While the alliance might help the SP's attempts to consolidate its hold on the OBC vote bank, it has upset Muslims, who, by and large, have been supporting the party for nearly two decades.
Head of the Sunni Theology Department at AMU Mufti Mohammad Zahid Khan said, "It would have been understandable had Kalyan Singh apologised for his role in Babri Masjid's demolition before Mulayam Singh accepted his friendship." The Mufti is a known supporter of the SP and his discomfort with this newly-formed alliance is quite understandable.
Already, alarm bells are ringing for the Samajwadi Party, as Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati, smelling an opportunity, has started sending feelers to prominent Muslim leaders in the SP.
With the Congress and RJD disapproving of his pact with former UP chief minister Kalyan Singh and Muslims beginning to question the tie-up with the man during whose rule the Babri Masjid was demolished, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Monday did a U-turn, saying “there is no alliance with Kalyan Singh, only friendship” and that seat-sharing talks with the Congress were on and “an alliance will materialise” for the Lok Sabha polls.
Earlier, at a press conference in Lucknow, Mulayam Singh had said: “The Muslims trust me and there is no confusion over Kalyan Singh. The misunderstanding created by statements of certain leaders will soon be cleared. I cannot abuse Kalyan Singh for the demolition of the Babri Masjid but I never gave him a clean chit in the demolition case. As the BJP chief minister of UP on December 6, 1992, he was morally responsible for the demolition of the mosque.”
“Kalyan Singh should have taken steps to prevent the demolition of the mosque but that did not mean he was totally responsible for the demolition. The mosque was demolished by the RSS and Shiv Sena,” he said.
With the SP-Congress seat-sharing talks in limbo, Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh on Monday sought to revive his friendship with the Left parties by meeting CPI general secretary A B Bardhan. He is also planning to meet the CPI(M)’s Prakash Karat on Wednesday.
Singh’s surprise visit to Ajoy Bhawan, his first after the falling out with the Left in the run up to the July 22 trust vote, is seen as an attempt to frustrate the Congress which is dilly-dallying on the seat-sharing talks and to reopen a channel of communication with the comrades with the post-poll scenario in mind.

I like these secular moves of mulayam.
If people of UP still dont learn and continue to vote for this anti hindu right wing Islamic party called samajwadi party which feilds only crimanals.....then we cant blame mulayam or the muslims ...in that case the hindus deserve te treatment they get.
History repeats itself unless we learn and act.Muslim Jehadis will keep on coming and attacking Hindus but we hindus will never unite....We deserve this as it is happening openely. Muslim unity is secular and hindu unity is communal. Waah Media!!
The so-called seat-sharng discussions between different poltical parties are nothing but prepoll agreements for :Loot-sharing " after the elections.
A section of the article says passage of 16 years, few have forgotten Kalyan Singh's role in Babri Masjid's demolition.I regret to say that few Hindus have forgotten the atrocities of Muslims who invaded our country trying to destroy Hindu culture.
