Kolkata, August 05 Impressed by the development in Chinese cities during his recent visit to the country, Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya on Tuesday said that he was keen to adopt the Shanghai model for Kolkata.

Speaking at an interactive session organised by the Bharat Chamber of Commerce (BCC), the Mayor said: “I think we should consider Shanghai as a model for the development of Kolkata. I have proposed to the BCC to take initiative and develop the Park Circus Maidan as a model park. Although it has agreed to my proposal, the project is in a nascent stage.”

“We could not implement things like urban forestry and urban horticulture, which has been implemented by China, because we lack political will for it,” he added.

He said that he was trying to implement such urban projects through the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

“I have offered incentives to developers if they complete their project before the stipulated time. I expect it will work,” he added.
