Mumbai, January 2: Two women were allegedly molested by a group of men on New Year outside a five-star hotel here.

Police said no complaint has been filed yet in this connection, but the local edition of a leading English daily published a series of photographs on the incident.

"No such complaint has been registered with us. We had adequate security arrangements outside the hotel, where personnel from the State Reserve Police Force were posted and closed circuit cameras installed," said Additional Commissioner of Police Archna Tyagi.

The incident took place at around 0145 hrs on Tuesday, when the women, along with their male friends, were heading towards Juhu beach from a hotel in the suburbs.

A mob of 70-80 men reportedly tore up the women's clothes, molested and groped them while their male companions, overpowered by the crowd, watched helplessly.

A team from the traffic police led by an Inspector reportedly chased away the mob and took the victims to the nearby Juhu police station.

"There seems to be some discrepancy about the spot of the incident. If the police officer had seen the happenings, he should have come forward and filed a complaint himself rather than just taking the victims to police station," Tyagi said.

Tyagi appealed to the victims to come forward and file a police complaint as the pictures published by the daily were "suggestive" of the incident.

A similar incident had happened exactly a year ago, when a girl was molested by New Year revellers at Gateway of India.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner D N Jadhav appealed to the media "not to blow the incident out of proportion", saying a probe has been initiated in the incident.

The police is in the process of filing a case on their own based on the photographs since no one has come forward to register a complaint, he said.

"I cannot keep the police behind every single person at all times. Things can happen anywhere, anytime. We are investigating the matter seriously," Jadhav told reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of Road Safety Week here.

shame of mumbai by vetriveeran on 04 Jan 2008

When things happen like this public simply do lip service by saying this is wrong and these peple are animals.Just immagine what culture is this to get drunk. When you drink you will not recognise the difference between your mother and wife. That means you will be out of your normal thinking and feeling when drunk. Just immagine how you will feel the same things happen to your mother, wife ,sister or daughter. The culprits are general public. Because you tolerate the filthy western culture. Now the root cause of the problom is midnignt parties, drinks, free mixing and immodest dressing. Is this our tradition and culture our fore fathers taught us.Did they sacrifice their life only to see these nonsense. Every good citizens must place a demand to the govt to close these kind of Shameless Hotels and pubs.We are no more slaves of Briton but we have become cultural slaves. stop police force to help and act for rich, powerful and elites and go after them. Police have to discharge their duty to the poor, needy and oppressed. There fore the root cause is not police but affluenza of rich. Do you have the statistics of slums in which how many raped and how many young widows because of govt policy to keep open liquor shops. Why dont you people follow Gandhiji and fight for total prohibition instead of closing the liquor shops on Gandhi jeyanthi.

Excess of anything always bad by Satya on 03 Jan 2008

Excess of anything always bad. It is for both men and women. While some men has become flesh-hungry animals, some women goes out with half-nacked body exposing fleshes. I am not pointing towards this two unfortunate women, but in general. Crime and punishments are mankinds age-old events, no society can be made 100% crime-free. How deplorable when men beat and burn their wives, wives poison their husbands and so on. We should not generalise this incident, but seek justice for the victims and punishments for the culprits. This was not the first and not the last such incidents.

Police Commisioner's statements by Prathap Chithapuram on 03 Jan 2008

Mr. Jhadav's statements are ridiculous. I want to know if he would make the same statement if it was his wife or daughter or daughter-in-law. In that case he would have put the entire police force on the case and they would have some culprit in custody after being beaten/paraded. I do agree that police cannot be everywhere and an incident similar to this had happened in NYC also. But police actions after the incident in capturing the culprits needs to be questioned. I am pretty sure that the police have an idea as to who the culprits are but are reluctant because of police political ramifications or connections. If Lalu's sons can go to three places and tease girls/woman with police security personnel in tow, then one understand how this incident was a possibility and the lack of police action thereafter. If DIG's (Orissa) son can rape a German tourist and jump parole/bail with his DIG dad's help and they have not been captured for the past 6 months to a year. That should tell how effective the police are. This is true even in a country like US where police and their kith/kin get away with doing serious crimes without any punishment compared to a common man/woman. Police are the same anywhere in the world but it is just percentage of successfully capturing the culprits that vary.

Mob molests 2 Mumbai women on New Year’s Day by Monika Bhardwaj on 03 Jan 2008

Molestation is one of the most a heinous offense. The kind of statements police officials are giving wrt incident are meagre ways to hide their own non-responsive patterns(which they r practicing from past many years apparently).Mob consisting of 70-80 people is a huge number and if police cannot see those many people then i wonder how they will going to handle the similar situations in future?

molestation of Mumbai girls by Lakshmi Mukundan on 03 Jan 2008

Maybe Mr. Jadhav was speaking relatively when comparing molestation to the murders, terrorist threats and other nerve-wracking things that Mumbai is constantly facing and which are his personal job to prevent. Sometimes, women too don't do enough to take care of themselves. Clothes that are okay for a party may not be appropriate out on the street especially at odd hours of the night, and add to that, the constantly "enjoyed" eve-teasing exploits between heroes and heroines being flashed daily from TV and movie screens, the general public thinks they are doing an acceptable hero-giri by molesting girls who they feel are provoking them. The lack of police presence, the wrong mind set of youngsters and thoughtlessness of some young girls who follow fashin trends without realising the effect on others may all be to blame for such incidents.

Agree by Satya on 03 Jan 2008

I totally agree with you.

ASHAMED by Mumbai Male on 02 Jan 2008

Ridiculous....Mumbai going the BIHAR way.....Makes me extremly sad and ashamed of being a Mumbai resident. And the number of 70 is unbelievable................what the hell !!ASHAMED!!

Lalu's sons taught a lesson for eve teasing at Delhi... by Demo-crazy on 02 Jan 2008

While Bombay police need to be kicked hard to act, in Delhi the public thrashed the two sons of LALU PRASAD YADAV who were caught eve teasing on new year eve. Their PSOs could not do anything. Read it on rediff - http://www.rediff.com/news/2008/jan/02lalu.htm

A coward is having difficulty facing the facts by DILIP/ FRANCE on 02 Jan 2008

Abe Nautankee, I am getting pissed off with youyou and your cabal have no damn right deleting my post. So lay off and go and break wind somehere else. It is all right for you to post arty farty twaddle and expect to get away with it.

Women must not degared. Wehindus respect our women. by DILIP /FRANCE on 02 Jan 2008

Varsha,I understand your gripe, but little will change as long as you have randy and selfish thugs like Nuatankee,is allowed to lurk about FREE, there will be no respite,to indecency, humiliation, salaciounesss, degradation and sleazyness.I will urge all civilised Indians to ignore this con man, who will try to charm you with his pious, incoherent twaddle and then he and his cabal will rob you. As long as you have frustrated and degenerates, are allowed to roam the street, these kind of rituals will keep on recurring. The Law Enforcement System MUST act firmly and decisively, against these screw loose meercats.

Mr.pradeep Menon is right. by "Dr.Minoo" on 02 Jan 2008

dear akal ke andhe Ekalavya -what has this whole thing got to do with Christians? Why do you write like a pimp? Accusing others has become your habit. The fact is,some Indians are still living like al-qaida types, and they do not mind misuseing women. Pradeep Menon has correctly stated that women is still ill treated in some parts of India. The civilized society has to stop these bullshiters.

All hopes gone by Pradeep Menon on 02 Jan 2008

Recently I watched a movie called Devaki, Its a true story about Devaki Bai, who had been sold to another man for Rs 5,000 … Women were auctioned during Panchganga, a panchayat held to hear matters of dispute … Women were asked to lower their saris and stand with stones on their heads. If these kind of things can happen in Indian panchayat, only GOD can save women in this country. Actually I was proud of Kerala, The 100% educated state of India.. Its all gone with the incident in Kochi.. Now who is telling India is developing?

This is the outcome of following blindly Western Culture by kumar on 02 Jan 2008

We are in an advanced state of decay. We have bulldozed morality in all spheres of our nation’s life. It is time for us to clean up and move forward. The media is corrupting the youth, promoting obscenity and flesh trade. These Item Girls only promotes prostitution, violence.. etc.. and ruin youth..We need Sushma Swaraj back to Check and nip the bud!!!It is easy money only, and not the hard-earned money, that facilitates the ostentatious life-style

Reply: Juhu molestation by "Nautankee" on 02 Jan 2008

varsha chandwani-You do have a point, because these nincompoops are still living in stone ages, they still believe that a women is made out of clay and therefore has no feelings. These jerks are like al-qaida rascals who want their women to be kept locked in small rooms or kitchens. Many of you women are very lucky at least you have the oppertunity to go to work or do shopping, but in some places it is not possible, because we still have this baba adam (ancient time) thinking.Normally a child cries upon birth, but when such jerks are born then it is their mummy who cries like hell......

Juhu molestation by varsha chandwani on 02 Jan 2008

I read the messages by readers on this site. Did it surprise me? No, it didn't. I am an Indian woman. I am now completely conditioned to believe that if anything happens to me in this country it has to be my fault. If I decide to go out with my husband/fiance/boyfriend on a new year's eve and I happen to be molested, it is of course MY fault. All men by just being men, are 'not guilty'. So we cant punish the molesters. So what do we do? The next best thing to do is go the Saudi Arabia way. Lets punish those girls for being out there and daring to enjoy themselves in this country.

Banana republic by Indian on 02 Jan 2008

This truely represents that the moral values of an Indian influenced by western views is low. A responsible Police commissioner says he cannot protect people. And the media publishes the pics of those women, atleast you media people shud hv seen that their face is not recognisable. Are you aware of the trauma and humiliation they hv to undergo? Seems we r living in a banana republic.

Molestation by Mansi on 02 Jan 2008

When did such kind of things happened in any developed western country? Its home grown culture where woman is not respected. Growup and realise west is much civilised than India.

Only uncultured would like to party all night with every tom dick and HAIRY by Ekalavya on 02 Jan 2008

So that is why you go for wild parties to get "liberated"

Women need to learn more about behaving descently by Harish Velji on 02 Jan 2008

I have to disagree with Patel MD. Here the issue is males behaving badly. this is not the first time it has happened in India. It is a regular happening and some gets reported. It is attitude like Patel that has displayed that is causing problem. High time one stop blaming the victim but punish those culprits harshly.Similar incident occured in Kochi with tourists from Sweeden. This non-sense must stop with attitude of Patel.

no excuse for atleast this time and no court involment by vikas on 02 Jan 2008

find all the persons who done with girls and handover them to public.public know how to treat this kind of peoples, other wise cut them peines or put them clothes and hand on the road, court can't do anything for them

Mollestation of women by Varinder Sarin on 02 Jan 2008

Such incidents are not rare in India especially on such occasions. There is no Law of the land. When there is a nexus between corrupt Politicians, police and criminals then then who is safe? If there is no such nexus, why any new CM wants top police officials of his/her choice immediately on change of Guards? if police is not in coalition with criminals how millions can get bogus passports, can leave the country at will, and some roam freely on roads. Therefore, the people of India can only look to the "Mercy of God".

mumbai molest incident by vetriveeran on 04 Jan 2008

you are 100% correct. you found the problom but what is the solution. people need to be educated and good people have to come forward and participate in the election process and not mere spectators.

Mob molests 2 women on New Year’s Day by Harish Velji on 02 Jan 2008

I am saddened to read that a group of man went bersek and went out of controll and molested two females during a new years eve function.Unfortunately in India many males do not understand to keep themelves off females.Whenever we have toured India we notice females feeling uncomfortable because of unwanted attraction.I hope there is some parentage responsiblity where they educate their males that their behaviour is totally unwelcomed

Indian Culture Castrated by Bollywood by MVC on 02 Jan 2008

This is the outcome of bollywood contribution and degraded society. Anyway, it's a shame to Indian justice system which took so many year Priyadarshin Matoo case. This Santosh Kumar should have been hanged within a month of incident, but the judgment took decade for decision, forget about punishment!Unless, it happens to the family of police/politician nothing will happen!

Taibilinized India by Frankly on 02 Jan 2008

This is shining or rising India where mob is fast turning into 'tailibinized' ways of conducting themselves.

lets inculcate the values of our great culture. by Deep on 02 Jan 2008

Lets us all contribute towards inculcating values of our great indian culture which has so much to establish a good and clean society.Only thing which we are lacking is moral values.Every culture whether western or eastern has some good qualities. This is just a sign of how we are loosing our values. We need one more Swami vivekananda to teach the lessons of Dharma and righteousness to the people of our nation.Brothers and sisters in this hour of crisis lets not put alligations on each other, but just wake up and do the best in our own simple way.

Respect freedom of women by Frankly on 02 Jan 2008

You want to recommend hindu version of 'burkha' for women. Change your mind set, learn respecting the freedom of women.

What Freedom? by Biswajit on 02 Jan 2008

What kind of freedom you are talking about - 'freedom to invite rape' or 'freedom to promote rape'? Do not drag Hinduism into this. If you look deep deep into Hinduism then you will learn 'woman has always been an object of worship and not enjoyment'. For that some limits have been set for both men and women.
