Hyderabad In a heart-rending incident, a young poverty-stricken single mother in Andhra Pradesh sold her newborn son to a childless couple for Rs 6,000 so that she could pay her medical bill in a government hospital.

"My financial position is really bad," a distraught looking Rajitha (20) who could not afford the Rs 2,000 hospital fee said from her bed at the Government area hospital in Kothagudem in Khammam district.

She delivered the baby by Caesarean section last week and the infant changed hands within 24 hours.

Police said they would take action against the hospital which also faces an inquiry whether its doctors took any money as bribe from the woman.

"Buying and selling a baby is an offence, so we will be booking cases," Kothagudem revenue division officer P Rajaram said.

According to reports, a rickshaw driver friend gave the single mother Rs 6,000 for the baby, which he planned to bring up with his wife. The couple have no children.

The incident occurred in the parliamentary constituency of Union Minister of State for Women and Child development Renuka Chowdhury.

"At least, she is safe and at least the child is not dead and not killed. I think they are the most important things that we need to look at," Chowdhury said.

The woman told the police who interrogated her that her husband had abandoned her and she had no means to support herself and a baby.

"We are also inquiring into the fact whether the doctor had asked for money (from the woman)," he added.

Welfare officials reportedly want the baby to be reunited with his mother so she can breastfeed him. They said the mother and child would then be shifted to a state-run facility where Rajitha can decide if she wants to put the baby up for adoption.

"PINK CHADDIS" and Renuka can you hear? by Ravi on 25 Feb 2009

When Renuka is devoting her full time for witch hunting SRI RAMA SENE and Muthalik, how can she get time for her constituency to look after the needs of poor. RENUKA should be tried for misusing and decimating the public office for ulterior motives and pleasing her CONGRESS BOSES. When Sri Rama Sene is fighting against PUB CULTURE this lady who support "PINK CHADDIS" free culture and pub culture vultures she has no time for women welfare and development

Respect for Women by Maliwan on 26 Feb 2009

Women have the same rights whether they are struggling to survive or whether they wish to drink in a pub. Respect all women, including Renuka.

Ravi Loves "PINK CHADDIS" by Neelam on 25 Feb 2009

Ravi, as always you are at your stupid best, a true mouthpiece of ram sene. All the thugs and goons of sene are proud of you. If you love "PINK CHADDIS" that much you should contact Mr Muthalik to take some home. Or you could also contact Renuka who would send you a personalized one for you to stuff your dirty mouth.

politics should change by ak on 25 Feb 2009

Somewhat off topic though, for those of you here who consider Renuka as a great woman, I belong to that same town as she (the same district where this incident happened) and she is like a lady goonda here. She hardly does anything for the constituency and she will only bark and take some bunch of rowdies and beat up some one when needed. That's her history in brief. BTW, I am not a supporter of Ram sene or BJP or congress. It is sad to hear this story but the problem lies with the people only. Unless people change and instead of selling their vote for money and liquor, if they vote for the right candidate (without any criminal background) who can work to eradicate poverty, and see that proper education and basic facilities are provided to the people in his constituency nothing will change. It may be Renuka's constituency today and it will be some other constituency tomorrow, it does not make any difference.

WHERE>? WHERE>? by KUMAR on 25 Feb 2009

Vote getting Politics by INPT on 25 Feb 2009

when poverty has gone to this level, the politicians running the states like Tamil Nadu use gimmicks like giving away colour TVs to everyone who holds a ration card. There are people who earn between Rs 5000 to Rs 10,000 a month and still hold ration cards and get free TVs and flood relief money. The financial management of out politicians is appalling, they have wrong priorities and vote getting gimmicks. Go around the public bus terminals and look at the condition of our toilets and washrooms. Please concentrate on basic hygiene and health instead of wasting tax payers' money on vote getting politics.

Renuka Chowdhury an Inter-National disgrace by Tarashankar Rudra on 25 Feb 2009

Renuka Chowdhury is a Inter-National disgrace and MUST be charged with TALIBANIZATION of Indian women. This is utter disrespect to ALL WOMEN in the world who have to sell their greatest love for money. When it comes from the constituency of a so called champion of womens right, it raises eye brow about the character of the MP itself.

Renukaji should act by R.Sajan on 25 Feb 2009

Renukaji must act immediately in the matter, with the same enthusiasm that she exhibited in the Mangalore Pub affair. She must demand the immediate recall of the MP from the area.

Mother sells baby. by Sukhi on 25 Feb 2009

Dear Renuka Chowdhry, dont hide behind the welfare of the child. The welfare of the child is with the mother.reform the system so that money does not force a mother to sell her child for essential services.

If it were Mahatma's India... by AshokSen on 25 Feb 2009

AP is ruled by Sonia Miano's Congress with Samuel Rajsekar Reddy as CM. The said incident happened in Renuka's constituency. Renuke is Minister of child/women welfare. So she is responsible along with AP congress Govt. But as long as incompetent opportunists like Renuka (was she not with TDP few years ago..) behave more as Minister of Pub Bharoa rather than minister of women/childwelfare such incidents keep happening. And we always have citizens like Nauntakee always blaming nationalists for all problems. I suspect for this guy, Prithivi Raj Chavan was a communal bigot and Jaysimha/Gazni, secular patriots! By the way, Jaysimha was the original secular politician of India! And of course foreign funded media, NGOs and ISI agents in India are always after nationalists! welcome to Nehru's India (not Mahatma's)! If it is Mahatma's then there will be no congress as it will be dissolved according to his wish, no religious conversions and of course no pub culture/alcoholism!

The question is what we do in this situation and not about pink chaddis!! by Keerthi Narayan on 24 Feb 2009

At first, if a mother can not take care of her child isit correct to impose the child on her? (this seems to be a genuine case)If some one would like to help sucha mother in need is it wrong to allow such a case?We agree making child and selling a child should not be a business. As we believe children should not become a product to be sold. But meanwhile for genuine cases, where a woman can not take care of herself is it correct to impose a child on her? If no is there a govt establishment which supports a child whcih can not be taken care by her mother. In this case it is clear that the mother has loved her child and she did not kill it as it was born. Ok it is bad that she has taken money when she gave her child away. But if she can not pay her hospital bills then what else she can do? Is it the hospital which set this deal in order to get its dues? I guess we need to see the situation with humanity.

Congratulations by Amit on 24 Feb 2009

Congratulations to the reporter for finding this story and pinning it on the Left/Communist government. This type of incident is a slap in the face for any left wing government claiming to represent the interests of the poor people. May I suggest you get Renuka's views as the Minister for Child Development on the plight of children with cleft lip as well. Why is the government neglecting to spend small amounts of money on the needs of children like Pinki who are otherwise dependent on the mercy of NGOs?

Mom sold her baby by Ameenullah,Keezhpally on 24 Feb 2009

It is not just the mistake of Ms Renukaji. The society, her neighbors, cultural activists and above all the administration of that hospital all of them are responsible for this sore happening. The real convict is the doctor who asked her bribe. We should know that ministers are not God. They cannot watch every people with just two eyes. She is an excellent minister. It is the problem of illiteracy .We should wake up and act against this kind of act and should engage to give much education to them . Governments and judiciary would take strong action against corruption. I have a request to the cultured Indians – please don’t play politics in this matter. We can work corporately to the upliftment of our society. Renukaji don’t mind the criticism of stupid people.

Ordinary people please excuse by RIP on 24 Feb 2009

Not surprised. It seems Renuka is only concerned about the enjoyment of "immoral upper class". How ever she has support of hidden feminists in TV channels( lately they are the people who control public opinion and there personal opinion is "opinion of India"). Obviously in return renuka has to support the "pleasurable night life" in the pub. Ordinary people please excuse. They should convert themselves to "open minded" or "progressive" and support pub going girl's fundamental right to get molested and get drugged in the darkness.Once in a while ordinary people are allowed to sell their baby to pay bills.

Renuka's Constituency by Varind on 24 Feb 2009

One good thing in Renuka Choudhry is that she likes reality whether it is a sale of a new born in her constituency for only Rs.6000/- or show of progressive India in Slum Dog. In either case she and UPA are happy, hell with poor.

Renula and Culture by Ramshesh on 24 Feb 2009

I have lived abroad for a very ling time, and I am shocked at the comments supporting anything in the name of liberty and freedom. Freedom does not mean one can do anything. And everyone knows about it. I thought that the pink chaddi episode was in a very bad taste, and in fact vulgar. Our people are simply following the wester culture, quite blindly. Restaurants have English songs - show me one non-indian restaurant in the west that plays indian classical music. Hep indians in cars blare English music. Show one western guy blaring indian music in his car. Anything Hindu or traditional is offensive. We worship English - not a single country - apart from England, Canada and the US use English on a regular basis. Most countries teach in their native languages and follow their own culture. For our people, doing anything the western way - especially the anwarranted things - has become fashionable. No wonder there has been some reaction within the country. It is a shame.

Rmshesh, English and Culture by Village Boy on 25 Feb 2009

Ramshesh, How are you any different from all other Indians you are complaining about, when you yourself used English to spew out your ignorance and foolishness. If you love your culture so much what made you go to those bad western countries? Hypocracy and ignorance of people like you is sickening. It is good that most Indians are not as stupid and backward in their thinking as you are.

Khamma issue by SV Sivasubrahmaniam on 24 Feb 2009

It is an uncommon phenomenon of our society, the exploitation of the poor and illiterate. I do not find any reason to bring Renuka in to the light unnecessarily. But as she is in power and incident happened to be in her own area, she should jump in to the scene and bring the culprit to book with in hours and show her integrity as a women’s lib leader. She can do. I have respect and belief on her. I appeal her to come down to Khammam and camp, irrespective of her schedule and swing in to action to get to bottom. No statements and speeches. HOPE SHE SWINGS IN TO ACTION and stays in Khammam till the END of the issue.

The reporter by sukh on 24 Feb 2009

By the report,It is simple case of adoption. In west or west created rule of the land may say "Sold" but if we know little bit of Indian society, It is simple case of adoption. This is one way to adopt a child. Now the news was reported to create sensation without any content, the reporter should be adopted by Kanke Mental Hospital. And IE should pay the fee.It is silly.

The 'pink chaddi' has given a big slap on the face of these Ravan Sene fanatics, and in return, they spew venom on Renuka because she correctly took a stand against this nincompoops.During elections, not only 'pink chaddi' but entire chaddi's of India would vote against the Ravan Sene like demon's.

ka's pudding and pink chaddis by Dr.G.Srinivasan on 25 Feb 2009

If anything like this goes on in any constituency the elected member becomes responsible. If this had happened in a BJP constituency the same people will not shirk to blame the MP.So Renuka should take a taste of her own pudding

mom sells baby to pay bribe by promod jain on 24 Feb 2009

How this matter has been linked to 'pink chaddi' or red chaddi Mr. Rajnath Kachra. If somebody sold her child to somebody, how does it get related to 'pink chaddi' you are referring to? Is it out of your frustration of stinking mindset Or should the readers understand that you are a 'Kachra" person mr. Rajnath Kachra???

Sale of a Baby by Ashok Mehdiratta on 24 Feb 2009

Heading of the news makes a mischievous reading.Reporter has deliberately brought in a factor " Renuka" to create sensation. Is Renuka responsible for stopping the bribe,What is the role of State Govt,What is health Ministry doing,Is IMA sleeping, DO WE AS A NATION HAVE NO RESPONSIBILITY.Rather than creating sensation and carrying out Stings, why does't the media, the Public and more importantly our own concious wake up.Rather than sputing vanom against Renuka,we need introspection.Get over this political score settling, and let us try to eradicate this disease.Just because Renuka advocated equal rights for women, she need be sanctioned for that,

As you sow, so you shall reap by KLD on 25 Feb 2009

If Renuka cannot be held responsible for this incident, similarly, BJP cannot be held responsible for the Mangalore incident caused by Rama Sene. The point is, instead of making stupid comments like "Pub Bharo", "Talibanization of Mangalore", etc, Renuka is better off concentraing on issues in her constituency and also in the rape-capital of the world, Delhi, which is a Congress state.

True development of society by Abhijit on 24 Feb 2009

Instead of blame game lets see how this case is investigated and corrective action are taken so that in our fast developing world our own economocally backward people are taken care. Regarding the pink chaddi comments, why are we sensationalizing it? Is it of that importance that we are ignoring the actual pain of our society. Lets do something together to make our society good for everyone irrespective of any religion, cast or gender. Through this I would like to tell our moral police(sena) that please guide our society in safe guarding our culture but not by beating or use of violance against our own sisters and daughters which portrays as if you are in race with Talibans in bringing restriction to our women folks freedom. Please find some decent way so that these young women of our society can be brought under our cultural fold and not threatened by Talibani dictats which is fast approaching our boundary.
