Mumbai, January 2: Downplaying the shocking incident of two women in Juhu being molested by a mob of 70 people as a "minor issue", Police Commissioner D N Jadhav on Wednesday accused the media of making "mountain out of molehill."

"Such things can happen anywhere anytime. Here also where I am. Don't make mountain out of molehill," Yadav said responding to questions by the newsmen on the incident.

The two women were groped and molested by a mob of 70-80 people near a five-star hotel from where they were returning after the New Year celebrations early Tuesday.

"It (the molestation) is just an offence," Yadav said while appearing to target the media at the same time when he asked "Why are you blowing it out of proportion?"

Stating that no one has come forward to file a complaint, he said the police was registering a case on its own.

"I can't keep police behind every man," the Commissioner said, adding that the police were investigating the case.

I think he has a valid point by satty on 02 Jan 2008

I think he has a valid point here. Media as usual got a stick to beat the drum it does on most occasions, sometimes positive and sometime with negative results. Police is investigating the case so lets not declare Mumbai cops totally worthless just because this has happened. I believe the cops were more focused on terrorism related issues and I fully agree with him that there can not be a cop protecting every women in the city. Its we people as a citizens are to blame for this incident, because those who committed this were many of us only and I am very sure a lot of people would have just watched and enjoyed this incident rather than trying to protect the girls and prevent the incident.

Police comments outrageous by Ramesh Talwar on 02 Jan 2008

I am outraged with the comments of the Police Commisioner. A similar incident had happened in New York City sometime back in the midst of a festival. And it was a big issue with the media as it should be. But the police never construed this as a media vs police issue. The police never criticized the media for taking this up but went about doing their job of find the culprits which they did and they were punished. In fact, it was one of the issue where the police and the media , both and electric and print, took the issue up to find the culprits. I think media taking this issue up should be considered more for the public to introspect and analyze why such things happen in our society. It is only with society's awareness, participation and introspection that such crimes can be controlled. But the police, that too a police chief, to comment and analyze this issues on a public forum in such a callous, trivial and dismissive way is outrageous. Either he is over stressed and doesn't know how he should talk and behave from a public form or he doesn't understand the complexity of this problem. I shudder to think if that is how he analyzes other issues affecting our society. In either case,to me, he doesn't seem fit for the job.

Disgraceful act by Arundhati on 02 Jan 2008

It is really shameful that women get molested in presence of Police. What is surprising that two of the criminals can be easily identified and yet nothing seems to happen to them. Social boycot of these people and also their family may be one of the answer. What would these families done if it were their own daughter, wife or mother were the victim. It is also shameful that a high ranking officer from Mumbai Police has almost condoned this crime. Where do these Police Officers come from? I am sure they are not Maharashtrians.

what is wrong with Police stmnt by Nikhil on 02 Jan 2008

what is in this news to make headlines? you can argue about apathy, but is this incident shocking? where every minute 3 women are raped, this incident is really a minor issue. dont behave like naive citizens whose utopian bubbles are punctured by realities. And what are police paid to save your ungrateful asses from crime? From their perspective they are dealing with more serious things day in and day out than these foolish irresponsible girls. it is total drivel to expect every individual to be policed esp if the individuals are careless about their own safety and adamant at courting trouble.

Gundas by Guru on 02 Jan 2008

He doesn't need to keep police behind every man, ofcourse it shouldn't be the case in the future. To prevent he has bring every one of them who were involved in that act to be severly punished. No wonder, why people sometimes have more faith on Gundas

Shame by Guru on 02 Jan 2008

What would have been the reaction of Police department had the affected girls are related to them

No women should be subjected to such depravation. by DILIP /FRANCE on 02 Jan 2008

I leave in France and have just spend the New Year revelation, in major city, but have never encounterd mob hooliganism and gang molestation, even though the society is much freeer and comsumtion of alchaol is moderately liberal. The difference is that the Indian thugsget carried away any form of titilation and gets provoked,on consuming a drop of alcahol. They have no discipline and self restraint, the kind we see in France. These hooligans are good at apaing westerners, but is incapable of behaving like them. The Law Enforcement system has to be strengthened, to prevent such mob indecency. The commissoner needs to be detox as he seems to have taken leave of his sense, by waffling jibberish. He should quit if he is incapable to provide the protection the women deserve. No civilised society will put with such blatant dispaly of indignity and indecency.

security is in the question by ansarirehan on 02 Jan 2008

New Years' resolution...journalism with humanity.Molestation of women by the mob in Mumbai at midnight is disgraceful and not acceptable in our society. It also reflects that our police force are not sufficient or incapable to provide us with the security if the city is open the whole night as has been demanded by some media organisations recently. At the same time, hats off to the courageous photographers who called the police in time and save the victims. In this time of media explosion, journalists, photographers and cameramen work like a machine with no place for humanity in mind as was seen in a case where some cameramen and reporters were busy shooting the suicide of a protester live on camera and no one bother to save him. But the indecent photograph of one of the victim on the front pages is also faulty and should be condemn. police delays in registering the suo-moto case points to the right wing (sainiks) act. the culprits must be brought to justice.Lets our journalists make a resolution this year that they will act as human first.

shockingly pathetic by sangeetha on 02 Jan 2008

this is sad and sick, the police trying to treat it like having a walk by the beach. this act happen , but being a part of the law enforcement , such a casual attitude reflects the sad state of people in enforecement. moral police here will take the high grounds , who asked the women to venture at such late hrs. ultimately this gals are not getting the sympathy they deserve, and the police i feel is also taking a similar standing, and not taking it seriously. such pathetic thing to do.

Maligned Mumbai! by M V Chilukuri on 02 Jan 2008

I think Mumbai police have more serious problems than this but their reply shows lack of concern for public security. I wonder what the folks would have said if her daughter/wife gang raped on new year?Certainly, police should show more concern and action than media, but unfortunately, its exactly opposite! We have such a terrible system and society, that one needs to have security cover up for safety, rather than normal situation.Anyway, Mumbai is the dirties city in India in its cultural and moral values! Once, there was a rape in train on day light and everybody watched as if it bollywood masala, just imagine what of public live in Mumbai!!!

Enforce by Adarsh on 02 Jan 2008

Singapore is called a 'Fine' city - for every law you break, you need to pay a hefty fine...our governments should first of all pass these laws and enforce them strictly, only then we can say that we have developed.
