Mumbai, February 17: With the arrest of a Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist from Uttar Pradesh who had done a recce of a dozen sensitive targets in the city, the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad fears three or more terror modules could be operating in the financial capital here and newer strategies will have to be devised for busting them.

"Considering the population of the city and the anonymity that various pockets offer, we feel there will be at least three to four more sleeper cells operational here though it is an analytical guess," a senior ATS officer told PTI.

Greater stress will be laid on strengthening the network of informants to get more leads so that the modules are busted in Mumbai which has been hit many times by the terrorists, including the serial train blasts in July 2006 which resulted in the deaths of 187 people, the officer, who did not wish to be named, said.

Fahim Arshad Ansari (35), born and bought up in Mumbai, was arrested by the UP Special Task Force along with seven other Lashkar men. During interrogation, they revealed that they planned to carry out strikes in the city.

Ansari, who received training at LeT camps in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir, had started ground work in the run up to a terror strike in the city. He had rented a house in the city's red light district and was searching for one more flat.

"He had also surveyed possible targets and I think he was entrusted with the logistical support being a local. Once the two hideouts were in place, more terrorists would have moved into them and following which a delivery of the explosives would have taken place," said the officer.

Free Service to Terrorists by Shaji on 18 Feb 2008

While our govt. claim its success in GDP growth rate, urban development, IT etc. they forgot to do certain basic things, for example the very need of a National Identity Card to all Indian Citizens. It is quite surprised to note, why our govt. kept it in waste-bin, may be the reason that more

Bigger Picture by ashutosh mishra on 18 Feb 2008

The larger picture needs be seen. The polity in India is affected by Islamic Pakistan and currently Islam is facing need to re-invent itself. The illiterate besides the religiously literate are desperately responding to West induced globalisation, middle class muslims like Syed Zainulabedin are undestandably hurt at portrayal of muslims as fanatic, which probably could be justified. Now-a-days even the Pakistanis are realising their folly of having pursued a negative agenda all along. The sole Hindu terror group is LTTE but that is more a ethnic divide fighting for attainment of secular objective than religious Hindu versus Buddhist.Thanks.

Missing the woods for the trees ! by Sharad C. Misra on 18 Feb 2008

It is good that the LeT man has been arrested and his interrogation has revealed leads to access and apprehend other sleeper cells. But all this amounts to missing the woods for the trees. More important is to know what motivates these people to resort to terrorism and risk their own lives. Surely, it must not be the lure of money since nothing is more precious to a person that his own life. It would appear that terrorism is motivated by Islam in the sense that by killing idolaters and non-believers the killers would be propitiating Allah for which they would be rewarded with passage to paradise where life is an eternal bliss. The other motivation could be to establish a global caliphate the sample of which we have seen in Afghanistan under Taliban's rule which has no room for any other religion. Therefore, terrorism can not be countered merely by destroying the modules. What is needed is to counter religious fundamentalism and wean the Muslim youngsters away from institutions which brain-wash them. And the only way is to modernize madarsa education and induce these misguided youth to join the mainstream of liberal education

Domestic Terrorism by Venkat on 18 Feb 2008

Syed brother don't feel bad. People will always take a Muslim commenting about terrorism as hypocrite. I partially agree with you that India has its own version of terrorists. But the scale of these terrorists is very small compared to Muslim terrorism. Also, so much money and energy is spent on countering Muslim Terrorism that it doesn't leave much to focus on our own terrorists. Yes I agree with you that they do exist and should be curbed the same way. ANY KIND OF TERRORISM IS BAD. And whoever practices it, irrespective of religion, deserves the same punishment. Much of the Nexal terrorism is supported by the communists snakes in India, and also by China. Problem is people can't distinguish between Socialism and Communism. There is some socialism in many European countries, but they do not tolerate communists. Communist parties should never have been authorized to exist in India. But our early leaders were very short-sighted.

Seal our borders by Sunil on 17 Feb 2008

India should build a high-tech fence along the Pakistan and Bangladesh Border. US is going to do the same along the Mexican border. Indian economy is quite strong right now and Foreign reserves are plenty. Build a PARALLEL FENCE along the border and the area between them as NO-MANS-LAND. Deploy Infra-Red cameras (pretty cheap these days) to monitor the no-mans-land and air/land forces to shoot down anyone in the no-mans-land. All it needs is the will of the govt.

My view by Venkat on 17 Feb 2008

wow! Hindu terror modules? Where did that come from? Where as Islamic terrorists do things in the name of Islam, for Islam, naxalites don't do it for Hinduism. They are anti-Hindu and claim to work for weaker sections. There is no Hinduism involved in their terrorist activities. See, Mr. Syed, going to regular schools has it's advantages unlike madrassas. We believe in rational thinking and clarity of thought. You lack that.

What about domestic terrorism by Syed Zainulabedin on 17 Feb 2008

What about the Hindu terror modules who had killed 15 people in orissa yesterday. These Naxalites have paralyise the normal life with thier terror tactics in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Jharkand, Maharashtra and West Bengal. Hindu terrors modules in Assam, Nagaland and Tirupura. Sikh terrorism in Punjab. I don't understand why our government failed to control the domestic terrorism at the first place.
