London It appeared like a mutual admiration society with President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh effusively praising each other after their first meeting.

The 48-year-old new American leader described Singh as a "wise" and "wonderful" man as the two leaders met on the sidelines of G-20 in London on Thursday night.

"First of all I should say that your Prime Minister is a wonderful man. He is wise and decent man," said Obama, clearly impressed by the economist-PM's persona.

"He (Singh) has been doing a wonderful job in guiding India even prior to being the Prime Minister along the path of extraordinary economic growth. That is a marvel, I think, for all of the world," the US President remarked, apparently referring to Singh's pioneering role in India's economic liberalisation.

On his part, Singh told Obama: "You are much loved and respected in India." Reciprocating young US President's lavish praise, the 76-year-old Indian leader said Obama had "brought a ray of hope" and the youth look up to him "as an icon".

Singh said under Obama's leadership, challenges like climate change could be met.

The Prime Minister said India and the US share "same dreams and same vision" and the two countries will like to work together to realise those dreams.

He invited Obama to India, saying a warm welcome awaits him there.

Obama acknowledged the role played by Singh in unleashing economic forces, because of which India was enjoying a "high stature" in the world polity.

The first black US President also hailed India's democratic and diverse character.

"India is full of diversity and energy and is complex just like the USA," Obama said.

Obama said the US sees India as a global partner and together the two countries can play a critical part in meeting the challenges of 21st century like climate change, science and innovation.

wise man by james robert on 04 Apr 2009

give credit to him. He delivers. He makes you feel proud , uncorrupted and reliable. Cough up the politics and swallow your pride. Go go Mr singh and god bless you many years in getting there.

Manmohan is a wise, wonderful man by Mohammad Mustafa on 04 Apr 2009

Most of world leaders who interacted with Manmohan Singh have almost similar opinion about him but back home according to few third grade politicians he is “NIKAMMA” and weakest prim minister of all time, I think Urdu phrase (GHAR KI MURGHI DAAL BRABAR) is most appropriate for this situation. What will happened to our country if party of such politicians will come to power. GOD SAVE INDIA.

Ill timed remarks by Frank Hamilton on 04 Apr 2009

Statesmen like Obama should realise that this kind of certificate is ill timed, with Elections in India being on the anvil. And if at all he finds him so good, why does he not also give him the good advice of contesting a Lok Sabha seat, instead of coing in through the back door.

He's Polite by Varun on 04 Apr 2009

Shri Manmohan Singh is just enjoying his 15 minutes of fame in the Big boys club. Obama also told the Brazilian President that the latter was the "most popular politician on earth.", and added "that's because of your good looks". Obama is just being polite, i wont take him seriously on this.

Anti-Hindu by Ven on 03 Apr 2009

I too admire Mr Singh for the economic reforms he started under Mr Narasimharao who should take the credit for the work. But this US president praising Mr Singh, I see it as a support for anti-Hindu sentiments. Hindus are treated like a minority in their own country under congress regime. It is sad. Can it be like this anywhere in the world - where a majority is treated like a minority?

Manmohan is a wise, wonderful man: Obama by Playfair on 03 Apr 2009

PM Singh is indeed a wise and respected man but he is no politican, which is true as he is a unelected PM

Without reading too much between the lines; at the risk of being naive I think it feels good when grown up people respect and publicly complement each other.

All that butter and not enough roti. by DILIP/FRANCE on 03 Apr 2009

You have to be brave to speak the truth. Those who come to praise are also capable of burying the wise and wisdom endowed, caes in point is Ceasar. Dr Pandhakar should stop deluding himself with childish fairy tales. From where we are it appears he is chasing bubble and is on high.

Respectable Man by nsh85 on 03 Apr 2009

I agree that he is good gentle man and expert.. but our prime minister is not limited to handling only Economic, finance and foreign affairs he should be independant and free to take decision on national issues, he should also concentrate on other portfolio

Amusing by Rohit on 03 Apr 2009

Amazing and widely amusing to know about the qualities MMS possesses. It is an eye opener to know that MMS is the leader of India as of now. I was under the impression that the leader was Sonia Manaio.

He is a intelligent and Honest Person but PM? by Kamal on 03 Apr 2009

No Doubt he is a wonderful and honest person. He also has very deep knowledge of economic factors involved with the development of our motherland and we should be proud to have him. Do not get me wrong but as Prime minister you should have knowledge of all the areas like foreign policy, defense, social, science etc etc, and that is the reason we also have various department under Prime minister supervision. As a prime minister you should have knowledge of all the areas and should be ready to take the bold decision in all the field with the assistance of various ministries , economy being the very important area too. Honorable Person like Dr. Manmohan singh, Formar President A P J Kalam should always be(as long as they are fit) in the special advisory committee of planning commission of India, irrespective of Central government.

Wise Man by N.Swaminathan on 03 Apr 2009

YES Dr.Manmohan Singh is the wise person and gentle statesman that I have seen in my 46 years of life. The credit for unearthing ability to lead the finances of India should go to Mr.P.V.Narasimha Rao - an Indian born Prime Minister who spotted the Reserve Bank Governor Dr.Manmohan Singh. But being wise is not good for poltiics but he should be free, independent, courageous to take his own decision rather than depending on No.10 Janpath Road, New Delh. A wise Primary Minister should not be nominated but has to be elected by the peole to uphold th democratic principles of a leader of the people, by the people and for the people just like Mr.Obama.

Wise man--comment by Prof. G.Sharma on 03 Apr 2009

I fully agree with the comment that our PM, Dr. Manmohan Singh is a very learned and wise person. Having quality of an academician, he has definitely some limitations to tackle the present days' politics of India, which are being dictated by all social evils, corruptions, lawlessness, unruly mind-set of the people etc. It is also very difficult to compare our form of democracy with that of USA, because USA has two(2) parties to decide the democratic leader, while in India, it is decided by 30-40 parties, leading to squabbles amongst them. Then, where remains the quality! Further, there is hardly any comparision bewteen the education-level of voters/public in India with that of voters/public of USA. In fact, there are hardly any point where a debate can be equally fought between and USA. While USA is a highly developed country and our India is still a developing one. So, I feel example of a person, like Dr. M.M.Singh as our PM, is required to guide a courrpted society like India's, in order to bring India to the fore- front in the world. THANKS.

You are good but I am a saint! by Indian on 03 Apr 2009

Hahaha, Obama is really being cheeky! What he really means is Mr Manmohan Singh is wise and wonderful, but I am wiser and more wonderful than him!" Fact is no politician ever praises others except to enhance his own reputation and for his own vested interests! It is an old trick going back thousands of years in human history.Of course our "meek" Manmohan Singh might disagree with this interpretation of Obama's statement!

Really? this?

PM by Paul on 03 Apr 2009

It is a well known fact that our Prime Minister is a man of action and not a loud speaker as our opposition leader. His integrity and excellent grasp of the issues facing the country are to be commended, I know for political reasons there will be people who are opposed to him. But if we take an impartial look, he is the best man to occupy the PM's office. The opposition leader was challenging him for a TV debate a couple of weeks ago, while the same person didn't allow the PM to put in his views about the nuclear deal in parliament. It is in parliament where the debate has to happen and not in TV studios. If anyone has seen yesterday's press conference after the G20 meet, the way our PM was answering the questions, other guys cannot even dream like answering in such an excellent manner.

PM by rohit on 03 Apr 2009

Our prime minister is a man of action... He acts as Sonia Madam tells him to. This means that his integrity is as good as Sonia Manio's integrity. His grasp on issues before the country are as good as grasp on melting butter. On debate... If he can't fight one to one then ho will he answer in Parliament... He's got to be the first leader of world with terrific speech quality... I term the quality as "Speak so No one Listens". I didn't see the TV but I can make out from your comments that it is gong to be as good as your remaining lunatic statements.
