Hajipur, February 23: In yet another instance of vigilante justice, a youth, in police custody for allegedly murdering his friend over a petty dispute, was brutally beaten up by a mob in a government hospital in Hajipur on Saturday.

Ravi Kumar, a college student who fatally stabbed his roommate Om Prakash for using a mobile phone this morning, was forcibly snatched by a violent crowd from policemen who were escorting him.

The youth, who was in handcuffs, was dragged outside the hospital, kicked and mercilessly hit with bricks, official sources said.

TV footage showed him writhing in pain as policemen with batons in their hands and rifles slung on their shoulders watched helplessly.

Kumar was injured in the fight with his roommate who had died on way to the Patna Medical College and Hospital, the sources said.

He was arrested and taken to Hajipur Sadar Hospital.

As the news of Om Prakash's death spread, scores of people collected at the hospital, seized the youth from police and roundly thrashed him.

Hajipur is in Vaishali district where ten suspected thieves, belonging to nomadic community, were bludgeoned to death in Dehelpurwa village on September 13, 2007.

A suspected thief was beaten to death at Sahdullahpur village in Vaishali district again on February 15, 2008.

Two vehicle lifters were lynched by a mob in Haripur Kalan village in Araria district the same day.

My view by Venkat on 23 Feb 2008

and India is on it's way to become a super power? The funny thing is, policemen with weapons just sitting there, doing nothing. You know why they do that? Because when they were hired as constables, they were not taught anything about rules, constitution and their duties. Politicians recommend them on caste considerations and the police department hires them. So, they just put on the police dress and carry weapons. They are as illiterate as the common illiterate on the streets. Politicians don't care because they were fully protected with commandos as govt. expense. They are safe and their families are safe. This is the real India.

Vigilante Justice by M.S.Kamath on 23 Feb 2008

People have lost faith in the system, particularly in the police. Justice delayed is justice denied.People take law into their hands all over the country nowadays. Vehicles involved in accidents are burnt. It is time, authorities wake up and set right degenerating system.
