Maoists, Marxists two sides of same coin: Mamata

Kolkata Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said the CPM and Maoists were two sides of the same coin, and asked the Centre to take action against “the state government-sponsored terror in Bengal”.

“Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has a double face. Both the CPM and Maoists are two sides of the same coin and are unleashing terror. If the Maoists are banned, why not the CPM? There is no difference between Maoists and Marxists,” she stated.

Speaking to mediapersons at her Kalighat residence here on Sunday, Mamata said 69 per her party workers had been killed while several were missing. “Every day, our workers are being killed in different parts of the state... I have given all the evidence to the Union Home Minister on the violence unleashed by armed CPM cadres. The state government has failed to control the law and order situation. Now, it is for them (Centre) to take action.”

Denying any links with the Maoists, the Trinamool chief said: “If it had been so, our panchayat pradhan Nishikanto Mondol would not have been killed in Nandigram.”

Speaking at a felicitation ceremony for singer Manna Dey, who was recently named for the Dadasaheb Phalke award, in Kolkata, ex-chief minister Siddhartha Shankar Ray and former CPM leader Somnath Chatterjee also criticised the state government, saying development of the state needed to be put before politics.

Speaking about the current problems in the state, Ray, who famously led what some called a brutal crackdown to crush the Naxalite movement in West Bengal in the early ‘70s, said tribal problems cannot be solved through police activity.

“While companies make millions by tapping into minerals from areas belonging to these tribals, they survive by gathering grass, leaves and honey. The way to help them is by forming cooperatives, including tribal bodies, where villagers will be able to get at least half of the profit that these companies are making,” said Ray.

He added it was time to apologise to the tribals and accept them as brothers and work towards their development.

Somnath Chatterjee also echoed similar views and talked of a fear psychosis ruling the state. “Along with innocent people, protectors of the law are also being killed everyday. In a democracy, it’s ultimately the decision of the people. So why is there so much of bloodshed over such decisions? Politics in the state has become bloody, full of hatred,” said Chatterjee.

Maoists, Marxists two sides of same coin: Mamata by Saroj on 02 Nov 2009

For the first time, Ms. Bannerjee is talking sensibly. Over 32 years misrule of CPI(M), West bengal is turned weste Bengal and society is controled by Goons. Now this state is suppling construction workers to Bangaluru, Maid servents to Maharashtra and Goldsmiths to Surat.

Pranab-Mamata-Maioist by Mother India on 02 Nov 2009

For this violence main responsible is Mamata who has taken support from Maioist before election and continuing so, second responsible in Pranab Mukherejee, both of them to be in power in W.B. and centre joined hand with Maioist. What is Pranab and Mamata's answer on price hike, why they are sideline the soci-economic issues.

The end does not justify the means by Anirban Mukherjee on 02 Nov 2009

Those who adhere to ideologies that seek to usurp political (or other) power by force, manipulation, deceit or other over or covert means, rather than through democratic, just and truthful means end up in the same hellish political space that leads to confusion about what's right and what's wrong, loss of sense of citizenship, loss of hope, and loss of trust / faith (as everything becomes suspect, since everyone seeks to outmanouevre the others in order to gain more power, or to retain existing power, or to derail those whose turn may have rightfully come to ascend to take control of the reins of power). With the Marxists as well as the Maoists, respectively, anything goes as far as the ballot or the bullet is concerned. And where the end justifies the means, all sense of decency, humanity, justice and faith are lost. This is what is wrong with the politics of Marx, the politics of Stalin, the politics of Mao and also the politics of Jinnah and the politics of the Sangh Parivar.

Maoists and Naxals by Varinder on 02 Nov 2009

There is no doubt that Maoists and Naxals are traitors of the nation and every Indian citizen should help government to nip this evil forever. But this will be possible only if politicians with leaning towards Maoists and Naxals are taught a lesson as well. The game started by Miss. Mamta Bennerji is dangerous. How she can allege that Marxists and Maoists are two sides of the same coin, when her own government (UPA) was on the crutches for more than 4 years. A wing of Maoists or Naxals supported Mamta in Elections, and this fact can't be denied. No doubt Leftists have ruined Bengal and Kerala and should be wiped out democratically but first let Mamta shed the false mask she is wearing to settle political scores. All that glitters is not gold and so goes for Miss Mamta Bannerjee.
