Johannesburg Kolkata Knight Riders' IPL semifinal hopes lay in tatters but skipper Brendon McCullum is mum on his decision to quit captaincy. "At the moment, all that I am focusing on is the next few games. Trying to do whatever I can, try as hard as I well possibly can to get something going," McCullum said after the team slumped to a seven-wicket defeat against the Delhi Daredevils here last night.

McCullum had earlier decided to step down from the captain's job if the team missed the semifinal berth but the Kiwi didn't give a straight answer when asked if he was going to quit any time soon. I know I mentioned that a couple of games ago and that is something that I have got to look at. I'll work out with the coaching staff next year, what the goal is.

"But whatever happens I will be totally committed to Kolkata Knight Riders and helping to get us get some results in the future that we all are immensely proud of," he said. Looking back at the team's wretched run in the tournament, McCullum felt it was a combination of bad luck and poor execution that did the side in.

"A bit of both. When things are going for you, you get the luck. Things obviously aren't going for us at the moment. And we are not getting the luck go our way," McCullum said. Asked to pinpoint reasons behind the team's spectacular slide, McCullum said, "It's hard to put your finger (on any one thing). We haven't played consistently well across the board during each game.

"We get our batting going well and our bowling and fielding let us down. We get our bowling going well and our batting lets us down. We are not consistent across all the areas of the game," he said.

McCullum, however, had no complain against any individuals. "This is certainly not because of lack of trying, guys out there are trying as hard as we possibly can. Unfortunately things aren't going our way," he said. "The way we played tonight, that makes me very proud to be a captain. You walk off with smile on your face and positive body language because you know that you have had a team that had given everything that they possibly had," he added.

Bad Idea by Afzal Ahmed on 12 May 2009

Captaincy was a bad idea.... now cannot perform as well. Should have left it with Dada could have done both. Well .... lost is lost... its just a game

Unfortunate Saurav!!! Sharookh khan or Shameless Khan? by arun kumar on 12 May 2009

Great batsman and captain but his judgement on coaches has been deplorable. Greig Chappel, "John Boka known" both Australians are Dada's gift. Both digged grave for Dada later. Will after all this Saurav's love for Austalians, (the most fouled mouthed people in world) reduce? Legal proceedings against Sharookh Khan and IPL organising commitee should immediately begin, if Jadeja's claim of racial comments is true.

McCullum and alternate skipper by KRISHNAN.S on 12 May 2009

Buchanan's theory of rotation of skippers should have been accepted at least partially in the sense there should have been an alternate skipper in case the original one failed. No captain wants to resign.See the fate of Mumbai Indians. It is being led by a captain who is not in form having scored just 63 runs in last 6 innings.Let him be advised to stand down at least for one match. He got the brilliant idea of dropping Jayasuriya in a crucial match.Presence of Jayasuriya would have been very handy and he may have bowled better in that match instead of captain conceding 19 runs in the death over at a crucial stage of the game.Stepping down of this gentleman voluntarily and inclusion of a youngster would at least build up the team for future as this cricketer is not interested in playing 20/20 official matches.

Racism aginst Indian Players in Indian Premier league. Shameful. by STF on 12 May 2009

When Ganguley was captian, KKR won more games last year. He was the best Test winning captain for India. I am very upset that Indian players are treated bad in Indian Premier league. It only happens in India. We do not have unity and pride but keep licking white man's rear end because of color. IPL

KKR in the mess by Sudhakar on 12 May 2009

I understand that racial descrimination against Indian players ( Check Jadeja's comments) is practiced in KKR. It is shame. IPL belongs to India and Indian players are treated shabily!! It is shame on SRK as well who is shooting in Mumbai instead of being in South Africa. McCullum should look at immediate flight back home along with coach, instead looking at next game.

FLEECING SHAH RUKH KHAN by Mort on 11 May 2009

McCullum is hand and glove with crackpot John Buchanan. They are just interested in fleecing Shah Rukh Khan. What a money/party bonanza for them during the worldwide economic downturn.

KKR Team Chief McCullum by M.V.Muthu on 11 May 2009

If he wants to and allowed to stay as Captain, he would do well to learn how to speak colloquial language Bangla, well before IPL 3,for proper communication with team mates is essential.

The entire KKR setup stinks! by Zakir on 11 May 2009

I am sure there are no takers for the captains"s job within the team.Cant really blame mccullum alone for the debacle when the team performing under him is so incompetent. The entire KKR setup right from players, coach and the management have to take collective responsibility for the debacle.
