Ludhiana, August 02 City Mayor Hakam Singh Giaspura seems to be in the soup over claims that a few factory owners in his ward shifted the sewer overflow to another ward in Giaspura with his permission.

Sewer blockade and water mixing are the major problems persisting in his ward. To steer clear of these problems, some industrialists shifted the entire sewer flow towards Congress councilor Baby Singh’s ward.

Newsline team, which visited Giaspura to do a reality check, found that sewer overflow had ruined the main road of the city with big potholes and water logging.

However, in the inner lane where Giaspura’s ward ends and Singh’s ward starts, the sewer overflow problem has been sorted out in a strange way.

The entire sewer flow was shifted towards Singh’s ward, and was falling in a vacant plot in front of a few factories.

Sources revealed that a few dyeing units in the Mayor’s ward also release their water in the evenings and as the flow is diverted towards Singh’s area, many lanes get water logged everyday.

The Operation and Maintenance (O&M) cell has expressed its helplessness in solving the problem. As per the information available, if sewer pipes are laid in one of the lanes, the entire water flow can go towards the main road and hence the problem of water being collected in a vacant plot can be solved.

After Newsline enquired about the problem in the area, the O&M cell came up with a sewer project immediately. They have also kept sewer pipes in the area, so as to assure the industrialists that the work will be done soon. However, the sewer line has not been cleaned till now, as the JCB machine for this ward is not available.

Though Singh was not available for comment, her husband Vishvnath Thakur, who is working in the ward on her behalf, said: “I am aware that a few factory owners in the Mayor’s ward have diverted the sewer overflow towards my ward. I am all set to get the problem rectified. These water connections will be disconnected to give relief to our area.” The Mayor was not available for comments despite repeated attempts.
