nuclear bombs to safeguard our country as BJP claims??. A nuclear bomb was used twice and what distruction it caused. India tested nuclear bombs twice and we had to suffer in all scientific fields be it space or atomic energy. Did it deter China or Pakistan NO in fact Pakistan got its own Nuclear bombs with help from China. We got nothing from nuclear bombs except international isolation. The world respects India because of its culture, intellegent people and economic progress not because it has tested nuclear bombs.
Nuclear tests by India will deter China. We shouldn't forget our humiliation by China in 1962 was due to our weakness. Pakistan used every covert means to assemble a nuclear device and surely China actively assisted them. It is a wrong notion that our tests compelled Pakistan to go nuclear. They were trying to offset our numerical superiority for a long time. Our nuclear capability is one of the reasons the world started to respect us.
Civil Nuclear Energy and technology is a need of today and tomorrow for India, its good that today we are out of the nuclear isolation, as of future nobody knows what's going to happen, so while the sun shines make hay. Morover its not just USA, India can now deal with any country so what's there to be afraid of. As far as cost is concerned, buying new technology is going to be costly, wherever you buy from.
Once NSG signed the agreement, we got an OK from France, now the US and possibly Russia. What we gain is getting Uranium supply for power generation - power that many of our states desperately lack for development. Even if 10-15% of our energy supply comes from nuclear - that would be a welcome addition. Suburbs near major cities like Mumbai, Delhi face hours of power cuts stopping industry. Even if Nuclear energy is higher cost and can provide to these companies who are willing to pay for (any) power to keep the lights on in the industry it would be of great help
India-US 123 Agreement is truly a landmark win=win deal for both the countries; it should help India in its efforts to tackle energy needs of future generation. Whether we make business dealins with US or not IS STILL our choice; but the important aspect is our freedom to deal with other nuclear states, like France, Russia, UK, etc. Opposition stand of BJB is totally idiotic; communists are local agents for China interests, sooner we pack and send them to China, better for India's long term progress. These Red bedfellows are retrograde and a curse to any Indian advacement and their aim is to keep India poor and impoverished for ever. The only saving grace is that they are not as corrupt as other politicos, but that does not make them progressive in serving this country.
India won. China and Pakistan, and their agents in India lost. Poor, old Advani: change your astrologer! Advani is a senile, old man.
The congress need not smart themselfs under the nuclear deal being signed and approved by a debilitated US congress passing thru one of the worst financial crisis of the century. It would be apt to say that Mr.Manmohan Singh has bailed out Mr.Bush with this multi billion deal benefitting US arms cartel. This deals would rather eclipse the bail out deal of $ 700 billion by the US govt to stave the presnt financial crisis.Manmohan Singh would go down in the history for this historic blunder and bleeding the country .
BJP supporting the cause of China and Pakistan who were the only two countries dead opposed to India getting the Nuke deal. Has BJP become an ally of China and Pakistan???
Hats off to Prime Minister. We want to come out of nuclear isolation to achieve greater economical feat. I don't think we can get a better deal since we are not in a position to dictate terms to America. We need this deal more than US that is the reality. Nobody can reason with communists because it bothers their motherland China. But let the BJP should atleast shut its mouth to regain some of the respect it lost in opposing this India specific deal.
This is a welcome deal and India is sufficiently a mature democracy that will not sacrifice the national interests. Our PM has done well.
I simply dont understand this deal, UPA hails the deal, BJP and CPI says the deal is totally a dead deal for India. Pakistan is begging US for a similar deal. Bush is happy with the deal, several parties in the US are unhappy because as per them the deal is tilted towards India's favour. China is against the deal. Now for the analysis, does this deal stop you from further testing of nuclear weapons, yes it does. Do we really want to keep testing nuclear weapons - I dont think so. At the end of it we already have proven technology in terms of developing nuclear arms and our efforts should be now on developing delivery means and methods. At the end of it a nuclear war is a no win game for any country and so its better to limit what you spend on such a technology. At the same time nuclear technology for civilian purposes can secure our energy needs and provide economic development of our country. Our PM has my vote for showing the courage to take the country forward.
First inteligent comments from an indian. Thanks you
All fine and good, but I dont think India has really perfected Nukes yet. Not really possible with just a couple of tests. Not saying that they should test more though...
Humm.. Well said Anthony.. bang on point... Anon.; please explain what is to be done to make sure that we are 'Perfected at nukes' Make and test them every day?? ok even if we sit in our home without electricity?? who cares.. we want to test.. I dont know why.. but we want to test.. ..I dont understnad BJP.. why comman man needs to do nuke test. and how this deal is hrtig comman man. And was it really possible for us to test without any after effects, had we not signed the deal.
