Ludhiana, March 10 While eight new cases of jaundice have been reported from Kot Mangal Singh locality, new cases have also surfaced in other parts of the city.

Over a dozen cases of jaundice and 30 mild cases of diarrhea have been reported from Mayapuri. The Health department today conducted a door-to-door survey in these areas and also kheld a medical camp.

Meanwhile, the Health department officials said there is no need to panic as the situation was under control. No serious case has been reported as yet, a Health department official said.

The residents of the area complained the Municipal Corporation had not been able to provide potable water to households. They rued that it was only due to contaminated water supply that more and more people were falling sick in the area.

District Health Officer Dr SS Dhir said as many as 1,834 houses were covered during the field survey conducted by Dr Kheema Sethi and Dr Renu Beri at Shimlapuri and Janta Nagar and by Dr Puneet Juneja and Dr Amita Jain at Mayapuri.

“We also conducted field visits to Shimlapuri and Janta Nagar, which are also prone to such diseases in the wake of poor hygienic lifestyles in these localities. We have advised the residents to boil water before consuming,” Dr Dhir said.

On the other hand, Operations and Maitenance (O&M) Cell of the Municipal Corporation checked the areas falling in the Kot Managal Singh locality and found three leakage points that could have led to contamination of water.

“We have found three illegal connections that must have caused the contamination of water,” said Daljit Singh Malhotra, superintending engineer of O&M cell.
