According to the Department of Homeland Security the latest statistics on ‘illegal immigrants’ shows that in 2007 the estimated population of Indians living illegally in the United States was 220,000 compared to 120,000 in the year 2000, thus recording one of the highest percentage increase.
An estimated 11.8 million unauthorized immigrants were living in America in January 2007 compared to 8.5 million in 2000. The unauthorized population increased by 3.3 million between 2000 and 2007 while the annual average increase during this period was 470,000.
Nearly 4.2 million (35 per cent) of the total 11.8 million unauthorized residents in 2007 had entered in 2000 or later. An estimated 7.0 million (59 per cent) were from Mexico.
California remained the leading state of residence for the illegal population in 2007 with 2.8 million, followed by Texas with 1.7 million and then Florida with nearly 1 million.
The DHS statistics show that Californias share of the national total declined from 30 per cent in 2000 to 24 per cent in 2007 but the greatest percentage increases of unauthorized resident population occurred in Georgia with 120 per cent, in Arizona, which was at 62 per cent and in Texas with 57 per cent.

The boys from places like Jalaldhar, Amritsar and Bhatinda are destroying the good name of other wise hardworking, diligent and intelligent indians by driving taxis with faulty meters, being involved in dubious and shady business... they should be banned from leaving india . they are a disgrace on the rest of us.
I am one of these Indians. I am doing good. Supporting my family. Enjoying a good life and terribly missing my motherland. In the end I would have paid a big cost for my 'freedom'. There are lots of poor folks like us who would not have been able to support their families but for the long hours they put in. I know this is not a good advertisement for India and her going strength and opportunities she provides. So, I do apologize for being illegally here. But in all honest, even in this environment of recession, there are lots of business opportunities here.I do wish, sometimes, that I had not come. It is too late now.
The republican economists encourage illegal immigration because the USA population would not be growing without it. It was part of the Bush plan to grow the US economy. Like most Bush policies, it hasn't worked the way he had hoped.
Mainly some specific communities from India have this tendency to come and stay on in USA by whatever means necessary. Guajaratis in general and Patel community in particular will top the list. More surprisingly majority of them are affluent people in India and they link US citizenship or green card, even US-EU visa is a matter of social prestige and pride. Their distorted view about the world and lack of self-respect and utter absence of any sense of patriotism (either to India or USA) is a disgrace for all Indians, in India or abroad.
