Temple demolition

Ahmedabad, November 21: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has ordered a ban on temple demolition in the state with immediate effect. Modi's move came after his meeting with VHP President Ashok Singhal on Friday.

Singhal met Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to convey his concerns about the demolition of large number of temples in Gandhinagar.

The state Government in the past week has brought down over 90 religious structures, mostly temples, annoying saffron groups — VHP, Bajrang Dal and others — and a section of politically inclined sadhus.

The Government action has displeased the saffron workers to such an extent that VHP’s national leader Ashok Singhal, who was here to do spot assessment of the situation, had to calm their frayed nerves.

Singhal had been trying to broker peace between the saffron outfits which are at loggerheads, sources in the BJP and VHP said.

Singhal had criticised the BJP Government, saying that it was repeating the act of Mohammad Gazani, who had destroyed a number of temples in medieval Gujarat.

Modi and VHP by Naveed on 22 Nov 2008

Where are those who praised Narendra Modi for demolishing the temples for the sake of development? I would like to see their comments. What could they say? Poor chaps!! don't understand the 'drama baazi' between Mr. Modi and the VHP. Next time, don't be in a hurry to post your comments. Wait for a day or two for the scenario to takes a U-turn.

Modi stops demolition by P Neri on 21 Nov 2008

This seems to be a game plan of VHP, BJP, Bajrang Dal and others to fool the people. Is it not strange that it took the "wise man" Ashok Singhal more then 15 days to make a tamasha on the road and then meet Modi? All Encroachments that had to be removed have already been removed.

modi the jewel by pushparaj on 21 Nov 2008

religious belief is a matter of individual wish.no forward looking indian should mix religion with politics.why Mr.Modi decided to bring down so many temples in gujarat in the first place? He was a man with good progressive ideas and a man who does real good for the poor man.But all of a suddeen he has changed his path and fallen a prey to the fanatic ideals of some outfits.Mr.Modi be what you were,,you are a jewel to india.continue to demolish any religious structure bui8lt illegally on government land.

From Osama-bin-Laden to Gujarat-bin-VHP by DALEEP/FRANCE on 21 Nov 2008

Under the cover of religious sites some politicians and facist religious leaders are breaking each and every law of India. Not only they spread the seeds of hatred, but they are also trying to protect terrorists. It is really sad. In the name of God they like Osama-bin-laden are injecting all kind of rubbish to implement decent laws to protect the common person.

Hindu temple must not be sacrificial lamb by DILIP/FRANCE on 21 Nov 2008

There is lot of ignorance and misconception about Messianic Modi. Yobs who criticise him for the sake of political correctness, are extremely misguided and have lost the plot. There is a Chinese saying it matters little,if the cat is balck or white as long as the cat is able to catch the mice.Likewise Modi's exempleryrecord on state development and progress is next to none. There is no comparable right now in India, that is why Gujrat is the jewel in India's crwon making a contribution of 19% to GDP.The fact that the friuts of the social and economic dvelopments of Gujarat is beinged milked by all communities, that is valid proof of his credentials.Modi I am sure does not need any certificate from pseudo seculars. His works does the taking. Yes hindu temples must not be demolished will nilly, wherever practicable must be preserved.Hindu culture and heritage is not to undermined but must be cherished.

Stopping illegal demolitions by Jai Singh on 21 Nov 2008

Illegally occupying land for whatever purpose is a crime which should not be tolerated. It is a pity that Mr.Modi stopped further demolitions. Has his courage failed him or is scared to lose votes? One had more expectations from him.

modi is a killer!!!!! by Dravidian on 21 Nov 2008

Modi knows that he cannot win the coming elections without VHP and RSS support, then he and is entire family is only dancing in the hands of RSS. He cannot afford to loose RSS support so he stopped demolisation. Now where are modi supporter who were just praising for development two days back. Now shut the mouth and sit on your tail. Anyways modi can never become secular, coz RSS will never allow him to. The day modi became secular, he will not be any minister anymore. Anyways, even if modi's dog barks his supporter will have feel that congress has done something. Jai Hind

Dravidian reply by henna on 21 Nov 2008

Hi Dravidian,What does your statement mean? you mean in Karnatka and Tamil Nadu we can destroy likes of Meenakshi temple and other temples for development?Modi was stretching too much, ofcourse illegal structural is wrong but we have to see how much historical and important that is for preserving our own culture. I dont understand why first u listen that britisher historian who created this Aryan and dravidian divide. and even if that is true still Aryan-Dravidian have so much in common. People like you and thousand others who are so called hindus are really affecting our religion because of playing caste and reghion politics.

Psedu Seculerism by Hindu on 21 Nov 2008

If he had destroyed a church or a mosque, Sonia,Paswan,Laloo and the Congress party would have raised hell and the country would have seen a civil war!!! Nobody would have talked about developments!! Anti Hindus and a Sardarjee who sold out Sikhs is ruling the county.

Churhes to be removed. by Rajesh on 21 Nov 2008

Your comment is thoughtless. Churches built on legal lands are being burned by RSS. How will then Christians dare to build churhces on illegal land or on the roadsides?

psedu seculerism by kuldeep kamath on 21 Nov 2008

How can he destroy a Church or Mosque because they are built on legal lands. Because of Hindu majority, might becomes right and they put up temples on road side and some times on roads with total disregard to pedestrians.

Whai if.... by Swaminayaran on 21 Nov 2008

WHAT IF SINIA/PASWAN/LALU HAD DESTROYED THIS TEMPLES? WHAT WOULD MODI/SHP AND BJP HAD SAID/DONE MY FRIEND?

demolition of temples by k.madhukar on 21 Nov 2008

These roadside temples, mostly makeshift, are really commercial enterprises put up by street smart hoodlums exploiting fear of the unknown of average hindu . Many of them encroach on footpaths and hindrance to smooth traffic.no genuine hindu sentiments would be hurt if they are demolished in public good.Govt should go ahead with this good work.

Appeasement by Dravidian on 21 Nov 2008

Does our faith need violent defense? by Raj on 21 Nov 2008

Why do you suffer from such complex of fear and insecurity? Do you think Hinduism is so weak? Do you agree with RSS that Hinduism can be defended only with physical violence?
