Kolkata, June 20 Following an alleged business rivalry, a group of hooligans fired at three youth in broad daylight on the Shambhunath Pandit Street, one of the busiest roads of the city, on Friday.

Of the two injured, Rakesh Shahu was admitted in a critical condition at the SSKM hospital.

According to the police, three locals, Rakesh Shau (24), Sanjay Joshi ( 22) and Sanjay Yadav (28), were having snacks at tea stall around 1:10 pm on Friday.

“Suddenly nearly 25 to 30 men rushed in. They had an altercation with the trio and then one of them fired three rounds at them. At the same time one person hit Rakesh with a rod on his head,” said Santosh Yadav, a local hotel owner.

“Soon, the assailants left saying that they had strong connections and the police would not be able to nab them,” said an eyewitness.

The police, however, said the trio was attacked by seven to eight men. Three empty bullet cases were recovered from the spot, as the injured suffered wounds in hand. Pointing at the manner of the attack, Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata Police (South Division) Rajesh Subarno ruled out the possibility of a murder attempt.

While a leader of a political party later claimed that the injured were its supporters, relatives of the injured denied any link with any political party.

“Both the groups ( injured and the assailants) supply building material and have support of the political party. Clash of business interests may have led to the incident,” said a source. Locals claimed that the assailants belonged to the areas near the Madan Pal Lane and the bastis around the SSKM hospital. “We have a few clues and are conducting raids at various places,” said Subarno.
