Researchers at Ohio State University have carried out the study and found that sipping milk with a spicy meal is an effective counter measure to garlic's lingering odour, the 'Daily Mail' reported.
In tests with raw and cooked cloves, milk was shown to 'significantly reduce' concentrations of the chemicals that give garlic its long-lasting smell.
One of the compounds -- allyl methyl sulphide (AMS) – cannot be broken down during digestion process, causing it to be released from the body in the breath and sweat, according to the researchers.
Although garlic is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals and helps to lower blood pressure and cholesterol its notorious pungency puts many off including it in the diet.
Previous tests have found that even brushing teeth after a meal fails to solve the problem. Now, it seems, garlic-lovers can breathe a fresh-smelling sigh of relief.
Now, the researchers found that drinking a small glass of milk can reduce AMS presence on the breath by 50 per cent.
The study, published in the 'Journal of Food Science', concluded that full-fat milk gave better results than skimmed and it was also better if diners drank with their meal, rather than afterwards.

Although I do like milk, I find it doesn't taste well with garlicy foods. Also, many adult Asians cannot digest milk well, and it can cause bloating, swelling, gas and worse. Yoghurt, on the other hand, has a nice taste with most garlic foods and is more well-tolerated by Asian digestive systems cos of the live cultures in the yoghurt. I don't know if it works as well on the breath, but I would rather enjoy the flavours of my food and NOT have tummy problems afterwards. Try instead eating parsley or cilantro or chewing on cloves or cinnamon after dining for fresher breath and no side effects. These have been used in India for the breath for centuries. Also, drinking mint or ginger teas help as well. Some bad breath comes from the digestive system rather than the mouth, the teas help with both.
this is nothing new... its an old practice for anyone who is following ayurveda
