Hyderabad In a heart-rending incident, a young poverty-stricken single mother in Andhra Pradesh sold her newborn son to a childless couple for Rs 6,000 so that she could pay her medical bill in a government hospital.

"My financial position is really bad," a distraught looking Rajitha (20) who could not afford the Rs 2,000 hospital fee said from her bed at the Government area hospital in Kothagudem in Khammam district.

She delivered the baby by Caesarean section last week and the infant changed hands within 24 hours.

Police said they would take action against the hospital which also faces an inquiry whether its doctors took any money as bribe from the woman.

"Buying and selling a baby is an offence, so we will be booking cases," Kothagudem revenue division officer P Rajaram said.

According to reports, a rickshaw driver friend gave the single mother Rs 6,000 for the baby, which he planned to bring up with his wife. The couple have no children.

The incident occurred in the parliamentary constituency of Union Minister of State for Women and Child development Renuka Chowdhury.

"At least, she is safe and at least the child is not dead and not killed. I think they are the most important things that we need to look at," Chowdhury said.

The woman told the police who interrogated her that her husband had abandoned her and she had no means to support herself and a baby.

"We are also inquiring into the fact whether the doctor had asked for money (from the woman)," he added.

Welfare officials reportedly want the baby to be reunited with his mother so she can breastfeed him. They said the mother and child would then be shifted to a state-run facility where Rajitha can decide if she wants to put the baby up for adoption.

Pink chaddies are the solution, you stupid by B.V.SHENOY on 24 Feb 2009

Like Queen Mary Antoinette of France, Renuka says to the poor women of her constituency, "No food?, Go to a pub and drink to your glory. No clothes to wear? Approach the pink chaddi brigade which I have fostered, they will give you hundreds of chaddies. Why do you need a saree to cover your body? Pink chaddies are beautiful, they have won many international awards. See, I have a solution for all the problems of the poor women of our entire country; why talk about only my constituency, like the Talibani Sanghis, eh?

it is our fault by indian on 24 Feb 2009

The women should be helped, and the vhp tali's should be taught a lesson by Nautankee on 24 Feb 2009

The aim of the tali's is to stop women from progressing. The women in the taliland are kept captured in the kitchen for the rest of their lives. In India, we too have a similiar group whose aim is to take us back to stone ages instead of going further to modern ages with freedom for everyone. These guys have imposed themselves as if they are the rakhwalla's of our Hindu culture, and their idea is to impose taliland like laws on our sisters, mothers, wives, aunt's etc. so that they shoul not dance or enjoy their lives. Who the hell has given these jerks any right to impose such kinds of junglee laws on us? Do we moderns stop these rascals from sleeping with their wives= do we stop them from going to the toilet or eating food, the who the heck are these jerks to interfere in our private lives? Why don't the police and the courts take these kinds of junglee animal likes to task? , In a very tragic event, a women has sold her child for Rs.6000, but instead of helping this women....

Renuka owes an explanation to the nation by Indiboy on 24 Feb 2009

Renuka Ji gave a clarion call for Indian women to go to pubs, may be she thought she was talking about the real women of India. But, she was mistaken. She represented the mind of a handful women but ignored the real suffereings of the women. Now opposing the pub attackers is a different issue, which me and you every one can oppose, but then making it the only problem of Indian women was what Renuka Ji did. Now if attacking a women in pub is crime, then what it is to let a mother sell her child because of poverty. This is criminal negligence and the Minister must answer the nation because the mother happens to be from the constituency of the Minister.

pathatic thy name i bjp... by Nautankee on 24 Feb 2009

On top of a tragic event, the tali like followers of the religious police are giving so pathatic comments. This shows the downgraded mentality of Ravan Sene. Their own aim is to behavi like Ravan, but they want their wife, sisters or mothers to behave like Sita. Pathatic thy name is VHP, Ravan Sene or Bajrag dal and even Al-Qaida.

PET BHARO ANDOLAAN by SANJAY BANSAL on 24 Feb 2009

Single Mom Sells Child in Renuka's Taliban by Sanjana on 24 Feb 2009

It can only happen in Renukan's Talibanised Contituency where she encourages Women to be single mothers and sale of children. Probably she forgot to give her condoms. And Judges still will give custody of the child only to a mother!!

Poor women sell baby in Andhra by Aravind on 24 Feb 2009

Pub culture could produce more such children in another way ! so it does not help Social welfare, or rather destroy it. Moreover, why did this poor women not get any support? Hopefully the Minister will have some positive comments and action at least for this matter; let us all wait.

Pub campaigner by varun on 24 Feb 2009

Long live pink chaddis and pub campaigner for the support of selling babies..I think more than her work she does all other work perfectly.. I think interms of minister, she is doing good business in her constituency...

Renuka's support for pink chaddi leads to... by Indian on 24 Feb 2009

Renuka is busy campaigning for pink chaddis.. she has forgotten she is a minister for welfare of poor people like this Andhra woman.. Renuka, will you forget your pink chaddi and pub fascination for some time and do your job? Or, get out of the way, so that parties who are bothered about Indian culture, rather than pub and pink chaddi culture can take over...

HAATHI KE DAANT KHANE KE AUR, DIKHANE KE AUR by Anil Kumar on 24 Feb 2009

This all is happening because we are copying Western culture for every thing. If I am not mistaken Hospitals are free for Poor, so why the bill. This is shame that economically we may have made a little head way but Culturally we are going backwards. If this trend continues, soon we will be a broken nation too. Renuka, see what is happening right under your nose, or may be you know how to play politics only. May God Bless India ! !

pathetic by kiran on 24 Feb 2009

What has the pink chaddi brigade to say to this? Nothing , only hide in shame behind their pink chaddis perhaps

Renuka first do your minimal duties by Rags on 24 Feb 2009

Renuka first do your minimal duties, it is fate of this country that your kind of people are holding such roles at national level. A woman who is not taking care of her house, how she can take care of nation. Shame on this.

Renuka Ji- Isn't it Africanisation of Andhra Pradesh- Learn from Modi by SP on 24 Feb 2009

This incident of Andhra Pradesh will even put the poor African nations to shame. Since this has happened in the Constituency of Renuka Ji, she has to answer the nation as to what is her Model of development?? If she is bent on making A.P another Africa then its fine but if she is interested she should visit Gujarat to understand the Gujarat model.
