Kolkata, May 17 A 61-year-old woman and her 31-year-old son allegedly committed suicide by hanging themselves from the ceiling of their homes in Payamanti Housing Complex in the Kasba area on Saturday morning.

According to the police, when A K Basu (65) returned after getting milk from a nearby Mother Dairy outlet around 6 am, he first found his wife Asha hanging from the ceiling of the dining room. He then rushed to his son’s room for help where he found Anirban dead. Anirban too had hanged himself from the ceiling using his mother’s saree.

“We have found a suicide note beside Asha’s body. The note states that she has committed suicide because of her ailing health and no one is responsible for her death,” said officer-in-charge of Kasba police station Santosh Chakraborty.

Asha, however, had no records of any serious physical ailment.

The preliminary investigation, however, seems to indicate that Anirban was frustrated because he was unable to get a suitable job after completing his MBA from a private business management school. He had started supplying building materials to local promoters for livelihood. Asha, however, was not happy with her son’s profession and Anirban, too, had become pessimistic, as he had been unable to live up to his mother’s expectations. This had resulted in tension within the family. The police suspect the deceased could have entered a suicide pact.

“The family has been living in the Payamanti Housing Complex for the last 15 years. But they had not developed any cordial relationship with the other families living in the complex,” Chakraborty added. The bodies have been sent for postmortem.
