Meyer visits Bapu Dham Colony

Chandigarh, January 9 Bernie Meyer, the American citizen bearing a resemblance to Mahatma Gandhi was invited by YUVSATTA to honour nearly 100 slum women who were enrolled in the adult literacy programme. Parmod Sharma, Yuvsatta Coordinator, said that the initiative has benefited more than 1500 illiterate women in Colony No 5 and Bapu Dham Colony. A batch of 100 women was also given certificates by Bernie Meyer.

Female foeticide workshop ends

A Punjabi film titled ‘Har Mitti Kudian Nahin Phutdi’ was screened at the second day of the workshop on female foeticide. The workshop is being held at GC-11. The film depicted the oral tradition of the rural population. It also deals with discrimination against women in society. An interactive session was also held. A book written by a B A final year student ‘Meri Nibbhi Rahe Preet’ was also released. The college principal, Dr AL Gauba congratulated the budding writer. Manjit Brar, Vice-Principal and coordinator of the workshop proposed the vote of thanks.

Principal issued showcause notice

The UT Education Department has issued a showcause notice to Sumiti Kanwar, Principal, Dev Samaj School, Sector 2. The notice alleged that she was not attending department meetings regularly.

The Director Public Instructions(S),SK Setia, said, “Sumiti Kanwar has not been attending the department meetings. She does not inform the officials about the reason for her absence.”

The department has also sought an explanation from officials of SD Senior Secondary School, Sector 32, as they also have not attended the meetings.
