New Delhi Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday underwent a successful coronary by-pass surgery at AIIMS, a complex beating-heart operation that took nearly 14 hours.

"The operation is successful. The Prime Minister was shifted to Intensive Care Unit at 2055 hours," the Prime Minister's Media Advisor Deepak Sandhu said.

The surgery began at 0715 hours and was conducted by a team of doctors headed by Dr Rama Kanat Panda of Mumbai's Asian Heart Institute.

It was extremely successful and was absolutely without any problem. It was on course, said Dr Sudhir Vaishnav, cardio-vascular thoracic surgeon and Director of AHI, who was constantly in touch with Panda from Mumbai.

Asked why the operation took so long, Vaishnav said since it was a second by-pass surgery on Prime Minister, "it usually takes this long." He said there were no major complications.

Heart bypass, which the Prime Minister had undergone 18 years ago in London, involves grafting of arteries of veins from elsewhere in the patient's body to the coronary arteries to bypass atherosclerotic narrowings and improve the blood supply to the coronary circulation supplying the heart muscle.

Six years ago, Singh had also undergone an angioplasty.

This was the first time that a beating-heart surgery, that involves doing the operation without stopping the heart, was performed in AIIMS.

"His condition remained stable during the surgery and utmost care was being taken to prevent any bleeding because of the stitching," Vaishnav said.

The coronary artery bypass surgery included replacement of older grafts performed on the Prime Minister in 1990 in the UK, doctors said.

PM's Surgery by V V S Prasad on 26 Jan 2009

He should have been operated by the reserved category Doctors. I dont know he forgets social justice when it comes to his life.If the reserved category doctors are not good for the PM how can they be good for the poor people of this country. Why the HRD minister did not ask for this.

manmohan"s 14 -hr long surgery by aditya chopra on 25 Jan 2009

If wishes were horses only fools shall ride them, manmohans willingness to get well irrespective of all good wishes is the crux,if he wants to get well, has faith that his body is the best doctor he will soon be back to work; The competence of the doctors is beyond question otherwise they would not heah or work as a top surgeon at asian heart institute ;HRD mninisitry ders not interfere in asian heart institute

HOW UNHEALTHY OUR PRIME MINISTES ARE by n.krishna on 25 Jan 2009

The first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru suffered from heart ailments. He suffered a stroke during a Congress Session in Bhubaneswar in January 1964. Nehru was also suffering from syphilis and eventually this womanizer Nehru died due to the third stage of syphilis, or the tertiary syphilis and it is called ‘aortic aneurysm’. Lal Bahadur Shastri who was PM between 9-6-1964 to 11-1-1966 had a heart attack soon after he took over as PM and had to cancel his visit to the Commonwealth Prime Ministers conference in London. The 12th Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao had a heart problem and underwent a bypass heart surgery in US in 1991 before taking over as the PM. He died of cardiac arrest on 23-12-2004. We had Gowda, suffering from sleeping sicknes and mental retardation. PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee in November 2000, had undergone a left knee joint replacement at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.

INDIA NEEDS A HEALTHY PM by n.krishna on 25 Jan 2009

In 1990 Manmohan Singh had coronary artery bypass surgery in UK. In 2004 he had angioplasty to clear his clogged arteries. On 14-10-2005 he was operated for carpal tunnel syndrome on both wrists. In 2006 he was operated on his left wrist.. On 15-9-2007 his prostate was operated and on 25-5-2008 he had cataract operation. On 24-1-2009 he had an 14 hour long surgery which was earlier planned as a 5 hour surgery, and five bypasses were done in blocked arteries. Manmohan should not allowed to resume work as PM for the health of India. He is sick and can be replaced with any donkey from the UPA or even with Dawood. India deserves a healthy PM and not one who is about to die. At the time of 26/11 what Manmohan Singh was seen mumbling and was not understood by most. Even though terrorist attack was going on for 62 hours there was a lack of leadership at the centre. No sane person will vote for this junk congress party which is now being controlled by a christian plant from Rome.

CABG by Aravinda Nanjundappa on 25 Jan 2009

What a shame on Indian surgeons. A simple coronary artery bypass surgery in USA takes 3 to 4 hours at the maximum. Why 12 to 14 hours? i do understand it is a redo by pass. I would have gotten Dr. Bruce Lyttle from Cleveland Clinic for such a complex surgery.

Foolish advice from foolish people. Just bark because you have a mouth.

Comment: by Tejasvi on 25 Jan 2009

Is Mr.Manmohan Singh doing a wise thing by stiil holding to PM's chair? What if there was a threat to the country?.Can individual be higher than Country's sovereignity. We all know that Mr.Singh did not pass the baton to another person before going to hospital.Does someone need to remind mr.Singh that he is running a country and not his home.Has'nt he put the whole nation in jeopardy? Are'nt these people taking country for granted. Why isn't IE highlighting these points?

Best Wishes by Sanjeev on 25 Jan 2009

Victory of secularism! but we should prepare backup PM by making Raul or Priyanka acting PM. by Shameless Indian Secular Hindu on 25 Jan 2009

This is victory of secularism! But we should still be prepared with a backup PM. In the future of secularism, brother secular Xtian Raul Ghandey or sister secular Xtian Prieyanka must be made acting PM. Brother Antony is already flying flag in Delhi after Sickh brother is in hospital. Also brother secular Xtian Raabert Prieyanka Ghandey must be made home minister of future.

Hope for the best, may his heart change more for the betterment of the countrymen and most of all may some bravery be induced in to it by more blood flow. I wish him long life with a renewed vigour. Let's hope he realises in time he is more of a sikh (and therefore, a real patriotic) than a Congressman.

Encouraging Indian doctors by Divyesh Raythatha on 24 Jan 2009

Many of our political leaders have been treated abroad or doctors from abroad have been brought to India to treat them (e. g. Vajpayee) at the cost of Indian Treasury. Dr. Manmohan Singh has given a nice example by getting operated in New Delhi by Indian doctors. Indian doctors are equally good and efficient in every manner. We hope, Dr. Singh would recover and join his duty soon.

The terrorist families and Jihadis must be in the front row to pray for him. After all he spent sleepless nights for them which must have contributed to his illness. Moreover he also gave them first right to the country's wealth.
