Ramanathapuram, January 27: The mentally challenged persons in and around Erwadi dargah were being treated worse than animals, a probe instituted to ascertain their conditions has found.

According to a report submitted by the Principal District and Sessions Judge J V Raj, who inspected the dargah on the direction of the Madras High court bench at Madurai, suggested that the government should set up a home and also a rehabilitation-cum-treatment centre for the mentally ill.

The report said that the relatives of the patients came to the dargah and offered prayers seeking cure of the patients.

"Some of them (patients) who were not cured were abandoned."

He also reported that many chronic mentally ill persons were seen chained to the trees. "The patients were heard abusing the visitors at times. The atmosphere around the dargah was also dirty and unhygienic. It is a pathetic site and nobody cares for them".

The rehabilitation centre should accept the mentally ill persons after obtaining permission from the Judicial Magistrate concerned. They should be segregated according to the nature of ailment and given treatment.

Dargah Business by Riz on 28 Jan 2008

The business of dargah in actual is not allowed in Islam. These are the practices of uneducated mass. The situation is pathetic which gives wrong signals, the fact is cleanliness of heart, soul and the body is mandatory for every muslim and according to Islam it is one halfth of the relegion. Government should put pressure asking the dargah authorities to maintain atleast a minimum level of tidyness in the dargah campus and also the Human Rights activist should look into the issues of mentally ill people.
