Kolkata, May 5 Two critically injured patients were forced to wait outside the emergency department of SSKM Hospital for hours on Monday as it was awaiting the official visit of Medical Council of India (MCI) members.

According to sources, Sunil Leth and Hemanta Leth were critically injured in a motorcycle accident on Sunday night at Nalhati in Birbhum. Both reached the hospital around 7 am on Monday.

The doctors, however, refused to admit them and asked them to sit outside in the scorching heat. The reason given was that an MCI team was to visit the hospital and all beds were full. Both the patients were finally admitted around 4 pm.

“I have inquired into the incident. The doctors should have either referred them to other hospitals or admitted them,” said Professor Ashok Kumar Ghosh, Medical Superintendent-cum-Vice-Principal of the hospital.

Meanwhile, a three-member MCI toured various departments of the hospital, including cardio thoracic, cardiology and neurology.

“This was a scheduled inspection. We evaluated the infrastructure for medical education. We will file a report shortly,” said Ratan Kumar Katokey, a member of the team.

Sources said that the hospital was recently given a facelift prior to the inspection.

Also, about 40 doctors were recently appointed from other hospitals as there was a dearth of doctors in the hospital.
