London British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has described his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh as a great leader not only of India but of the world.

"It is a great honour for any democratic country in the world to have a leader like Dr Manmohan Singh. He is a great leader not only of India but of the world," Brown was quoted as saying by leading NRI Labour MP Virender Sharma.

Sharma, who was speaking at a function organised by the Indian Overseas Congress here last night to celebrate the victory of Congress Party in the recent general elections in

India, said he had raised the issue in the House of Commons and replying to the discussion Brown had praised Singh.

He said Singh has emerged as one of the three major leaders along with US President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown at the recent G-20 summit in London.

"As an Indian I feel proud of India," he said.

Sharma said that the Indian diaspora in the UK should send a united message to Singh that it was fully behind him so that India could become a major economic power by 2020.

Indian Overseas Congress president Balwant Kapur said Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and youth Congress leader Rahul Gandhi were mainly responsible for the party's good performance in the recent elections.

Former Punjab minister Malkiat Singh and several NRI leaders also spoke at the function and said the mandate was in favour of stability, transparency and good performance.

What achievement his Govt had in last tenure? No achievements except getting the nuclear deal. This year they mostly in majority but cant see any major progress yet. Still aam admi, bijali, pani are our slogans in elections and which proves we are still poor (Slumdog millionares).

INDIA BADLY REQUIRES PEOPLE WITH " SERVICE, SACRIFICE AND PATRIOTISM by B S GANESH, BANGALORE on 10 Jun 2009

No doubt Manmohan a great scholar. But for India he is a stooge of Congress. Unless he reduces salary perks etc of hinself and other politicians and removes all tainted politicians from Parties, I don't consider him great. All politicians join politics only for selfish interest and not with patriotic spirit of " SERVICE, SACRIFICE AND PATRIOTISM ". INDIA BADLY REQUIRES PEOPLE WITH " SERVICE, SACRIFICE AND PATRIOTISM " B S GANESH, BANGALORE

Brown should behave like a gentleman and avoid cracking cheap jokes at India's expense.

I totally agree with Mr.Brown statement about manmohan Singh.During his tenure India has made tremandous progress.

Manmohan and Gordon Brown by Pradipji on 09 Jun 2009

MMS a great world leader? Gordon Brown is losing it. No wonder he is on his way out. Hopefully MMS will retire soon.

OK Mr. Brown by himanshu on 08 Jun 2009

OK MR. Brown: Can you count what he has done, or indirectly you want to praise that Italian old babe.I fully agree with people (who posted here esp dooky) on this issue. But who is voting for these people.?

Manmohan Singh is a great leader of the world: Brown by shan on 08 Jun 2009

I fully endorse what Gordon Brown has said of Dr Manmohan Singh. As a person of Indian origin, I am very proud that India now has a remarkable prime minister. I am sure his policies will help India gain greater heights.

Good Leader by freddie on 08 Jun 2009

If MMS is a good leader then why was he not able to make decision during the mumbai 26/11 attacks. Actually he was basically waiting advise from the Italian waitress who don't know what is India culture and India's attics. Just by reading Hindi translated In Italian languages does not mean she knows everything. Well everyone in India know that MMS is a puppet of Congress. What a shame for India we can't find a leader which as a population of 1 billion. Gordon Brown is saying he is good leader because he know that MMS listen to Italian Waitress and acts according to her tune what a shame

INDIAN POLITICS by dooky on 08 Jun 2009

Not a Statement in a World Forum !! by Aniyan on 08 Jun 2009

Although receiving applause and praise abroad for our leaders is heartening, this seems too much, if the statement is right. Manmohan's share of contribution to the world is virtually nil. But his contribution in India for the economic purpose is quite high. We Indians do acknowledge and appreciate it. Beyond that, he cannot be placed into a position of good administrator, good diplomat or a leader who understands the world affairs, except that he attended some of the meetings of world Bodies. Rajiv had taken particular interest to promote SAARC, NAM, Commonwealth etc. but Manmohan confined himself to nurture the economy, which the Indians appreciate. What made Brown to shover so much of praise for the Indian PM, as stated by an NRI MP. Since, it was not in a world forum, this "reported" statement should be taken as a talk in private, than giving any diplomatic importance.

Does a good economist make a good leader? by Shah on 08 Jun 2009

A leader is the one that protects his people and guides them to prosperity. Economic prosperity is short lived in democracy if sense of security does not exist. Attacks after attacks have been made in India, but our so called "leader" only acted 6-8 months before elections to change the home minister. Plus, there is a behind the screen party leader who does most of the "Leadership" work for our well resepected Economist. I agree that PM Manmohan Singh is a good economist with vision to lead financial prosperity for India, but not a "True" leader who will go any length to protect his people first. Mr. Singh, personal security comes before energy security or the(123 agreement)

Secretary by Rajendran K on 08 Jun 2009

This is the true comment made by a sincere Prime Minister

Great Leader by rama on 08 Jun 2009

No doubt manmohan is a great leader. It is a great honour for any democratic country in the world. Manmohan singh's leadership is going to give a great step-up to the nation.

manmohan is a leader by gopinath on 08 Jun 2009

MANMOHAN IS A LEADER,BUT SONIA AND RAHUL HAVE NO ROLE IN THE SUCCESS OF MANMOHAN,IF MANMOHAN WAS NOT PROJECTED PM CONGRESS WOULD HAVE LOST ELECTION

Brown is wrong by Indi on 08 Jun 2009

Once MMS during his visit to UK had praised British rule in India. Dont understand for what reasons he praised. India was looted of wealth during british rule. Perhaps Brown is returning the favor by calling him a great leader. For every decision MMS would be taking directive from Janpath. How he can be a leader then? Only Lal Bahdhur Shastry was the true leader India ever had and the best prime minister India ever had.

Manmohan is a great leader by S.L.J.Gallyot on 08 Jun 2009

He is the best PM any country can have,a man like him swells any patriotic Indians heart , yet we have BJP"leaders" denouncing him and attacking him personally.Maybe the saying "pearls before swine" is an apt way to end this mail.

its a political statetment by Chandra SG on 08 Jun 2009

it is just a political comment..!! Manmohan is a stooge for 10 Janpath..!

Leader - or Follower? by arun kumar on 08 Jun 2009

Manmohan Singh is an able administrator, economist but Leader - "NO".Late Gandhiji(even if one opposes him) was a leader,Late Lal Bhadur Shastri was a leader. Leader is one who has crediblity before more than 50% citizens. Today India is without a Leader, why because not even one name would be acceptable to more than 50% of people of India irrespective of the party he/she belongs too. We ourselves did not hear the British PM say that - even if he said - it is his personal opinion which should not be given undue importance.
