Indore, November 17: Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has said that former Congress general secretary, Margaret Alva should furnish proof on her allegation that tickets were sold to candidates in the party during elections.

Describing Alva's allegation as "baseless", Scindia said that if there was any truth in it, she should furnish proof to substantiate it.

The Minister, who was to address an election rally in Indore on Sunday, told media that strict steps were being taken in the Congress against those indulging in indiscipline and even senior leaders are not spared.

Recently, Digvijay Singh had said that Alva should first furnish proof and then make an allegation of this nature.

Margaret Alva enemy for herself: Moily

Margaret Alva, who faced the wrath of the Congress high command, was "an enemy for herself" as she questioned the morality of the party with the charge of sale of tickets in Karnataka, senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily has said.

Rejecting Alva's charge of discrimination, he said that the Congress "has not not put a total ban on the kith and kin or the children of any politician" getting tickets.

"We are not happy that she had to go but it was inevitable particularly after the kind of statement.... She was enemy for herself. I don't think she needs an outside enemy on an issue like this," he told Karan Thapar on "Devil's Advocate" programme on CNN-IBN.

He was asked whether Congress had acted judiciously in stripping Alva of her general secretaryship and her membership of the CEC and if a coterie around party chief Sonia Gandhi wanted her out of the way.

Alva was unhappy after a ticket was denied to her son Nivedith in Karnataka and had spoken of adoption of different yardsticks on nominations to kith and kin of leaders in that state and those during the Assembly polls which are currently on.

"Right from the day one of gaining Independence, right from the day when we started getting into the elections, the Congress has not put a total ban on the kith and kin or the children of any politician," Moily, who is also a former Karnataka Chief Minister, said.

He dismissed suggestions that the party has ignored he issues of internal democracy and transparency raised by Rahul Gandhi while distributing tickets for the current assembly elections.

Mrs. Margaret Alwa's Questions by K.V.Shriram on 17 Nov 2008

No proof is needed and there is nothing to prove here ok. One of the senior party member asks a question for which no one has straight answers, what a shame, this is ugly, can congress party say to all its party members not to introduce their son's and daughter's into this party, let that happen for good. Thanks

Election Ticket Sale by Varind on 17 Nov 2008

Of course if Alva has a proof she should show to the media and rip apart those coteries who managed to shunt her out. In case she fails to produce any proof then she has done a great harmnot only to herself but to fellow politicians as well.

Scindia how he became an M.P by Nanda on 17 Nov 2008

How did this man Mr Scindia get a ticket to contest the election it is the family politics of the Congress party. The family politics has brought this country to this level .

political moral by M K Keswani on 17 Nov 2008

Considering Alva's son was given ticket, she would have not raised the issue. That is the kind of moral congress leaders have. Looking it another way, if she had not tried ticket for son and still raised the issue at proper forum, not in public, what would have been reaction of congress high command, they would have still thrown her out. Yes, in all probability because such thing can go on without knowledge of top leaders. If congress have will to come to power again, they need to select the right candidate for the top job, cheif minister in this case, and then leave to him to select the winnable candidates. But then what shall be the roll of central leaders, their power? They will not let that go away any way.

Margaret Alva by Vikas Sahay on 17 Nov 2008

a) There is nothing wrong with Margaret Alva getting sore over denial of a ticket to Nivedith. He is a capable person and should make a good legislator.b) Who the hell does the young Scindia maverick think he is? If he has problems, he should have come out with his retort earlier instead of waiting for Sonia Gandhi's assault of Mrs Alva that seems to have become a license for the Gandhi family's usual chamchas to wag their tongues instead of investigation her charge.Political opportunism at it's best?

Moily a liability by Nanda on 17 Nov 2008

This man was shunned out from Karnataka by the congress as he became a liability to the congress in Karnataka .

Party tickets by Peter on 17 Nov 2008

When political parties start giving tickets to their kins, it sounds like a hereditary business. Going from father to son and so on. It was ok in the past as there were few qualitified candidates. Now the political floor should be open for everyone to join who are qualified. When it comes to heriditary nomination, then some partiality will come as in case of Margaret Alva.

corrupt party by yohan on 17 Nov 2008

what we can say about this party which is corrupt from top to toe and does not want to take any action for rectifying it. not only alva, shivasankar, jalappa, makwana, et al say that tickets were sold on cash. the moil and antony committees should look into those allegations, rather truth, and identify the takers instead of blaming alva and others.

Congress legacy is sons of leaders by ram on 17 Nov 2008

what bullshit Moily is talking. Giving tickets to kith and kin was started from Nehru and the legacy is continuing till now. I think Moily is dreaming or under the influence of ethyl aclocohol while making these statements. PC has brought his son into the industry called politcs.
