Movie review: Billu

Font Size

New Delhi Cast: Irrfan Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Lara Dutta, Om Puri, Rajpal Yadav, Asrani

Director: Priyadarshan

Once upon an ancient time, an exemplary friendship illumined our land : the tales of Lord Krishna and his childhood pal Sudama, perhaps apocryphal, perhaps mythical, still continue to regale and delight us.

Monster Malyalam hit 'Katha Parayumpol' becomes 'Billu' on its way to the Hindi heartland via Priyadarshan. In the re-make, Irrfan plays the barber who shared tiffin with superstar Sahir Khan, when they were carefree school-children. Now all grown up, Billu is still dirt poor, living with wife and two kids in a spartan hut, and Sahir is the 'badshah' of Bollywood.

The film, geared towards the climactic point of the two opposite poles meeting, is supposed to thrive on the tensions built by the director, in the lives of Billu and Sahir. But except for a couple of sequences which hit the emotional spot, Priyadarshan's latest is devoid of the essential drama that would have made 'Billu' a memorable film.

Can you put a high-octane performer like SRK and a fabulous actor like Irrfan in one film and draw a near-blank? Priyan has done exactly that by abandoning his usual exuberance, which makes his films such loud, take-you-out-of-yourself experiences. Here he goes uncharacteristically sedate, and keeps everything so toned down that almost nothing lifts off the screen.

Too much time is spent getting Billu and Sahir to meet, and the interim passes slowly. Irrfan is wonderful, but is surrounded by a lot of dead wood : except for Asrani, the rest of the bit parts never go beyond their lines. Or are just plain uninteresting. How many times can you see a mustachioed Om Puri (playing a greedy money-lender) drive up to Billu's little shop in the middle of a village chowk (note to the film-makers : sets will always be sets, and never the real thing: a UP village will never have a round circle dotted with subziwalas, naiees (barbers), and other bric-a-brac, it's always intersecting galis), and yell at him?

And Lara as a village belle may not be as much a stretch as the one she was in 'Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost', but only a tad: her flawlessly cut low-back cholis are a fashion statement you won't find in villages.

SRK, playing a character as close to himself as you wouldn't notice (and you're not supposed to) charges up the scene everytime he comes on, saying something pithy. Which happens too seldom, because he's too busy boosting the film with item numbers with Kareena, Priyanka and Deepika. Happily, he does reserve some lovely lines for himself: "I'm the only movie star who has more men than women around me".

He's saying that apropos of the macho security men who surround him, but ha ha, read between the lines. He also uses the film to launch broadsides at people who say nasty things about the Khans and Bollywood rivalries, and pompous types who do not respect actors : not for nothing is he the smartest of them all.

Watch it for Irrfan who gets every shade in, from self-respect to bafflement to misery, in his portrayal of a poor man who's got too much pride to remember himself to a friend who's gone so far ahead of him in life's sweepstakes. And for SRK playing SRK. Just don't pay too much attention to the film.

Awesome movie. Best work of Priyadarshan after Muskurahat by Mrugesh on 01 Aug 2009

Indian audience is worth a pathetic movie like Ghajini. Which is overdose of South Indian action movies. Indian audience is dumb and doesn't have enough sensitivity to watch a movie like Billu. It is an awesome movie. Very simple and touching. The best work of Priyadarshan after his movie "Muskurahat" (it was again a movie Dum Indian audience didn't understand. Priyadarshan should make more of these movies instead of making Pathetic movies like Garam Masala

Billu by K B IYER on 14 Feb 2009

A Priyadarshan film turned out to be a Irfankhan film. That is bad for a director. Film should have totality and directors stamp. By taking xerox copies of all the available Malayalam film Priyan doesn't acheive anything.Any other director could have treated the subject imaginatevely. He has lifted scene from so many other malayalam films thinking that he is the only Keralite in other part of India.Film is a creative media and needs concentration.Priyan's problem is that he is working on six films at a time, and that affects the quality of the film Billu is not better than his last week release Chal Chala Chal. To come out with another Virasat or Hera Pheri, some writer directer down Kerala should make a hit film, so that he could remake. Remakes are not bad idea, but remaker should contribute of his own also.Billu has failed on this aspect, because it was blindlely xeroxed

Irfan Khan is the KING by Sarkar on 13 Feb 2009

Irfan Khan is the real king. Shahrukh Khan should retire from acting. Irfan Khan has great talents but he should not waste it in such cheap script that can only suit some halka phulka surfacial popular among mass type actor like SRK. Irfan Khan should follow footsteps of actor like Aamir Khan and choose only good movies to act.

SRK GREAT ACHIEVER WITH GREAT ORATORY SKILL by kamal on 14 Feb 2009

Over the years i have been watching we indians try to pull the legs of any one who is trying to climb high whether he is our neighbour or in proffession and even our own relative. Don't make personal remake about any individual appreciate the good work done. i remember when don was released all the print media was hell bent to declare it a flop but we know the truth and rest is history.

Priyadarshan is neither intelligent nor creative. His entire carrear, he took photocopies of Hinbdi films in Malayalam without consent, and now he is taking xerox of all the available Malayalam films in Hindi with or without consent. He got Billu as a package sold by the Malayalam film maker, Priyan thinks he has got monopoly of on all the Malayalam films screened and had lavishly lifted scenes from various films here too, Another director could have done better. Virasat, Hera Pheri, and now Billu all these original Malayalam films are not Priyan's films, but somebodey else, and the credit if any should go to original makers

Most Indian movies are copied from hollywood movies or latin american movies by Suvi Nadakuzhackal on 18 Feb 2009

Most Indian directors copy stories from Hollywodd, African movies, Latin american movies etc. And none of them give credit for the original ones. This is just a proof of lack of creativity among our crew here.

Billu by Felix on 13 Feb 2009

I agree. Priyan is either not talented or is not using his talent to come up with original ideas. I haven't seen Billu, but the malayalam movie was too good.

Great movie by Mrugesh on 13 Feb 2009

Billu by Parameswaran M.K. on 13 Feb 2009

"Kuselan", tamil remake of malayalam hit movie "Katha Parayumpol" was a flop. It is heartening to see that "Billu" is keping the essence of original film and going to be a hit.
