Bhandari recently wrote to GMADA Chief Administrator Vivek Partap Singh to review the policy and make changes in it to suit public interest.
Last year, GMADA had approved a policy allowing paying guest accommodation in residential areas on the Chandigarh pattern, against which the residents were up in arms.
After their repeated requests to the GMADA authorities failed to evoke any response, the Coordination Committee against paying guests in residential areas sent a representation to the Mohali DC seeking his intervention.
Even as GMADA has admitted on record that running such an accommodation is “commercial activity” (banned in allowed in residential areas), the practice thrives.
In a memorandum submitted to the GMADA CA, the residents had suggested that hostels for working men and women should be constructed to overcome the problem of accommodation faced by outstation students and employees.
On August 3, 2007, the GMADA Executive Committee had conditionally allowed paying guest accommodation in houses of eight marla and above. The policy, officials claimed, had made it clear that the building or house to be rented out is to be used for residential purposes only.
