The demand to divide the state into north Tamil Nadu and south Tamil Nadu along river Cauvery, which flows across the state, had been raised by leaders of the All India Moovendar Munnetra Kazhagam founder N Sethuraman and Vanniyar Peravai President A K Natarajan.
Talking to reporters in Chennai on Tuesday, they said the 'North and South Tamil Nadu Movement' would soon organise a consultative meeting in Chenai, in which leaders demanding separate states across the country would participate.
Campaigns would also be launched at grassroots level across the state to mobilise people's support for the bifurcation of Tamil Nadu, Sethuraman said.
He said demands for new states such as Telengana in Andhra Pradesh, Vidharbha in Maharashtra and trifurcation of Uttar Pradesh had gone down well with politicians in the country.
The leaders said the population explosion in Chennai, the state capital, had led to several difficulties like traffic congestion, drinking water shortage, environmental pollution and lack of space to live in the metropolis.
The fruits of globalisation and industrialisation had not been enjoyed by people of other parts of the state as major industries had been set up only in and around Chennai.
In order to ensure uniform distribution of economic growth and power and for effective administration, the state should be bifurcated, they stressed. Sethuraman also demanded the setting up of second state reorganisation committee.

OH GOD, PLEASE SAVE MY TAMILS CHILDREN FROM THIS NONSENSE, AND TEACH THEM, NOT FOLLOW THEIR. FAKE LEADERS WHO WERE ONLY GOOD IN THE FILMS ACTING FAKE AS BRAVE HEROES, AND IN REALITY THEY ARE NOT GOOD AT GOVERNING THE STATE, LOOK AT CONDITION OF TAMILNADU, AND CAPITAL CITY CHENNAI? IT MUST BE THE DIRTIEST IN THE WORLD, PLEASE STOP WORSHIPING THESE EMPTY FAKE LEADERS, THEY HAVE SMALL MIDS AND WANT TO DIVIDE AND RULE YOU MY UNEDUCATED TAMILS CHILDREN
Cool. The Punjabis of North TN are intolerable. Also they are mainly Brahmins. Also most of them do not wear dark glasses, and show me even one person there who has named his son Stalin there and proved that Ram did not exist.
It is nothing but shifting of focus. Incase any body feel that grouth is going on in certain places let demand for decentralisation. Tremandous grouth has taken place around DELHI i.e;NATIONAL TERRITORIAL. Can you demand for second, third, forth.....national capitals. Let fight for decentalisation of Govt. machinary and not creation of more Chief Ministers and their chamchas
It will be a great idea for Karuna and Jaya declare their private lands as separate states-Karuna Nadu and Jaya Nadu.
Two great leaders talk of bifurcation. But where to go to get dark glass worn cheif ministers?.It is a very big problem for tamilians.
Oh God !! another bunch of imbeciles. I plan to launch campaign for a law which approves corporal punishment for extraordingarily idiotic acts, or even proposal of the same.Think it already has a lot of grassroot support
Aha-good idea--people can use identity cards to go other states and it should apply for animals also including rats.Furthermore karunanithy will be very happy to solve his family problems (in alloting each country to each of his son) and for his daughters governor posts are remaining.Rajya sabha mp posts can be given to his illegal daughters.....very good idea.
So madan-how many states needed for karuna to solve his problems?. -reply immeadiately. We are in hurry to bifurcate the state and taking decision tomarrow. All the details are arriving except yours counts.
These two political fools know nothing but talking unwanted topics. Now we think that the present state govt. itself is not needed in this country because of too many politicians, mlas, mps who are all wasting our tax money.Besides this these politicians (mla,mp) are getting pensions. Are they really fit for pensions and salary?.bloody.Wasting our hard work and taxes and doing curruption, murders, kidnapping, all evils. So we don't like to bifurcate the state and moreover to ban all regional parties and movements.
The reported demand for the bifurcation Tamil Nadu has come not a day too soon. In fact the State should be trifurcated to form the equivalent of the ancient Pandya, Chola and Chera countries. Pandya Nadu can have Madurai as capital, Chola Nadu Thanjavur and Chera Nadu Coimbatore. Chennai could become a Union Territory like Chandigarh to avoid claims by the other States. Since the bulk of the ancient Chera country is in Kerala now its new namesake State could comprise districts forming the Kongu Nadu surrounding Coimbatore. Mr Karunanidhi can solve the domestic succession problem by making his sons Azhagiri,Stalin and Muthu as the Chief Ministers of the Pandya, Chola and Chera Nadus, respectively, provided he has the requisite majorities in the State Assemblies.
Even if karuna does not have required majority in assembly, congress, communists will be ready to support his valuable ideas.
In a democracy, it is the people’s right to associate themselves in any form they want and choose the government they want so long as it is not anti-national. People who want a separate state would have to demonstrate that the geographical entity chosen is acceptable to a large majority (perhaps two-thirds to three-quarters) of the constituents and that the unit is politically, economically, linguistically, culturally, and logistically viable. The center should make it possible for a nonviolent and sane discussion of the pros and cons in a civil environment and make a just decision.
If we divide college seats, jobs, parliament and Legislature seats etc on caste basis, why not the Country(land) also ?
This only proves that the politicians are creating more jopb opportunities for themselves. These self centric politicians are better advised to make use of the available resources to prove their worthiness. If unity is strength so is the size. Instead of wasting money and resources on creating more overheads apply your mind and come out with useful solutions. With an empty head and corrupt mind you will ask for these type of nonsence only. By this bifurcation you will create more political fights and hatered between people. We have not yet forgotten the shame of Cauvery between the Karanataka and Tamilnadu. If the same logic is applied over a wider scale why not bifurcate India?
Tamilnadu is not such a big sate to enable bifurcation for better administration. This issue is raised just to attract attention of the media and bifurcating will in no way facilitate the people of tamilnadu. Moreover, comaparing this state to andhra pradeesh and maharashtra is ridiculous.
Tamil Nadu is an excellent state with great culture.Development is a State's responsibility andis a slow and continuous programme.I am sure planning brains of the state and centre would have made some road map.Division of state is noalternative but a retrograde step. Some more politicians will fill their pockets and some more corrupt Govt's babus will develop themselves and their kith and kins.Very impractical suggestion by vested interests.
BETTER THAN THIS.NO STATES ONLY DISTRICTS.PEOPLE FROM DISTRICT SELECT A MAYOR AND ONE REPRESENTIVE TO THE CENTER,TO FORM LOWER HOUSE.CENTRAL GVT: FORMED BY PRESIDENT ELECTED BY ALL INDIANS SEND A JUDGE, A FISCAL AND A POLICE COMISSIONARE.AND THEN SEE INDIA;WELL REPRESENTED,WELL MANAGED,NO STATES POLITICSTHINK ABOUT IT
ALSO DIVIDE MARATHISTAAN INTO 100 STATES. STRAT BY SEPERATING BOMBAY.
I am from Karnataka but I do support Raj Thackrey. Something needs to be done for the exodus from other states to Mumbai. We too have a similar problem in Bangalore where Kannadigas are in a minority. What are their state governments doing?? Please protest against Laloo, Nitish, Mayawati, Mulayam, Rajnath Singh etc and not against Raj.
DEAR BHAIYYA EVEN IF WE ARE DIVIDED IN 100 STATES WHEN IT COMES TO BEATING YOU WE WILL BE ONE ,PLEASE DO NOT WASTE UR TIME THINKING ABOUT MAHARASTRA PLEASE GO AND WASH YOUR COWS
If people of Tamil Nadu cannot kill this idea and stop the criminal politicians responsibile for these crazy ideas now, they will be in the same position to what AP is today. It is highly riduculous that highly-selfish poisonous caste-based politicians seed this kind of venomous seeds and get away. Wake up TN citizens.
I am amazed at the responses of people who are against dividing the nation into even smaller bits. This means that people want unity rather than division .This sentiments can be used to unite the country into one.It has been said that from time immemorial India was never a single country.Soon after British left they handed it over to the hands of Congress which managed to divide .The person was Nehru.Within half a decade we managed to carve out 28 states each having its own language. But can this be utilized to unite the country into one and only for administrative purposes divide them into zones but not as different states?
Cool. The Punjabis of North TN are intolerable. Also they are mainly Brahmins. Also most of them do not wear dark glasses, and show me even one person there who has named his son Stalin there and proved that Ram did not exist.
This agenda is to fill the pockets of yet more self serving hypocrites. They don't have the interests of the masses at heart. If they really want to help, they should look for ways to bring in investments deeper into the rural areas so that everyone can benefit. This immature idea can only push the state backwards, not forwards. Such people should be ignored and their useless plans should be discarded without wasting time. PS. I am a Tamilian from Salem.
I think it makes economic and administrative sense. Also, it might bode well for future of united India. I for one always wondered whether the linguistic division of states was a good idea in first place. Although, it was based on a sound principle, my fear is it might lead to break-up of India. Factors that helps this tendency are English replacing Hindi as common language (no it is not a vote for making Hindi official language), spread of good dose of regional language entertainment (TV/Movies), Art and Literature, growing influence of NRI groups and last but not least the ability of the states to access international funding directly. Dividing big and powerful states based geography could help manage them better. You can say sort of divide and rule. It also makes governing easier. After all with our population density we can afford more states.
The reasons given for dividing states are ridiculous. Only politicians can come up with such stupid ideas, only cast can make people blind enough to take this idea. There are not industry around Chennai because people in Chennai welcome industries, unlike down south where all effort to industrialize has being opposed by local politicians and population alike. Instances of such opposition need not be listed here as many of they happened very recently.A larger state also means larger pool of natural resource which can be shared by a bigger population. And for better administration we should start using other administrative mechanisms already in place, such as Panchayats, Municipality, City Corporations, etc. We do not need more Chief ministers and Ministers.
What a banter!! can they not get their pre-historic brains to think beyond that. Could they not think of IT for Operational efficiency. Or a million other options. What an insult to the intelligence of the voter!!
This is the most ridiculous proposal I have heard. TN already has a fight with Karnataka over Cauvery waters. If this proposal goes through, there will be a 3 way fight between South TN, North TN and Karnataka. Of course, if the boundary between South TN and North TN is the Cauvery river, then who gets Cauvery? This proposal is going to set TN back for centuries, because such disputes are not easily solved - sometimes never solved.
WE HAVE EXCELLENT SYSTEM TO ADMINISTER BIG STATES.PETTY POLITECIANS ARE DEMANDING BIFURCATION TO SWALLOW THE RESOURCES.
Small states means better development as in the case of Uttranchal, and Himachal. Overall development improves with law and order situation, transparence. We should note many states are the bigger then many countries to administer to such a large number of people takes more division and enpowerment at lower levels, which funding seems to never tricle down there.
Where is the need to create additional bureaucracy when the state is doing comparatively well? Small time caste-leaders will keep asking for more power for obvious reasons! According to HRD index TN ranks comparable to Kerala which is 1/3rd it’s size. Even in economics, the state has had above national growth but for the last 3 years. It makes sense only to divide 100M states into smaller ones, for the ones that are functioning well let them be. At best you can think of Chennai (and other metros) as a separate UT, that’s all.
This is a dangerous trend. Vanniyar Peravai and Moovendar Munnetra Kazhagam are caste-based parties wanting bifurcation of Tamil Nadu. Next such parochial parties will ask for separation from India. I hope people of Tamil Nadu give them a fitting reply. I am from Andhra Pradesh but I would like to see a United Tamil Nadu. Linguistic minorities will be severely affected if the linguistic states are divided.
