New Delhi, January 22: The Government will not fund religious instruction like Quranic interpretation and Islamic law at madarsas(religious schools) but financially support regular subjects like maths and science that may soon be taught there as part of its modernisation process.

The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development will link madarsas with the National Institute of Open School and introduce Mathematics, Social Sciences, Hindi, English and other regular subjects as part of the modernisation process of the religious schools.

"As a part of the modernisation process, it is certain that we would introduce additional subjects like Maths, Science, Social Sciences, English and Hindi at all the madarasas and maktubs. A regular curriculum of a madarsa and maktub includes courses in Arabic, Tafsir(Quranic interpretation), Shariah (Islamic law), Hadith (recorded sayings and deeds of Prophet Mohammad), Mantiq (logic), and Muslim History. Government will not fund these subjects," a senior HRD Ministry official said.

Depending on the educational demands, some madarsas also offer advanced courses in Arabic literature, English and other foreign languages, as well as science and world history.

People of all ages attend madarsas and many often become Imams. The education of an 'alim' (religious teacher) requires approximately 12 years of study.

Evening classes are also held in madarsas and many of them also have dormitories.

There are demands to treat madarsa degrees at par with those of public schools.

"The HRD Ministry had discussions with religious teachers and institutions associated with the madarsas. The Ministry made it clear to them that to put their degrees at par with public school certificates, assessment is required. And the students have to study additional subjects to make their degrees valid as per rules," highly placed sources said.

The course will incorporate standard content that is being offered by the NIOS.

"The students will also have to appear for examinations in all these additional modern subjects that would soon be taught," sources confirmed.

The examinations will be conducted by NIOS.

"We are working on the modalities of setting up the rules for taking exams. It could be similar to what NIOS is offering right now to students and could also be something different. The Ministry is still working on these things," a senior HRD Ministry official said.

French President by Kaushik Bhagowati on 25 Jan 2008

Dear Sir, mixing up of the private life and professional life of a celebrity is a chronic disease of media. Each and every article in the news today, regarding the French President, starts with name of Carla Bruni, no matter how important the issue follows it. The French man who came to India is the President of the nation, and he is not here for any holidays. So, media, PLEASE concentrate on the President and not on the man called Nicklos Sarkozy, at least while discussing some very important issues of national interest. Thank you.

This is the most unseclular thing to say by Hindoosthani comnunal government. Maths was started by comnunal Hindoos in Vedic time and they invented 0 without taking any blessing of Alla or Mahoomet. By teaching Math or Vedic Math in madarsas they are trying to pollute the mind of seclular and progressib minroty comnunity of Muslim with non Issslamic ideas. Shame on comnunal Hindoosthan.

Stop the Al-Qaida by "Nautankee" on 23 Jan 2008

The government has taken the right decision by not funding madrassas, because the experiance in Afganistan and Pakistan has shown that these are the places which breed extremism.Madrassas and Shakhas are the places in which extremism flourish.

Madarasas must be banned immediately since it is proven time and again across the world that such organizations breading only terrorism and hatred. It is the time for Indians wakeup, else soon Indians lose respect in west as happened to Pakistanis now. Decent Indians will never compromise on this issue.

Funding of Madaarasas by MOHAN DADDIKAR on 23 Jan 2008

The next step of the UPA Govt. to please the Muslims will be to award a cash prize of Rs. 100,000/- for each Hindu who gets himself converted to Islam. I am sure if the Hindus do not wake up and stop elelcting the Congress and the leftists, by the end of this century, India will be apart of Pakistan, the dream of all the Muslims who have not migrataed to Pakistan in 1947 after its creation. The greatest tragedy is that Hindus have not yet recovered from the mental paralysis they have suffered during the long rule of Muslim rulers for almost seven centuries.

Madrasa by Patel M. D. on 23 Jan 2008

There are two reasons for having misunderstandings about madrasas- 1: They are blind people (don't WANT to see the truth) . 2: They simply don't know the truth. Whatever media says they take it... If somebody wants to know the truth 'open hearted they should spend some time in madrasas physically.

India_Securely_Muslim_Country by sreeram_srinivas on 23 Jan 2008

It is disgusting to hear that govt does not have money for existing IIT's, then declared some 7 new IIT's, do not know from where the funds would come, so about faculty. Existing govt. schools or municipal school conditions are too well known to be written here. But we have money to fund the Madrassas

Govt funds for Islamic schools by megh on 23 Jan 2008

This is a good move by the government to use public funds for meaningful purpose. Muslims need to realise the greatness of islam will not be sustained by violence and jihad against human beings. Islam needs to wage a jihad against illeteracy, and inequality of gender in the islamic society so that people evolve as individuals who are prodcutive and educated to add value tothe economy.

Say NO to religious brainwashing by Paramjit Bahia on 23 Jan 2008

I have never believed in flying pigs and am not likely to believe in the plausible statements of government’s HRD. This is all a cover story for financing Madrasas through back door. These places are well known for creating Islamic Fanatics and poisoning minds of the followers of Islam against others. People behind this scheme are only throwing public funds in the laps of Fundamentalists for appeasement, with the hope of building Vote Banks. All this talk of money to be spent on teaching certain subjects only is just another sugar quoted lie, like when crooked politicians tell us at election time how honest they will be and how keen they are to serve the people. Just like our current President. If our political class is really serious about eradicating extremism, they should ban religious schools and leave it to parents themselves to teach their faith to their children if they so wish. Religion is one of the main causes of Indian problems, it cut our nation into bits in 1947, high time we realised that and stopped playing with snakes.

If you want to study go to a School. by Gopinath on 23 Jan 2008

Its absolutely nonsense providing our hard earned tax dollars to Madarasas? If they want to study anything other than religion, why not they go to regular schools, which are created exactly for that purpose. The experience with these Madarasas, does not give anyone any confidence, that they will be using these funds for the right purpose. This is another example, why the politicians stoop to a level, to get votes. This is definitely not a way for us to demonstrate our secular nature. What will be government response, if a Vedic institute comes asking for money?

Education to build a nation by Som Karamchetty, PHD on 23 Jan 2008

Most rational people will realize that there are schools that teach religion and others that teach Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and other arts and commerce subjects so that their graduates contribute to nation building. Graduates of religious schools are likely to become religious leaders, such as priests and mullahs. The number of schools and the number of graduates will depend on the expected demand for them. Just as you do not provide for a million aeronautical engineers, you do not also provide for millions of graduates in religion. Then, there are schools owned and managed by various religious institutions and independent owner managers including the governments. It is best for governments in India to leave the religious education to the religious institutions and their leaders. The government should focus on education for those who want to build the nation. Standard education should take five days and the sixth and seventh days should be left to parental discretion. Students, in general, may opt to get a small dose of education in religion, culture, fitness, sports and athletics on those two days, if they wish to at their own expense. There is definitely a small demand (even from the CIA) for graduates proficient in Arabic languages but the supply has to be in proportion to the anticipated demand and it need not come from any specific group.

Love and knowledge superior to hatred and darkness of mind. by jubban on 23 Jan 2008

If muslims residing in India, have to me made proud of themselves, they need help to get out of ancient mindset which is the cause of their backwardness (despite that they originated from native people after coversion), and terrorism in our country and neighborhood. One simple solution is opening the mind to knowledge. The benefit will be obvious, more jobs and recognition to those who have been disadvantaged for generations. Parents who are muslims will need to define the objectives for their children, rather than let it be dictated by age old system of madrasas who are very slow to modernise. We must remember that an illuminated mind on the path of logic would always bring happiness to one's own family and society as a whole.

religion should not be based on anything. by h on 22 Jan 2008

We should not fund places where they teach killings of innocent people. They ashould be all banned along with anyother religious teaching places. They should build real schools in those places. While they are at it, they should also destroy all the stupid temples that has been sprouting out all over the place for gods that do not exists and build more schools.

islamic education by aliabbas on 22 Jan 2008

i think its not a good move but, as a muslim i think that sending any child to madrasas to become imam is totally a wish of the childs parents

fund one, fund all ! by vijay on 22 Jan 2008

On similar lines, the government should also start funding gurudwaras, mathas, agyaris, convents and so on.Funding the demigod places of adivasis would also be considered. It will help the governments survive for a long time.

money for religious studies by srini on 22 Jan 2008

It is strange that this was not realised for more than six decades. What about the money spent so far? Is it a colossal waste? Why hindus were deprived of learning sanskrit for decades? I would have learnt that sacred language if i had the support of govt.
