New Delhi, April 10: Welcoming the Supreme Court decision on OBC quotas, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, on Thursday pitched for reservation for economically backward classes among upper castes and backward classes among religious minorities.

The BSP chief also demanded that the Centre should redefine the "creamy layer" in times of the rising rate of inflation and high cost of living.

She told media that "I will be writing to the central government to extend reservation to the economically weaker upper castes and backward classes among the religious minorities".

The Centre should make an amendment in the Constitutionto ensure such quotas and her Bahujan Samaj Party would support this move in Parliament, she said.

Terming the SC judgement as "historic and important", she demanded that the Centre should ensure implementation of the quotas in higher education institutes across the country.

States where such institutes cannot implement quotas, should be provided help to do the same, Mayawati said.

"We will ensure full implementation of the OBC reservation in higher educational institutions in UP," she said.

She also said, as far as the creamy layer is concerned, Centre should have a relook at the criteria for creamy layer in view of the rising cost of living so that no deserving person from OBC category is left out.

Caste based resrevation by gautam on 11 Apr 2008

With SC nod reservation in educational institutions has come to stay in India in forseeable future.Mayawati is not wrong in suggesting reservation for economically backward among upper caste and also review of "creamy layer" from time to time depending on COLA (cost of living adjustment). With all political parties welcoming the SC verdict one is surprised who was spear heading agitation last year!! One thing is clear that all politicians are playing this for their political advantage and survival and congress has always remained in forefront for manupulations.Congress policy of caste based propoganda is divisive and taking advantage of constitution which was framed since 60 years back or so is now frought with dangers in this fast changing times where everyone is struggling to come on to fast track.I am tempted to say Bharatdesh is really Mahan.

Reservation for all by J.M.Manchanda on 11 Apr 2008

Now that caste is the mantra for securing benefits and there will be a clamour for inclusion among the OBCs, the politicians should go on adding more and more to the list ebery year so that in near future, the entire country would have been declared backward and treated equally. The Article promising right to equality to all citizens will also get honored.

Education should be in public domain by Dr.G.Srinivasan on 11 Apr 2008

Silly Indian politicians and public !!!!! None of these people know the real worth of education . Educated Indians pee on the streets spit and throw rubbish which even the most uneducated do not do in villages.Socially conscious Indians should bring education out of the shackles of Congress party, the politicians , the organized criminals sitting in educational councils, the NCERT, the UGC, the ICMR, ICAR, DST, CSIR and private universities which give degrees with money and there should be a revolution.Education should be in the public domain. It should train good citizens and not corrupt politicians government officials and corrupt judges.Free education from the shackles of these

New champion of upper class? by Murali Panicker on 11 Apr 2008

Why should Mayawati take the trouble for? The SC already clarified that determination of OBCs should be based on poverty, social backwardness ane economic backwardness.

Need for recording the creamy individuals by Som Karamchetty, PHD on 11 Apr 2008

The creamy layer consists of those people who have made it economically in the society. It is time that India developed a national measurement and recording system that knows how much a person’s net worth is. Once this is determined, there can be three levels set. Those at the bottom are given scholarships and jobs within their ability to perform at a satisfactory level on the basis of quotas. Those at the top are left alone to fend for themselves with their merit and money. Those in between are given loans to plan their course of action based on their merit. This economic index for individual net worth has another important advantage to the nation. As a person’s annual net worth increases disproportionately to his or her actual and declared revenue and expenses, he or she should be subject to the full force of the laws by the income tax department, the anti-corruption department, and the police.

Partition, please by Advait Vadantic on 11 Apr 2008

Self-immolation did convince "shameproof" politics. VP Singh got treatement in foreign hospital (Why not from SC/ST MANDAL doctor??). Whay is every other politician scared to reverse MANDAL ?? That is because the OBC society in India is GREEDY. And the "open category" is quiet and passive. RISE, my friends! Fight for a new homeland !!!Enough is enough. Partition is the only way out. Untouchability will go and reservations will go. Lots of NRIs will come back and/or invest in the "open category" countries. My little baby son has no future in India with a PIO card.

supreme court by rajiv on 11 Apr 2008

We need reservations in the supreme court too. Those ignoramus who passed this judgement need to feel the pinch of loosing their chairs to these modern day thugs in the garb of sc and st and now obcs

The Supreme Court. by jati hoon on 11 Apr 2008

Supreme Court, verdict, is a "CLASSY DECISION."It is a classless decision, proving once again, India is a caste-less society, and this is upheld by the highest court of the country, "ZINDABAD SUPREM COURT." At last, Sonia Gandhi was spared to make her decison and party heaved a sigh of relive.

reservations by Vidyadhar Akkaraju on 10 Apr 2008

The concept of reservations has shown to be detrimental to the very people it wants to promote. The country pays the price of it by losing qualified achievers to other countries where merit is recognized. The vast numbers of immigrants to the USA and other countries, know one of the primary reasons to leave their homelands was a perceived lack of recognition and opportunity. When the standards are lowered to fill the reserved category, the problem is compounded. If the minimum acceptable scores in competitive exams are set and then the seats not filled by the reservation candidates are open to the general competition, the system becomes more acceptable. Better than this system would be to provide everybody equal opportunity in schools and improve the standards across the board so that the backward classes have access to the same learning tools, and schools.

Chour politicians by Rajneesh Gupta on 10 Apr 2008

Does anyone disagree with this statement? If this feels offensive, then take a random opinion of 25 people on the street. Why ? Our most important issues are not even addressed in a systematic way. India is already dying, and will die more due to hunger with current rise of prices. If India would have done following since independence it would never be starving. 1. make modern storage graineries. It will save at least 20% of grains being eaten by rats or pests. These could have been made in every small city, so that farmers could pay a little amount to ensure preservation of their produce. 2. good roads and food processing industry which is capable. It would have ensured that all bumper crops do not rot, and keep on feeding even during next season. Envision, deep sea fish finding it's way to feed poor children in Kashmir and Madhya Pradesh. Hind sight is 20/20, but the problem is with Chour politicians even the fore sight is almost blind.

Dismantle Congress to save Bharat by Vikramaditya on 10 Apr 2008

Dismantle Congress to save Bharat. Congress is the mother of all problems in Bharat. Why after 60 years of partioned independence, we need reservations? Society should have been equal long before. Congress is the direct decendent of British, divide and rule. Divide hindus, muslims, sikhs etc and they divide hindus. SC can't go against Constitution, as our constitution makers never visualised such barbaric vote-banks by some parties. BJP have no alternate but to support, to balance the hindu samaj.

Caste based peaceful paritition of India by Advait Vedantic on 10 Apr 2008

Quit India! That is the mantra for "open category" people today. But I am not happy in California. I want to go back home with full and equal rights. All the ashes of self-immolations wont go waste. I can never forget a college-mate who hanged himself from a ceiling fan for falling short by a few marks.India should be PARTITIONED into smaller countries, and fair share of territory should be made into independent nations for "open category" people.

Appeasement politics again! by Karthik on 10 Apr 2008

This oppurtunistic dog should be shot at point blank range! She is trying to appease upper caste votes now by releasing such statements. She and Karunanidhi are the real culprits and should be thrown out of power. If she is interested in implementing quota for economically poor upper caste, then why can't that be done for other categories like SC/ST or OBC too?
