Mumbai, January 2: Two women were allegedly molested by a group of men on New Year outside a five-star hotel here.

Police said no complaint has been filed yet in this connection, but the local edition of a leading English daily published a series of photographs on the incident.

"No such complaint has been registered with us. We had adequate security arrangements outside the hotel, where personnel from the State Reserve Police Force were posted and closed circuit cameras installed," said Additional Commissioner of Police Archna Tyagi.

The incident took place at around 0145 hrs on Tuesday, when the women, along with their male friends, were heading towards Juhu beach from a hotel in the suburbs.

A mob of 70-80 men reportedly tore up the women's clothes, molested and groped them while their male companions, overpowered by the crowd, watched helplessly.

A team from the traffic police led by an Inspector reportedly chased away the mob and took the victims to the nearby Juhu police station.

"There seems to be some discrepancy about the spot of the incident. If the police officer had seen the happenings, he should have come forward and filed a complaint himself rather than just taking the victims to police station," Tyagi said.

Tyagi appealed to the victims to come forward and file a police complaint as the pictures published by the daily were "suggestive" of the incident.

A similar incident had happened exactly a year ago, when a girl was molested by New Year revellers at Gateway of India.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner D N Jadhav appealed to the media "not to blow the incident out of proportion", saying a probe has been initiated in the incident.

The police is in the process of filing a case on their own based on the photographs since no one has come forward to register a complaint, he said.

"I cannot keep the police behind every single person at all times. Things can happen anywhere, anytime. We are investigating the matter seriously," Jadhav told reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of Road Safety Week here.

New Year's day molestation by MOHAN DADDIKAR on 02 Jan 2008

Every intelligent woman knows that all males, except father and real brothers are potentinal rapists and accordingly she takes all precautions in the company of them. It is surprsing that some ladies, who try to appear to be liberataed and too bold throw all precautions to wind and join the mob of unruly drunkards who, under the spell of intoxication have lost all restraint and see every woman in their company as an easy target for molestation. This is not to justify the behaviour of the drunkarad males but only to warn decent ladies about the risk they are undertaking in participating in such parties where men freely indulge in excessive drinking.
