Melbourne Australia pace spearhead Mitchell Johnson has been awarded the McGilvray Medal for the ABC's Test cricketer of the year 2008.

The 27-year-old left-arm bowler, who claimed 63 wickets and scored 360 runs at an average of 22.5 during the last year, toped the poll ahead of Australia skipper Ricky Ponting and batsman Simon Katich, the Australian Associated Press (AAP) reported on Monday.

McGilvray Medal, which is an annual award given by the ABC Radio to the player adjudged by commentators to be the best Australian cricketer of the preceding year, is named after legendary cricket commentator Alan McGilvray.
