New Delhi Uttar Pradesh Government's controversial project of installing statues of Chief Minister Mayawati on Monday came under the scrutiny of the Supreme Court which sought an explanation from it for allegedly spending crores of rupees from the state exchequer.

The apex court issued show cause notice to the state government and Chief Minister after noting several allegations in a public interest litiattion (PIL) including that 90 per cent of the budget of the Uttar Pradesh Cultural department was used for installation of the statues of Mayawati, Bahujan Samaj Party founder Kanshi Ram and party symbol elephant.

"Notice to show-cause why the petition should not be admitted," a vacation bench comprising Justices Dalveer Bhandari and A K Ganguly said and sought reply within four weeks from the Uttar Pradesh Government, Mayawati, BSP and Election Commission which are named as respondents in the PIL filed by Supreme Court advocate Ravi Kant.

Kant alleged that the total money used by Mayawati from the state budget for 2008-09 and 2009-10 for such projects was to the tune of Rs.2,000 crore to "falsely glorify" the Chief Minister.

No sooner the order was issued, Mayawati's close aide and senior advocate Satish Chandra Mishra voiced his protest but the Bench said whatever he has to say he can to do it by way of reply to the notice.

Mishra, who resisted the issuance of notice, alleged that "it is a politically interest litigation filed at the behest of others (political rivals)" noting that even before the petition came up for hearing, the petitioners had gone before the media.

He said notice at this stage would open a larger issue relating to the use of public land and made a selective reference to Teen Murti Bhavan in the capital saying the land itself cost over Rs 500 crore.

However, the Bench was unmoved and said "whatever you have to say you can say it in the reply".

It reminded Mishra that it has only noted the allegations in the PIL which said "hundreds of crores of rupees" meant for developmental work were being used by the UP Government for personal glorification of leaders and installing their statues.

Before Mishra, senior advocate U U Lalit, appearing for the state goverment, contended that it was not the case for issuance of notice as the apex court in the past had passed orders in favour of the state government on the same issue which the petitioners are not aware.

Lalit was responding to the Bench which wanted to know from him whether he would like to file a reply to the PIL.

He said the issue has been going on for the past two years and "every single expenditure has been approved by the House (State Assembly).

Constuct roads and provide Drinking water by Baiju AS on 30 Jun 2009

If Mayavati wants her to be remembered she needs to spent these money on providing good roads and drinking water projects. She can name this after her or her mentor Kanshiram.People will accept that.To know the sorry states of roads one need to travel only few kilometres from the capital Lucknow. These ststues being erected will only help crows and other birds to use as their toilet.

Ordinance about Installing Statues and Monuments by Hemant Shah on 30 Jun 2009

The parliament will be well advised to pass an ordinance to create strict guidelines about who can create monuments and to honor whom. This self-aggrandizement should be curbed, especially if it is done with public funds.

While the Sun Shines by Hemant Shah on 30 Jun 2009

I am sure no one else would want to erect statues to honor Mayawati. She also knows this. Therefore she had to take matter in her own hands and while she is in power. Because once she loses power even her sycophants would desert her.

Mayawati statues by daljit on 30 Jun 2009

Inspired by great leader Kim of N korea and other dictators. Who have nothing to give the public but promoting themselves. These leaders take advantage of the poor and illiterate people of the country. They are bunch of shameless leaders who take the poor masses for a ride. It tell us about sorry state of Indian politics that we have these selfish, mean, corrupt and self glorifying leaders.

Maya ka Hathi by Digolus on 30 Jun 2009

Well CEC should just disqualify Elephant as her election symbol and ask her or her party to pay back the cost incurred in placing her statue, and pay rental for the land where her statue stands.

CONSTITUTIONAL DECLINE by Alok Nath on 30 Jun 2009

We have been crying hoarse for the last decade when Mayawati shared Chief Minister's post with BJP on six monthly rotational basis. It is abuse of democracy and violation of Constitution to do so but still this malpractice was repeated twice by Mayawati. On both the occasions Mayawati chose to become CM in the first six-monthly cycle and refused the chance to BJP twice. Both the parties proved to be greedy and power hungry. Both actions were illegal and unconstitutional and destroyed democracy. The day this sordid story of dividing Chief Minister's top post happened in UP in India,it signaled the DEMISE OF SOUL OF INDIA.But the soul of constitution residing in the deeper recesses of the highest court of the land was not awakened;neither did it awaken the souls of PRESIDENTS/SPEAKERS, the uncrowned keepers of SOUL OF CONSTITUTION.No use bemoaning now because DECAY OF CONSTITUTION is taking deeper roots in India with an ignoble start from UP! Prevent the declining slide if you can. Thanks.

Statues of Mayawati by Roshanlal on 30 Jun 2009

Are all the statues of Gandhi, Nehru etc are erected by private persons? The expense of all these statues is also from public money. The maintainance or Rajghat or Trimurti Bhavan is also from public money. It is not monopoly of Gandhs and Nehrus to have statues all over india.

mayavathi and statues by K.S.Rao on 29 Jun 2009

dear Sir: Mayavathi is just following the abuse of power the congress members of India started right after Independence. There used to be statues of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna or Lord Shiva and people derived spiritual message and strength and refrain from sensual excitements. Then came Mughals who installed Mahals and plundered the resources of the land they occupied. Then came the British who installed churches, Governor General Palaces, King George and Victoria's statues. Thereafter came the Congress party leaders who installed Nehru and gandhi's all over and built some absurd things like samadhi for gandhi and do things every year exactly opposite of what ghandhi preached like obstain from liquor and live modestly within means and preserve the rivers and become self reliant without dependent on foreign technology. After nehru died his home became a musium and after Indira Gandhi and Rajive died their homes became musiums and Mayavathi now following the same abusing the power more

The issue is so much of public importance that even if we have not argued the honorable court would have issued notice.

The Statue Culture by Vidhi Maingi on 29 Jun 2009

Statues have been a fond hobby for the majority of India's political leadership, who seem bent on installing them at every street corner. Even those which go uninstalled become news, like the empty spot for a supposed Gandhi statue at India Gate. Mayawati's actions only belong to long present tribe, who splurge millions of their development funds and other public money in the names of Gandhi, the Nehru Family, Ambedkar and others. One only waits for the day when these too would be brought under the purview of the courts and questioned.

Hang Mayawati by Hero Vaz on 29 Jun 2009

Mayawati should be hung for her criminal waste of public funds.

Why was this not stopped before the money was spent??? by Rajesh Chary on 29 Jun 2009

Why is a PIL being filed now ... why wasn't it stopped when Maya first started erecting the statues? Was the Congress afraid that if Maya gets more seats in the elections - they'll be at her mercy? Congress govt at centre allowed it to happen - they are equally responsible.
