New Delhi With the Gujarat High Court upholding the appointment of Lokayukta by the Governor, the Congress on Wednesday criticised the BJP for its alleged “duplicity” on the demands for a Lokpal, and demanded that Chief Minister Narendra Modi should quit his post.

“The Gujarat High Court has given a verdict against the Gujarat government on the appointment of Lokayukta in the state. This has exposed the hypocrisy and double standards of the BJP where it demands a strong Lokpal at the Centre, but does not want to appoint a Lokayukta in Gujarat,” Rashid Alvi, Congress spokesperson, said while addressing a press conference here.

Alvi slammed the Gujarat government’s announcement regarding an appeal against the HC decision in the Supreme Court, and alleged that the BJP government wanted to hold back the appointment of Lokayukta by turning it into a legal battle.

“The BJP is not at all serious about appointing a Lokayukta in Gujarat. They want to drag their feet by entangling the appointment of Lokayukta into a legal battle. The BJP is not serious about combating corruption,” Alvi added, even as he conceded that the BJP had the right to approach the SC.

Congress leader in-charge of Gujarat Mohan Prakash demanded that the Narendra Modi-led government should step down. Gujarat’s state party chief Arjun Modwadia alleged that Modi’s regime was one of the most corrupt governments in the country.

Union HRD minister Kapil Sibal said that the HC’s decision had exposed BJP’s double standards against combating corruption and suggested Modi to accept the High Court verdict.
