The apex court issued show cause notice to the state government and Chief Minister after noting several allegations in a public interest litiattion (PIL) including that 90 per cent of the budget of the Uttar Pradesh Cultural department was used for installation of the statues of Mayawati, Bahujan Samaj Party founder Kanshi Ram and party symbol elephant.
"Notice to show-cause why the petition should not be admitted," a vacation bench comprising Justices Dalveer Bhandari and A K Ganguly said and sought reply within four weeks from the Uttar Pradesh Government, Mayawati, BSP and Election Commission which are named as respondents in the PIL filed by Supreme Court advocate Ravi Kant.
Kant alleged that the total money used by Mayawati from the state budget for 2008-09 and 2009-10 for such projects was to the tune of Rs.2,000 crore to "falsely glorify" the Chief Minister.
No sooner the order was issued, Mayawati's close aide and senior advocate Satish Chandra Mishra voiced his protest but the Bench said whatever he has to say he can to do it by way of reply to the notice.
Mishra, who resisted the issuance of notice, alleged that "it is a politically interest litigation filed at the behest of others (political rivals)" noting that even before the petition came up for hearing, the petitioners had gone before the media.
He said notice at this stage would open a larger issue relating to the use of public land and made a selective reference to Teen Murti Bhavan in the capital saying the land itself cost over Rs 500 crore.
However, the Bench was unmoved and said "whatever you have to say you can say it in the reply".
It reminded Mishra that it has only noted the allegations in the PIL which said "hundreds of crores of rupees" meant for developmental work were being used by the UP Government for personal glorification of leaders and installing their statues.
Before Mishra, senior advocate U U Lalit, appearing for the state goverment, contended that it was not the case for issuance of notice as the apex court in the past had passed orders in favour of the state government on the same issue which the petitioners are not aware.
Lalit was responding to the Bench which wanted to know from him whether he would like to file a reply to the PIL.
He said the issue has been going on for the past two years and "every single expenditure has been approved by the House (State Assembly).

The blatant action of Mayawati, the Chief Minister, Grabing land and misusing public maoney need outrightly condemned and warrant legal action. She should not get away with such misdeeds. Its high time now such leaders should be aken to task. Public should also keep such nefarious activities in mind and not return such leaders to power for its misuse again and again.
our leaders come begging for votes and when once hey are installed as ministers chief minster or Prime minster and his cabinit minister tey become the masters rather dictators and their word and orders have the highest values they do not care for the public or their interests.they are all important and powerfull can spend as much as they like by fair meas or fowl.they are not ashemed of their wrong and despotic doings.Mayawati spending carores from the public money froe intalation of her statues and Indra gandhis storming of golden temple using mighty indian army to kill innocent people and rajiv gandhis khoon ka badla khoon and when a big tree falls the earth is bound to shake.and now all the democratic governments since 1984 have kept thousands of innocent sikh young men in jails without trail.is this the democracy we should be proud of.why the government could not punish the leaders and police and army officers responsible of killing thousands of innocent people. Please think and ac
How did people elect her...
Expenditure of 2000 Crore when the state doesnt even havebasic infrastructure This is criminal... Politicians like these should be tried in the court of law...
Supreme Court has done it for the crores of people living in India under poverty. their money is spent to install Statues and simbles. A resposible person can't do it. She should be punished for misusing her Power as it will give a positive message to those whose ambitions are the same.
Maya, pls install your statues not only in UP but across India even if it is against the interest of SC or against interest of Govy ot against interest of God. Goinda, Goinda, Goinda, Goinda, Goinda, Goinda, Goinda
This is a glaring example, how India would look like if Mayawati like individuals take the mantle of power. Shame to Prakash Karat and other so called third front leaders to have gone after such an idiot requesting her to lead the country. How this leaders collapsed so pathetically !!! India needs persons with intelligence and wisdom to lead the country; not such idiots.
Mayawati has lost all her credibilty in front of all dalits as well as others. it is too much. I was a supporter of Dalit politics but this kind of attitude cannot be tolerated. One thusand Crore rupees is a huge amount that spent for nothing.
Maya is magic. So are the statues installed by her.Indeed they will be well used by birds and animals.Unknown persons once,it is again maya, they have been catapaulted to power.Such person with uncertain tomorrow feel they would be remembered only through statues and not hard work.Mayawati.Mulayam Singh,Lallu Prasad and Modi in Gujerat have got power without much sacrifice or service to the people.India is a mand of mysteries and these persons can only thrive and prosper in India. The Supreme Court should punish such leaders and make them Chakki Peesu leaders and not political heads of states.God bless India.
The Court woke up after her spending crores of rupees from the exchequer of UP, when the State actually going back from back in poverty. There had been no political parties or public organizations to raise voice against this injustice a lady in power was showing. Tomorrow, she might instal her naked statues !!
I wonder how come Lalu did not get this idea ahead of Mayaben? He must indeed have a lots of self control. Admire him for that. Otherwise I can not imagine how our railway engines would have looked like. Vow !
Government should act as per the public needs and intrests.Rulers wasting public money for their personal and party interests definitely condemnable. Instead of showcasing their interests government should concentrate to provide the basic amenities for the people. People expect the different people benefitted services from govt but not the statues
Our so called dalit neta, Mayawati, must be admitted to mental hospital immediatly. What is the point to blow up these much money just to satisfy own ego instead doing something really innovative. She could have spend those money on welfare of dalits and could have gained some respect. She is completely stupid and must be wiped out by any senior authority. I am fed up to see such lunatic minister in indian politics. It must be over now. Someone pls take some action and save india from such idiots.
What is required is the supreme court should not only rap the administration, but also pass a order to attach all Mayawati grand properties in Delhi/Noida to pay back the exchequer for these projects.
Mayas statues speak a dangerous trend in indian politics. She has used public money to install statues for her. she claims it is upliftment of deprived class. This is no excuse for the misuse of public funds. Other political parties are keeping quite fearing sc backlash. This is appeasement of SCs like appeasement of minorities so long practised by parties in power both at center and the states for the past three decades. How can the postition of SCs improve by installing statues of Mayavathi? How their rights and life will be affected if the statues are not allowed to be installed? The supreme court should immediatele dismiss the government and demolish all the illegal constructions. Mayavathi should be debarred from contesting any election for another fifteen years. No other leader should ever think of misusing public money like this
