Ahmedabad, July 18 The police opened fire and lobbed dozens of teargas shells to control arson and violence on Friday after armed devotees of the Asaram Bapu Ashram attacked protestors demanding a fair probe into the death of two young boys at the Ashram, earlier this month.

The Ahmedabad Bandh coincided with the Guru Purnima celebrations organised by the Ashram.

The injured include mediapersons covering the Guru Purnima celebrations at the Ashram in Motera village and several men and women who were on a protest march to the premises demanding justice over the deaths. About 40 cars and other vehicles were burnt to cinders, though the police say they have accounted for only eight.

Significantly, the Ashram did not send out a single appeal to stop its marauding devotees, all through the day.

The police initially chose to do nothing while the devotees armed with swords, lathis and even firearms, went berserk. Later they fired in the air and lobbed more than three dozen teargas shells when the protestors rallied to take on the attackers in a hand to hand fight.

Angry locals soon converged into mobs prowling the Sabarmati area and other city locations pelting stones, setting vehicles afire and mounting retaliatory attacks.

The mayhem began at about 11 am with a 2,000-strong mob of Ashram inmates coming out of the Ashram premises in trucks and on feet, attacking locals who had gathered to protest nearby.

The devotees also resorted to heavy stone pelting at the gathering, and one of those injured early on was Gandhinagar Superintendent of Police Piyush Patel.

The initial attack by the Ashram devotees saw the protestors flee for their lives. The fleeing crowd was pursued and the stragglers were brought down with lathi blows. The devotees also broke into the nearby housing societies on the trail of those who had ran into them, ransacking and damaging property, even the parked vehicles.

Though locals soon rallied to put up a resistance to the devotees, they were badly outnumbered in many places. The attack lasted well over half an hour, with the police displaying no more than a pedestrian interest. This was while the attackers left behind a trail of injured people, including a woman reporter of a national news channel.

"The Ashram vasis (inmates) just barged in and damaged at least 20 vehicles parked in our society,'' said Rajesh Kumar, a resident of the Stadium Villa Bungalows in the area.

Soon, local people began collecting in large numbers, targeting Ashram devotees on their way to take part in the Guru Purnima celebrations at its premises. The Sabarmati Chowk near the Sabarmati Bus Stop bore the look of a mini-battleground with angry mobs pelting stones throughout the day, and several dozen vehicles burning on the roadside

The Joint Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad, Mohan Jha refused to comment on the police role in the violence. DIG J K Bhatt said the situation has been brought under control. He said the police have arrested "10 to 15 people from the spot." Ashram Administrator Uday Sangani was unavailable for comment.

Friday's events were a fallout of the death of two young boys, Dipesh and Abhishek Vaghela from the Nirnay Nagar area of Ahmedabad, who were found dead in the Sabarmati riverbed on July 5 after they went missing from the Ashram-run gurukul two days earlier on July 3. Their parents allege that the two were killed as part of some 'black magic' ritual by the Ashram authorities.

asaram by Dr. Raju on 10 Aug 2008

he has no human emotions and makes his people as same, he uses our hindusim for his greed. He has no emotions for people killed and people crying. He tries to distort any news which exposes his criminal activities. Media is not allowed to inside the ashram. Young people are holded as hostages inside the ashram and are not let go to their homes. They are mentally trained for hours that your life is to serve asaram. this is the same brainwashing tactic used by terrorist organizations in the name of their god. asaram is nothing more than madari wala who collects people with his gimmicks.

All that is happening is a conspiracy against Bapuji and ashram. Some people or group wants to bring bad name to Bapujis Ashram but they will not be successful in doing so because all the sadhaks and sadhikas of Bapuji know him very well.It was said that reporters were attacked by Bapus followers and were saying that only the positive thing about ashram should come in front of media and the public not negative. This stament itself clearly shows that they were not Bapu's followers but some other people. There is nothing negative in our Gurudev's Ashram.I request people to come and visit once the poonam darshan or shivar at any place may it be ahmedabad or surat. Then you will come to know that when lakhs of people assemble for darshan not even a single mishappening happens then how can this take place in ashram. What ever is happening it is only and only to bring down the image of Bapuji.I request the officials and the reporters to bring the truth in front of people and should stop assuming

Unbiased and baseless report on Asa Ram Ji and Asharm activites by dr. manasi anand on 22 Jul 2008

IT IS SURPRISING THAT PEOPLE ARE WRITING ABOUT THE MISSION AND ACTIVITIES OF ASHRAM WITHOUT LOOKING INTO THE FACTS. IT SEEMS BLIND PEOPLE FROM THE MEDIA ARE SHOWING THE WAY TO BLIND PEOPLE OF THE SOCIETY WHO JUST CRITICIZE FOR THE SAKE OF IT. REMEMBER WHAT WILL YOU SOW WILL YOU REAP AND REAP IT SOON. IF SO MANY BAD THINGS ARE HAPPENNING IN THE ASHRAM THEN WHY THE GOVERNMENT, CBI, INTERPOL AND SO CALLED MEDIA DIDNOT WRITE ABOUT THE BAD THINGS ABOUT THE ASHRAM THAT HAS MORE THAN 250 ASHRAMS, 2000 SAMITIS, 15000 CHILD DEVLPMENT CENTRES, SO MANY DOCTORS, ENGINEERS, SCIENTISTS AND SCHOLARS WORK FOR ASHRAM AND WILLING TO SACRIFICE THEIR LIVES FOR BAPUJI. GO AND FIND OUT YOURSELF. WE ARE INTELLIGENT ENOUGH NOT TO GET CARRIED AWAY BY SELFISH, MISINFORMED AND INCREDIBLY STUPID MEDIA. WE KNOW THEIR MALAFIDE INTENTIONS ARE MORE DANGEROUS THAN TERRORISTS AND STILL SLAVES OF COLONIAL SYSTEM. THESE SAME MEDIA HEADS ARE ALWAYS SEND REQUESTS FOR INTERVIEW WITH BAPUJI. DR. irresponsible media by Sudhakar on 19 Jul 2008

Aaj Tak/Star News/…Breaking new: Amitab bachan ko jukhamBreaking news: A girl eloped with her teacherBreaking news: A lover hanged himself after killing his own loveBreaking news: Father arrested for honor killingBreaking news: …Why our media has such a negative outlook? Why can’t they see good things around. Pick any newspaper, front page will be full of sad, gloomy, pessimistic, provoking and negative news – murder, deception, rape, treachery, war, blast. When something good happens or somebody does something work for humanity then media becomes blind. Why? Because that’s not sellable. For publicity they can do anything – put some more spice to turn a simple news into breaking news. I am not biased or in favor of injustice; If something wrong happened with those kids then that should come in the front of everyone. But just for the sake of publicity, media should also not try to give a new twist to everything. Show news but don’t make news.

MEDIA PERSONNEL ARE DOING THEIR JOBS WITH RESPONSIBILITY: NO ONE CAN OR SHOULD TURN A BLIND EYE TO THESE DASTARDLY ACTS BY THESE ASHRAM SADHUS by SUBHASH SAMPAT on 19 Jul 2008

Sudhakar, It is my contention that you probably belong to the criminal fraternity. You must be a supporter of this God damned sadhu and an accomplice in the murder of these two innocent souls for finding the mole in the eyes of the media while not uttering a word against this dastardly deeds of these criminals. Any discussion on police, policing, law and order and the work of the press and the electronics media should begin with an understanding of the environment the journalists work in. The media personnel are knowledgeable and responsible citizens of this country who represent the views of the cross section of the public and keep the public informed of things as they happen. The media fraternity has always endeavoured to be a well-informed voice of the nation on all matters. It should be pleasing to everyone that it is more and more being seen as legitimate participants in the affairs of the nation, exposing the corrupt and the criminals and espousing causes that they and the people find dear. I have been fortunate to be part of this very endearing fraternity and many significant international academic forums for the past four decades and I strongly believe practitioners, academics and the public benefit from the resultant exchange of information, views and ideas presented by the media.

RUMPUS THAT THIS GOONDA SADHU CREATED AT AHMEDABAD AIRPORT TWO YEARS AGO by CHANDRA SWAMI on 19 Jul 2008

Asaram Bapu and his stupid followers think of this another Chandra Swami as a god so this crook phones up his goondas to gather his brainwashed innocent followers to attack the employees of Jet Airways at Ahmedabad airport (August 2006). His followers shouted slogans against the airliner for frisking him as part of their security check before allowing him to board a Delhi-bound aircraft at Ahmedabad. The followers were angry to know that this Nasharam Pappu was frisked twice at the Ahmedabad airport before being allowed to embark on the Delhi-bound Jet Airways flight. The 'Arrivals' lounge at Ahmedabad airport witnessed some noisy scenes with his followers shouting slogans against the airliner. That mess lasted 4 hours.

A CALL FOR A SPECIAL MINISTRY TO SAFEGUARD THE WELL-BEING OF CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE by SUBHASH SAMPAT on 19 Jul 2008

It is time for both the Central and State Governments to create a special portfolio of The Office of the Minister for Children (OMC) which would be fully committed to safeguarding the well-being of all children and young people. This ministry should be committed to promoting the rights of the child, including the participation of children and young people in matters that affect them. It should also be the responsibility of this ministry to formulate the State or National Children’s Strategy with responsibility for driving and monitoring the implementation of this strategy. This ministry should be committed to promoting and facilitating the full participation of children and young people in its work. The ministry should aim to create a safe and healthy environment for the young people wherever they go to participate and should be committed at all times to ensuring their safety and welfare.

URGENT NEED FOR CHILD PROTECTION POLICY AND CODE OF BEHAVIOUR FOR WORKING WITH CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE by SUBHASH SAMPAT on 19 Jul 2008

A set of child protection guidelines should be introduced by the State and national governments, based on Children First – National Guidelines for the Protection and Welfare of Children and Our Duty to Care – The Principles of Good Practice for the Protection of Children and Young People as issued by the government in the United Kingdom. In accordance with these documents, it is good practice for all organisations that have contact with children and young people to introduce a child protection policy. This policy should help to provide safeguards and support for staff when they are working with children and young people.
