Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Friday reiterated to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that stringent laws like POTA and Gujarat Control of Organised Crime (GUJCOC) will help ‘discourage educated youth’ from becoming criminals and terrorists.
At a meeting in New Delhi, Modi also briefed Manmohan Singh about the progress in the Ahmedabad blast case. He said the breakthrough achieved in solving the case may yield leads that could help in solving other terror cases across the country.
He also voiced concern over the fact that interrogation of the accused had revealed a pan-India programme of training and indoctrination of educated youth across the country. The meeting was also attended by National Security Advisor M K Narayanan.
Modi urged the Prime Minister to hold a meeting of chief ministers from the economically developed states, which have now come under the radar of terrorist attacks. He said that effective co-ordination between state and Central agencies is a must for curbing terrorism. He called for an immediate action plan under the Prime Minister's chairmanship in this regard.
He also asked the Prime Minister to accord coastal security topmost priority. He said the Indian Coast Guard and the Border Security Force must be equipped properly to patrol the shallow waters of the creek area along the Kutch border. He also highlighted the importance of police modernisation, adding that allocations for the same must be increased substantially.
Modi later met Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and discussed internal security issues.
