Kolkata, August 12 A West Bengal minister on Tuesday asked the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) to suspend their agitations in the Darjeeling hills over the statehood issue to create a favourable atmosphere before the proposed tripartite talks.

“It is surprising that the GJM has agreed to relax the agitations only during the coming Durga Puja, while it should have stopped all forms of protests so that life in the hills could return to normal,” state Minister for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Ashok Bhattacherjee said here.

Outrightly rejecting the demand for a separate Gorkhaland state, Bhattacherjee said: “Any more division of state is not possible. We are opposed to creation of a separate state by dividing Bengal.”

Bhattacherjee is the CPM legislator from Siliguri.
