Ahmedabad, December 5: Playing the communal card ahead of the assembly elections, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has justified the killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a police encounter asserting that "he got what he deserved".

Addressing an election meeting at Mangrol in South Gujarat on Tuesday, Modi questioned the crowd as to what should have been done to a man who dealt with illegal arms and ammunition, to which it shouted back "kill him".

"Then if I have done anything wrong, let the government of Sonia Gandhi hang me," he said.

"The Congress President Sonia Gandhi speaks about terrorism. But she has lost the right to talk on this because even after a year of Supreme Court's verdict, confirming the death sentence of Afzal Guru, in the Parliament attack case, nothing has been done towards adhering to the apex court's order," Modi said.

The fake encounter of Sohrabuddin and later the death of his wife Kauser Bi in mysterious circumstances stirred a lot of controversy.

Earlier, the state government had admitted in Supreme Court that Sohrabuddin was killed in a fake encounter. Three IPS officers including DIG Border range D G Vanzara, who was formerly heading the Anti-Terrorist Squad of Gujarat police, were arrested in connection with the case.

Cong labels Modi 'Mr Death'

New Delhi, December 5:

Labelling Narendra Modi ‘Mr Death’ after his Sohrabuddin remarks, Congress today stepped up pressure on the controversial Gujarat Chief Minister, asking the courts and the Election Commission to take suo-motu cognisance of his election speech.

The party also said it will take appropriate action against him if it comes to power in the state.

"There are no two views that if we come to power, we will take appropriate action (against Modi)," Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said.

Alleging that it was for the first time in global political history that a sitting Constitutional authority has admitted to ‘cold blooded murder’, he said the phrase ‘merchant of death’ was not just ‘appropriate’ but in fact too mild for him.

"Is this not Mr Death himself speaking. This is a clear admission of guilt. Here is a pre-planned, deliberate, designed, cold blooded murder," Singhvi said.

He said the courts should take suo-motu cognisance of the admission made from a public forum and should convict him for cold-blooded murder, adding he wondered whether his next admission would have something to do with the disappearance of Kauser Bi, the wife of Sohrabuddin.

"This gentleman has conducted clear and gross contempt of the courts up to the apex court where several cases pertaining to the Sohrabuddin issue are pending," he said.

Singhvi also called upon the courts to expedite and conclude the trial of the Sohrabuddin cases.

He said the Election Commission (EC) must immediately take suo-motu cognisance of Modi's speech as ‘it is meant to affect the on-going electoral process in the state’.

Modi deserves a chance by Vinay on 05 Dec 2007

All "secularists" please answer - Look whats happening in West Bengal and the north eastern states - Illegal Bangladeshi immigration has totally changed the demography of these states. Bangladeshis now form 40 - 60% of almost all border states and the congress welcomes these illegal tresspasers only because more muslims means more votes for them. It is the Congress "high command" that ordered the Mumbai police to "go easy" on blast investigations to take care that "muslims arent offended by blast investigations"; the result? - terrorists got away with mass murderon our own soil. Wha can be more shameful and depressing? Forget being soft on terrorism, these guys are aiding and abetting it. I can go on and on with examples but i hope my point in made. I agree Modi's poor handling in gujarat riots was a huge wrong. But that was 5 years back. There havent been any major riots in Gujarat in the last 5 years. He has developed Gujarat better than any other state today.

It is OK to abuse Modi and Hindus (Hindu terrorism) but can not punish actual terrorists like Madani, Afajal Guru, can not talk about Taslima's treatment, Nandigram... What a great Secularism on displaY!!

MOdi is defiant by MOHAN DADDIKAR on 05 Dec 2007

If by chance, hidden terrorist like sohrabbudin is prosecuted and sentenced by the Highest Judicail court after three decades of meaningless arguments in our outdated judicial system, the Cong. Govt. wii have no guts to put him behind the bars. Instead, the Congress party will invite him to join the Congress Party, and get him elected to the Paraliament to add one more feather to its bogus secular credentials. Sonia is the true defender of murderer like Afsal Guru.

How would you feel?India is a democrac and has to function like a democracy. Otherwise there will not be any difference between us and Arab countries.

Avataari Purush Modi should defeat muslim terrorist party congress by Mrs Bhaanumati on 05 Dec 2007

If Hindus wants to live in india gracefully then they should vote for Avataari Purush Modi otherwise congress would made us second class citizens because UPA is already started acting on Sacchaar Committee agenda which recommended Muslims reservation in all the sectors. Islamic minded Man Mohan Singh announced that muslims will have first claim on all the resources. Congress and Communists are political parties of muslim terrorists.

Typical BJP Speak by pop head on 05 Dec 2007

CPM's Nandigram is despicable. US human rights record is also despicable. Typical BJP tactics - instead of apologizing to the nation for fostering a murderer and a person who has no respecter for rule of law as chief minister, they try to divert attention. Is the BJP saying that there do not respect human rights. Is the BJP saying that will foist murderers as chief ministers in the state. How desperate are they to retain power!!

Modi's Court by Jay on 05 Dec 2007

If Modi can judge who is criminal and who is not then why do we need our courts and judiciary. Lets live by modi's law.

Doing wrong----- by romesh.sharma on 05 Dec 2007

Come on Modi what you did and you intend to do is all right and justified for majority Indians. There are certain selfishly greedy power hungry anti-nation and anti-Hindu unity people who might see the things otherwise. You don't have to convince anybody of your action because people like Sonia perhaps realize the nature of the act,of which I am not sure if she has that kind of intelect, but certainly fail to realize the character and circumstances of the actor.Anyway Sonia's intentions and her characteristics of pure malevolence based and fostered through selfish motives is a well known and to give her the place she doesn't deserve is mistaken.Modi shouldn't have said "Govt of Sonia Gandhi".She may be President of Congress party which doesn't mean its her Govt. Its silly to talk about fake encounter of Sohrabuddin and politicize it for vote-bank.There had been very serious allegations about many fake encounters in J
