Mumbai, January 2: Downplaying the shocking incident of two women in Juhu being molested by a mob of 70 people as a "minor issue", Police Commissioner D N Jadhav on Wednesday accused the media of making "mountain out of molehill."

"Such things can happen anywhere anytime. Here also where I am. Don't make mountain out of molehill," Yadav said responding to questions by the newsmen on the incident.

The two women were groped and molested by a mob of 70-80 people near a five-star hotel from where they were returning after the New Year celebrations early Tuesday.

"It (the molestation) is just an offence," Yadav said while appearing to target the media at the same time when he asked "Why are you blowing it out of proportion?"

Stating that no one has come forward to file a complaint, he said the police was registering a case on its own.

"I can't keep police behind every man," the Commissioner said, adding that the police were investigating the case.

The "UNFIT" officer by HAN on 02 Jan 2008

This police officer is totally UNFIT for this post, and he should immediately reconsider about his position in this vital public service.I am from UK, and have never heard any Statement by a responsible BRITISH Police Officer in my THIRTY FIVE YEARS of life in the UK. No wonder, why the JUDGES in the courts also treat as A MINOR case, in which innocent girls and women are EASILY raped in the cities and towns in India.About 58 years ago, I was taught in India, (in a Sanskrit Class) to fully respect women, because the DIVINE POWERS (GODS) always exist, wherever WOMEN are HONOURED or WORSHIPPED.In the case of this officer, I truly believe, the position of high responsibility has been profaned, and he should immediately resigned from this post.

My Brothers by Harinath.G on 02 Jan 2008

The persons who are all done this erotic thing the should be killed in middle of public in different types to teach other mens what will be the result. And main thing some womens and girls are likely going out with this type of persons for enjoyment, please be an INDIAN don't make these type things. If i found those type of persons i will kick them as i like.

Imported culture! by Krishan K on 02 Jan 2008

This is not our Hindu culture. When so called saviours of Hindu culture, including overzealous Shiv Sainik and VHP people will realise, that Hinduism is most open and free religion. This molestation and behaviour like this is result of suppressed se*uality and objectification of female which we have imported from middle east and also from British. When we return to our roots, we will see neither suppression, parda pratha, taboo nor sin ness and guilt association with sek*s, is Hindu. We must realise our true open Hindu culture and progress. Good example is South v/s north divide on this issue in India. Southern states are more free minded, and relaxed about women because they were less influenced and retained Hindu values more.

Mera Sar Sharam se Jhuk gaya by shurti on 02 Jan 2008

Useless by arbitary on 02 Jan 2008

If 50% of the Indian populations feels unsafe and insecure, the police commissioner had better take note of it. Molestation and eve-teasing is not a minor offense. It is psychologically damaging and traumatic for the women who suffer it everyday in the streets of Bombay and other places in India. Shame on this man for making this statement. Maybe he only responds when there are heinous crimes against women.

Molestation in Mumbai on new years eve by Chhattisgariya on 02 Jan 2008

Register a case against the Police Commissioner.

Shiv sainiks involvment by Soman Basu on 02 Jan 2008

such incidents are usual as Mumbai is full of shiv sainik goons. The government should open more prostitution dens in Mumbai this will be an source of income for the police.

This is what is called 'India shining'.

A sure indication of Indian society and law and order by Jay on 02 Jan 2008

Such incidents are nothing but a very small tip of the huge iceberg. Almost all women know how dangerous it is to travel in any public transport or walk in a crowded public places in any Indian cities, mainly in north India (including West Bengal and Maharastra). It’s a shame for Indian society and law and order situation. A closed and conservative and society where male-female ration is highly skewed cannot do any better.

Very safe hands by Siva on 02 Jan 2008

The officer should be given the highest honor for making such brave statement. We are very safe in the hands of such good police offices.

Molestation by Rajeshwari on 02 Jan 2008

What would be the reaction of Police Commisioner D N Jadhav if such a thing happened to his daughter or his wife, Will his comment still be...such things can happen anytime anywhere Don't make mountain out of molehill,". Such officers are a blot to our society.People look up police officers for protection, and I hope they keep up their reputation by not commenting so carelessly.

Molestation by Kumar on 02 Jan 2008

I am surprised to see such comments from a top cop. Instead of protecting the society they are justifying such incidents. I think he should be given a boot and stipped from police immediately. What would be his reaction if such thing had happened to his wife or daughter?

He is more fit for Baghdad! by Vinod Kulkarni on 02 Jan 2008

I would accepted his comments if it was Baghdad, Iraq. Can't accept it for Mumbai. He should be promoted and awarded with a foreign posting to Baghdad, Iraq. Let' have somebody who is more suited for Mumbai.

Molestation-Indian way of life?? by Venkat on 02 Jan 2008

This is nothing!! There was another news in that the two sons of Lallu were allegedly eve-teasing at several places, with a protection of Official-police escort!! This was ended when they (including the cop) were severely beaten by irate public. Now a case has been booke against the public!! This will happen ONLY in Bharat, where rape/molestation (remember Draupadi of maha Bharat?) are carried out with Police-assistance; and You are asking for Police protection!! Are you kidding! Are you out of your mind??? Mere Bharat Mahan! India is shining! We are the most civilised (??!!!) people on earth!!

deal with it !! by pp on 02 Jan 2008

The commissioner is either a nut or doesnt really give statements out accurately ... If the message goes out that this is a minor incident ... it only leaves room for more of these incidents ... make it a mountain now and deal with it ... or u will have a thousand molehills one in ur own home ...

EVE TEASING by NAGRAJ on 02 Jan 2008

BEAT THE POLICE FELLOW WITH CHAPPAL.IF IT HAD BEEN HIS WIFE OR DAUGHTER WHAT COULD THAT STUPID POLICE FELLOW COULD HAVE DONE. THE MAMOOL SEEKING COPS ARE ARE FIT ONLY TO SHINE THE SHOES OF VIPS.THE COMMISSIONER SHOULD SUSPEND SUCH IDIOTIC COPS.NO FILING IS NEEDED THEY ARE CATCHING FELLOWS FOR DRUNKEN DRIVING HAS ANY BODY FILES A COMPLAINT. THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO MAINTAIN LAW AND ORDER.

Media making issues ourt of non issues by Ajith on 02 Jan 2008

Police commissioner is right in saying that media is making mountain out of mole hill. With round the clock coverage meida are short of issues or they make issues out of non issues. The way TV channels like Aaj Tak or NDTV give importance for some issues is beyond any rhyme or reason and there motive is just to keep the viewers glued 24 hrs and increase their bargaining with commercial advt.Indian medias have totally immune to burning issues like poverty .suicide and other relevent social issues. In this case of molestation of two ladies it seems to be dubious as these ladies were loitering near the beach at odd time and that too with out any male accompaniment. The dressing also have become very provocative enticing people to make advances.

Who are these people? by krishan K on 02 Jan 2008

Before jumping on the bandwagon of all round condemnation, pause and think! Molestation of women at Kochi, Molestation of women at Bombay, Terrorist attack on CRPF, all happening on the same day. I s there a sign that some kind of people from outside and many from our own country are getting real UNEASY with Economic growth of India. These activities may be part of a heinous game plan to malign and dampen the spirit of uprising India. Police has to come out and give full details, what kind of people, what kind of mob it were.

its a minor issue by Mark on 02 Jan 2008

What a joke Molestation is a minor issue, burning churches and killing innocent christians is a minor issue,Raping Japanese tourists in Agra is a minor issue, human smuggling by an BJP MP is a minor issue, inmates fleeing from Bihar's jail is a minor issue, naxalites killing innocent people is a minor issue so what is a major issue for the police?

Is this India shining by Syed Zainulabedin on 02 Jan 2008

Is this India shining or India going back to uncivilised culture? The statement of police commissioner is highly objectable and supportive of culprits. India and Indian should rid off the Chalta hai culture or popular term. Shiv Sena and VHP who claimed to be Hindu parties and always forefront for the cause of Hindu culture should take serious note and focus on this problem instead of looting gift and cards shops who sell valentine day gifts and card. Indian police is world's 5 th most corrupt police and radical changes are needed to make the policing and fair system.

Then what is major by Sushil on 02 Jan 2008

If this is a minor issue, then what is major. Ya, if the incident had happened to his one of the family women, he would have considered major. If the chief is like this then what else you can expect from goons. Both are alike. I think punish him than the real culprits.
