Melbourne, February 3: Former skipper Mark Taylor may take over as chairman of Cricket Australia (CA) in 2011.

Taylor, who is currently a director in Cricket Australia, may present his candidature for the post after chairman-elect Jack Clarke, set to take over from incumbent Creagh O'Connor in October, steps down after a three-year term.

Clarke is seen as a tough-talking person, a departure from the soft approach taken by O'Connor and chief executive James Sutherland, and CA insiders fear the chairman-in-waiting could end being a diplomatic disaster.

The fears have led to some officials asking Taylor to push for his candidature right away but the affable former skipper is currently busy doing commentary and has therefore set his sights on the next term.

"They've used a quiet, thoughtful and courteous approach. (But) There's a feeling that Jack might just be a disaster, with his loud, outgoing ways. It's going to become a very serious issue," the 'Sydney Morning Herald' quoted a CA source as saying.

If Taylor bids for the post, he will have the support of Cricket New South Wales with its chief executive David Gilbert saying the former batsman is an ideal choice.

"It's something that the NSW board will push for and I think everyone realises that he's the guy that should do it because of his stature in the game," Gilbert said.

"There's no doubt that Mark would be the ideal person.

He's a former captain, is universally respected as an authority on the game. He's the logical choice," he added.

Mark Taylor by KanwalJJeet Sandhu on 04 Feb 2008

Mark Taylor, when you hear him commenting on match from the comentators box on TV, gives an impression of being much biased toward home team. He has not yet got over the fact that he is no more Australian player and a caption, but a comentator, whose job is more neutral. But sort of comments he puts on, I feel it would better for him to be CA cheif, than to be a commentator. He along with Michal Slater should stay 2 miles away from the commentory area.
